This book celebrates Laguna Beach and its greenbelt, which have been designated a historic American landscape by the National Park Service, Department of Interior, and presents the nomination documentation that is housed in the Library of Congress. It is dedicated to the generations of devoted people responsible for shaping the citys character and traditions. Lagunas mountains and dramatic canyons, coastal cliffs, and ever-changing ocean views attracted plein air artists and others beginning early in the last century, and from the beginning, its residents were dedicated to protecting and embellishing it. The fortunate confluence of geography, history, and community resolve has resulted in the preservation, in the face of the surrounding suburban sprawl, of an authentic small town and a vast area of protected open space that provides breathing room for all of us.
The revised companion book to the Laguna-Art-Museum exhibit of the same name takes a look at Birk's ambitious series, which needs to be seen in its entirety to be fully understood. By documenting this 'Great War' - Birk's drawings and paintings parody the styles of early artists-explorers - his works offer social criticism on the general state of things in California. It includes a 20-track CD, which corresponds to various works in the series and it also comprises 16 new pages of propaganda posters.

This well written, fully researched, and handsomely illustrated volume gives potent new life to artists and ideas nearly lost to American art history. Susan Landauer's enlightening book will play an important role in redefining the post-World War II avant-garde as a national rather than an East Coast phenomenon."--Henry T. Hopkins, University of California, Los Angeles "This book ranks as one of the more important recent contributions to the history of postwar American art."--Caroline Jones, Boston University
Since 1994, Juxtapoz magazine, published in San Francisco, has provided a forum for so called Lo-Brow art-work inspired by Comics, hot rods, and popular culture --and has become, in the years since, the most widely read art magazine in the United States. Juxtapoz provides a voice and validation for a brand of artist, like founder Robert Williams, Mark Ryden, Coop, Camille Rose Garcia, Glen Barr, the Clayton Brothers, Isabel Samaras, Joe Coleman, and many, many others, who have not historically been accepted by the typical art-world infrastructure of collector, curator, and critic. However, since its founding, it has become the leverage point for the creation of its own infrastructure that supports Juxtapozian art with galleries around the world, collectors, increasing critical attention, and museum exhibitions at adventurous institutions. This exciting and provocative collection presents a group of artists who rejected traditional rules of the art establishment and created their own canon, known as the Juxtapoz School. Published in conjunction with the Laguna Art Museum for the 2008 exhibition In the Land of Retinal Delights.
