After that, a more sophisticated model of the machine that considers grid disturbances, such as voltage dips and unbalances will be also studied. The second part of the book surveys the most relevant control strategies used for the DFIM when it operates at the wind energy generation application. The control techniques studied, range from standard solutions used by wind turbine manufacturers, to the last developments oriented to improve the behavior of high power wind turbines, as well as control and hardware based solutions to address different faulty scenarios of the grid. In addition, the standalone DFIM generation system will be also analyzed.

Radical Left Voters in Western Europe explores who votes for Radical Left Parties in contemporary Western Europe, and why. Once considered a relic of the past which was doomed to disappear in affluent societies, Radical Left Parties were able to survive unprecedented electoral crises in the 1980s and 1990s to become a stable and significant feature of contemporary West European politics. Despite this, our knowledge of the electorate of contemporary Radical Left parties is extremely limited. To fill this gap, this book analyzes the radical left electorate in 17 West European countries (Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland) for a period of 18 years (2000–18). The research combines data from multiple sources (surveys, country-level data, and party-level data) to show how, amidst social and political change, Radical Left Parties have been able to maintain a relatively sizeable and clearly identifiable electorate with fairly similar socio-demographic and attitudinal features. Moreover, the book argues that in order to explain electoral support for Radical Left Parties it is important to consider not only voter characteristics but also the characteristics of the parties themselves and of the political and economic context in which they compete for votes. This book will be of interest to scholars of comparative politics, political sociology, electoral behaviour, and political parties.

A partir de cette petite histoire très émouvante, et en m'appuyant sur des éléments historiques et autobiographiques, j'ai voulu écrire notre épopée familiale, décrire la vie à Freixo de Numão, un petit village du nord du Portugal, dans les années 60 avant que mon père ne parte "a salto", son arrivée dans l'un des plus grands bidonvilles portugais de France, celui du Franc-Moisin à Saint-Denis, l'émigration clandestine de sa femme et de ses enfants, et les trois années pendant lesquelles nous avons habité ces baraques d'infortune. A travers ce récit, j'ai voulu refaire une nouvelle fois cette traversée clandestine des deux frontières qui a bouleversé le destin de centaines de milliers de personnes, ce voyage sans fin qui m'obsède depuis l'enfance, entre le rêve et la réalité, entre le Portugal et la France.

This monograph presents a comprehensive and rigorous new framework for the theoretical description and modelling of enriched continua. In other words, continua that exhibit more complex behaviour than their conventional counterparts and, in particular, multicomponent systems. It employs gradient theories, exhibiting multiple transition layers described by phase fields. As a point of departure, we account for multiple continuum kinematic processes, including motion and various phase fields. These gradient theories arise by considering various kinematic processes which are tightly linked to the level of the arbitrariness of the Euler–Cauchy cuts. The surface defining the Euler–Cauchy cut may lose its smoothness along a curve, and the curve may also lose its smoothness at a point. Additionally, we postulate the principle of virtual power on surfaces. Then, the first and second laws of thermodynamics with the power balance provide suitable and consistent choices for the constitutive equations. Finally, the complementary balances, namely the balances on surfaces, are tailored to coincide with different parts of the boundaries of the body. These surface balances are then called environmental surface balances and aid in determining suitable and consistent boundary conditions. Ultimately, the environmental surface power balance is relaxed to yield an environmental surface imbalance of powers, rendering a more general type of boundary condition. A detailed introduction sets the scene for the mathematical chapters that follow, ensuring that graduate students and newcomers can profit from the material presented.

This book is devoted to the frequency domain approach, for both regular and degenerate Hopf bifurcation analyses. Besides showing that the time and frequency domain approaches are in fact equivalent, the fact that many significant results and computational formulas obtained in the studies of regular and degenerate Hopf bifurcations from the time domain approach can be translated and reformulated into the corresponding frequency domain setting, and be reconfirmed and rediscovered by using the frequency domain methods, is also explained. The description of how the frequency domain approach can be used to obtain several types of standard bifurcation conditions for general nonlinear dynamical systems is given as well as is demonstrated a very rich pictorial gallery of local bifurcation diagrams for nonlinear systems under simultaneous variations of several system parameters. In conjunction with this graphical analysis of local bifurcation diagrams, the defining and nondegeneracy conditions for several degenerate Hopf bifurcations is presented. With a great deal of algebraic computation, some higher-order harmonic balance approximation formulas are derived, for analyzing the dynamical behavior in small neighborhoods of certain types of degenerate Hopf bifurcations that involve multiple limit cycles and multiple limit points of periodic solutions. In addition, applications in chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering as well as in biology are discussed. This book is designed and written in a style of research monographs rather than classroom textbooks, so that the most recent contributions to the field can be included with references.
