Die grundlegenden Beitrage Beiträge dieses Bandes spiegelten den Wissensstand am Beginn des 6. Jahrzehnts wider. Sie waren wahrscheinlich zugleich die letzten echten Handbuchbeitrage Handbuchbeiträge zu diesem Thema: umfassend und enzyklopadisch enzyklopädisch vollständig vollstandig und trotzdem als Ganzes lesbar, verfaßt verfaBt von den damals besten Sachkennern in Deutschland. Inzwischen hat sich das Handbuch der Allgemeinen Pathologie gewandelt. Entsprechend der Weitung des Faches vergrößerten vergroBerten sich die Themen. Neben den Bänden Banden tiber über die die Organe Organe zum zum Hilfsmechanismus Hilfsmechanismus des des Stoffwechsels, Stoffwechsels, tiber über die die Zelle, Zelle, das das Altern Altern usw. usw. nahm sich der Geschwulstband vergleichsweise bescheiden aus. Although Suez wholly undermined British prestige, and revealed severe shortcomings in its military capabilities, this work states that these losses were considerably offset by the increasing ability of British policymakers to influence the United States--a country with an emerging presence in the region. In the Name of Oil documents the frequent bureaucratic infighting between the administration, state department, and CIA on the American side, as well as the way in which the British took advantage of the blurred line between communism and Arab nationalism in the Middle East to mislead the U.S. into pursuing policies that would protect the cheap oil supplied by British-owned oil giants such as the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and the Iraq Petroleum Company.

The study of the biological effects of foreign chemicals (whether therapeutic drugs or chemicals present at work or in the environment) interests the biologist from a number of different and complementary viewpoints. Apart from the more obvious pharmacological and toxicological interest, the experimentalist often uses foreign chemicals to produce in experimental animals disease states similar to naturally occurring diseases, so that their pathogenetic mechanisms and therapy can be studied under controlled conditions. In addition - as Claude Bernard pointed out over a century ago - foreign chemicals can be employed as instruments to analyze the most delicate vital processes; much can be learned about the physiological processes themselves by a careful study of the mechanisms by which these are altered by chemicals. The field of heme and hemoproteins offers an example of the interplay of these different approaches. Their metabolism can be altered by therapeutic drugs and other foreign chemicals and this results in a variety of biological responses that transcend the boundaries of pharmacology into the confines of clinical medi cine, genetics, toxicology, biochemistry and physiology. In this book a multidisciplinary approach to the study of heme metabolism is presented including the effect of chemicals on heme metabolism in patients, the results of experimental work in the whole animal, as well as in vitro studies.

Much is known about the grammar of the modistae and about its eclipse; this book sets out to trace its rise. In the late eleventh century grammar became an analytical rather than an exegetical discipline under the impetus of the new theology. Under the impetus of Arab learning the ancient sciences were reshaped according to the norms of Aristotle’s Analytics, and developed within a structure of speculative sciences beginning with grammar and culminating in theology. Though the modistae acknowledge Aristotle, Donatus, Priscian and the Arab commentators, their roots also lie in Augustine and Boethius, and they took as much from their scholastic contemporaries as they gave them. This book traces the genesis of a grammar which communicated freely with other speculative sciences, shared their structures and methods, and affirmed its own individuality by defining its object as the causes of language.
