From the time of Pythagoras, we have been tempted to treat numbers as the ultimate or only truth. This book tells the history of that habit of thought. But more, it argues that the logic of counting sacrifices much of what makes us human, and that we have a responsibility to match the objects of our attention to the forms of knowledge that do them justice. Humans have extended the insights and methods of number and mathematics to more and more aspects of the world, even to their gods and their religions.Today those powers are greater than ever, as computation is applied to virtually every aspect of human activity. But the rules of mathematics do not strictly apply to many things-from elementary particles to people-in the world.By subjecting such things to the laws of logic and mathematics, we gain some kinds of knowledge, but we also lose others. How do our choices about what parts of the world to subject to the logics of mathematics affect how we live and how we die? This question is rarely asked, but it is urgent, because the sciences built upon those laws now govern so much of our knowledge, from physics to psychology.Number and Knowledge sets out to ask it. In chapters proceeding chronologically from Ancient Greek philosophy and the rise of monotheistic religions to the emergence of modern physics and economics, the book traces how ideals, practices, and habits of thought formed over millennia have turned number into the foundation-stone of human claims to knowledge and certainty. But the book is also a philosophical and poetic exhortation to take responsibility for that history, for the knowledge it has produced, and for the many aspects of the world and of humanity that it ignores or endangers. To understand what can be counted and what can't is to embrace the ethics of purposeful knowing"--

The 11 papers discuss analysis, partial differential equations, applied mathematics, and scientific computing, focusing on the work of Peter Lax and Louis Nirenberg, whose 70th birthdays occasioned the conference. Specific topics include viscosity solutions for the porous medium equation, holomorphic curves in contact dynamics, and minimizing volume among Lagrangian submanifolds. No index. Member prices are $31 for institutions and $23 or individuals. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

The articles of this book are written by leading experts in partial differential equations and their applications, who present overviews here of recent advances in this broad area of mathematics. The formation of shocks in fluids, modern numerical computation of turbulence, the breaking of the Einstein equations in a vacuum, the dynamics of defects in crystals, effects due to entropy in hyperbolic conservation laws, the Navier-Stokes and other limits of the Boltzmann equation, occupancy times for Brownian motion in a two dimensional wedge, and new methods of analyzing and solving integrable systems are some of this volume's subjects. The reader will find an exposition of important advances without a lot of technicalities and with an emphasis on the basic ideas of this field.
Lax and Nirenberg are two of the most distinguished mathematicians of our times. Their work on partial differential equations (PDEs) over the last half-century has dramatically advanced the subject and has profoundly influenced the course of mathematics. A huge part of the development in PDEs during this period has either been through their work, motivated by it or achieved by their postdocs and students. A large number of mathematicians honored these two exceptional scientists in a week-long conference in Venice (June 1996) on the occasion of their 70th birthdays. This volume contains the proceedings of the conference, which focused on the modern theory of nonlinear PDEs and their applications. Among the topics treated are turbulence, kinetic models of a rarefied gas, vortex filaments, dispersive waves, singular limits and blow-up solutions, conservation laws, Hamiltonian systems and others. The conference served as a forum for the dissemination of new scientific ideas and discoveries and enhanced scientific communication by bringing together such a large number of scientists working in related fields. THe event allowed the international mathematics community to honor two of its outstanding members.
Since its first appearance as a set of lecture notes published by the Courant Institute in 1974, this book served as an introduction to various subjects in nonlinear functional analysis. The current edition is a reprint of these notes, with added bibliographic references. Topological and analytic methods are developed for treating nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations. The first two chapters of the book introduce the notion of topological degree and develop its basic properties. These properties are used in later chapters in the discussion of bifurcation theory (the possible branching of solutions as parameters vary), including the proof of Rabinowitz global bifurcation theorem. Stability of the branches is also studied. The book concludes with a presentation of some generalized implicit function theorems of Nash-Moser type with applications to Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theory and to conjugacy problems. For more than 20 years, this book continues to be an excellent graduate level textbook and a useful supplementary course text. Titles in this series are copublished with the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.
This volume is the outgrowth of a series of lectures presented at a CBMS Regional Conference held at Texas Tech University in May 1972. In these lectures the author takes up several topics in the theory of linear partial differential equations, beginning with rather elementary, expository material, and going on to some of the current developments and techniques. The lectures are meant for the nonexpert, as an introduction to some of the current questions and ideas. Since the author wished to include some deep results, he has been technical on some occasions, but he has endeavored to describe the necessary background.

Based on lectures held in honour of Louis Nirenberg's 75th birthday, this volume contains both research papers dealing with various problems in partial differential equations such as wave maps, the Navier-Stokes equations and Lagrangian submanifolds.
