In the sound of the 1960s and 1970s, nothing symbolized the rift between black and white America better than the seemingly divided genres of country and soul. Yet the music emerged from the same songwriters, musicians, and producers in the recording studios of Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee, and Muscle Shoals, Alabama--what Charles L. Hughes calls the "country-soul triangle." In legendary studios like Stax and FAME, integrated groups of musicians like Booker T. and the MGs and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section produced music that both challenged and reconfirmed racial divisions in the United States. Working with artists from Aretha Franklin to Willie Nelson, these musicians became crucial contributors to the era's popular music and internationally recognized symbols of American racial politics in the turbulent years of civil rights protests, Black Power, and white backlash. Hughes offers a provocative reinterpretation of this key moment in American popular music and challenges the conventional wisdom about the racial politics of southern studios and the music that emerged from them. Drawing on interviews and rarely used archives, Hughes brings to life the daily world of session musicians, producers, and songwriters at the heart of the country and soul scenes. In doing so, he shows how the country-soul triangle gave birth to new ways of thinking about music, race, labor, and the South in this pivotal period.

2014 will be the 50th anniversary of the landslide victory of Lyndon Johnson and Hubert Humphrey in the 1964 election. This collection of speeches by my husband, Thomas L. Hughes, displays one privileged insiders unusual role during LBJs five years in office. The political courage and literary merit of these speeches were highly praised the time. Their targeted distribution usually carried a not for publication restriction. Together they cover a variety of significant foreign policy topics from the 1964-69 years.After graduating from Carleton College, Oxford University, and Yale Law School, Tom served as Senator Humphreys Legislative Counsel in the Senate from 1955-59, when Johnson was Majority Leader. President Kennedy appointed him Director of Intelligence and Research in the State Department, and he remained in that position until the summer of 1969. In fact Dean Rusk and Tom were the only presidential appointees to serve at State from the first day of Kennedys administration to the last day of Johnsons. Because of his long Humphrey association, Tom was also regarded by many as the Vice Presidents man in the State Department. Thus some of these speech themes were inevitably perceived, rightly or wrongly, as examples of what the Vice President himself might be thinking, if he were not obliged to toe the official line on controversial issues like Vietnam, China, and Latin America. What is unique about the speeches is that their various themes were topics deliberately chosen to influence policymakers inside the government, as well as observers outside (hence Speaking Up and Speaking Out.)

World War II and its aftermath brought devastating material losses to millions of West Germans. Military action destroyed homes, businesses, and personal possessions; East European governments expelled 15 million ethnic Germans from their ancestral homes; and currency reform virtually wiped out many Germans' hard-earned savings. These "war damaged" individuals, well over one-third of the West German population, vehemently demanded compensation at the expense of those who had not suffered losses, to be financed through capital levies on surviving private property. Michael Hughes offers the first comprehensive study of West Germany's efforts to redistribute the costs of war and defeat among its citizenry. The debate over a Lastenausgleich (a balancing out of burdens) generated thousands of documents in which West Germans articulated deeply held beliefs about social justice, economic rationality, and political legitimacy. Hughes uses these sources to trace important changes in German society since 1918, illuminating the process by which West Germans, who had rejected liberal democracy in favor of Nazi dictatorship in the 1930s, came to accept the social-market economy and parliamentary democracy of the 1950s.

Once, early in the Kennedy Administration, Secretary of State Dean Rusk complained that Harvard gets all the credit, but Oxford does all the work. He was referring to the two dozen or more former Rhodes Scholars who, like himself, were then serving the new government in Washington. Among them, at the Assistant Secretary level, was Thomas L. Hughes whom President Kennedy appointed Director of Intelligence and Research in the State Department in April, 1963. An accomplished public speaker, Hughes soon found that his duties included speeches on a variety of serious subjects to a variety of audiences inside and outside the government. Also included were light-hearted appearances before Anglo-American audiences in after-dinner formats. They recurred at regular intervals over subsequent decades whether Hughes was serving at State, as Minister in the US Embassy in London or at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Seven of them are republished here for the possible entertainment of a new generation.
