This book presents a state-of-the-art debate about the origins of Athenian democracy by five eminent scholars. The result is a stimulating, critical exploration and interpretation of the extant evidence on this intriguing and important topic. The authors address such questions as: Why was democracy first realized in ancient Greece? Was democracy “invented” or did it evolve over a long period of time? What were the conditions for democracy, the social and political foundations that made this development possible? And what factors turned the possibility of democracy into necessity and reality? Some changes are more recent & of international origin, such as the European Community Rome Convention (1980) on the law applicable to contractual obligations or the Hague Conventions on Child Abduction (1980), on Marriage (1978) & on Succession (1988), & consideration is given to their impact on common law jurisdictions. Communication in the Middle Ages was better developed than often assumed and institutions, ideas, and military technology was exchanged rapidly, meaning it was possible to coordinate great military expeditions across the geographical periphery of Western Europe. Both Denmark and Portugal were closely connected to the sea and developed strong fleets, at the entrance to the Baltic and in the Mediterranean Seas respectively. They also both had religious borders, to the pagan Wends and to the Muslims, that were pushed forward in almost continuous crusades throughout the centuries. Crusading at the Edges of Europe follows the major campaigns of the kings and crusaders in Denmark and Portugal and compares war-technology and crusading ideology, highlighting how the countries learned from each other and became organised for war.
This book examines the Danish Empire, which for over four hundred years stretched from Northern Norway to Hamburg and was feared by small German principalities to the South. Evolving over time, it has included most of Scandinavia and the North Atlantic, has shifted from a Western orientation under the Vikings to an Eastern one in the Middle Ages, and from a North Sea Empire to a Baltic Empire. From the seventeenth to the early twentieth century, it comprised small overseas colonies in India, Africa and the Caribbean. This book is based on extensive field research conducted by the investigators of Social Research Inc., interpreting the result of over 13,000 individuals. Members of TV audiences were studied to analyze their reactions to what TV offered them, in relation to their age, sex, social class, and personal characteristics. This information is here applied to understanding what television programs, performers, and commercials--by general type and also with illustrative case histories--are being watched. This book on first publication in 1962 provided the first clear image of the people in front of their TV sets, who they were, how they differed from each other, their views on sex and violence, boredom and enlightenment, taste and judgment. It tells us about the audiences and our stereotypes and their response to the new medium they could both see and hear. It destroys the myth of the "mass audience" and replaces it with a scientifically derived description of the many audiences for television, including its protesters, its embracers, and its accommodators. The use of natural catalysts -enzymes -for the transformation of non-natural man-made organic compounds is not at all new: they have been used for more than one hundred years, employed either as whole cells, cell organelles or isolated enzymes [1, 2]. Certainly, the object of most of the early research was totally different from that of the present day. Thus the elucidation of biochemical pathways and enzyme mechanisms was the main reason for research some decades ago. It was mainly during the 1980s that the enormous potential of applying natural catalysts to transform non-natural organic compounds was recognized. What started as a trend in the late 1970s could almost be called a fashion in synthetic organic chemistry in the 1990s. Although the early euphoria during the 'gold rush' in this field seems to have eased somewhat, there is still no limit to be seen for the future development of such methods. As a result of this extensive, recent research, there have been an estimated 12000 papers published on the subject. To collate these data as a kind of 'super-review' would clearly be an impossible task and, furthermore, such a hypothetical book would be unpalatable for the non-expert [3-6].

Pete Anderson, the only Canadian officer to escape from a World War I POW camp and other adventures in the Russian revolution Pete Anderson was a genuine Canadian hero. Canadians generally agree that heroes are celebrated less in their culture than in some others. This treatment of heroes does little to recognize and value the many ordinary men and women who went before to attain extraordinary achievements. Pete Anderson, whom this book is about, was such a person. He didn’t change the world. But he did make a significant difference. In typical Canadian fashion, he didn’t view himself as a hero. Before going to war in 1914, Anderson had been an early pioneer in Edmonton, Alberta, where he had been a successful, rich, and respected businessman. He was a middle-aged man when he fought in the First World War. Shortly after arriving in France, he was captured by the enemy, on his birthday. In a daring escape, he was able to breach the defences of the prisoner of war camp in which he was held and to return to Britain, after an eventful transit through much of Germany. He, and others, thought that he might have been the first Canadian to have escaped from the Germans. He was not. A fellow Albertan, Cpl. Ernest Atherton of the 10th Battalion, probably escaped slightly earlier. However, Anderson was not only the first Canadian officer to successfully escape, he was also the only Canadian officer to escape during the First World War (many others made the attempt but were recaptured). Towards the end of the war, Anderson volunteered to fight in northern Russia, first against the Germans and then as part of an Allied attempt to overthrow the Bolshevik revolution of 1917. When he returned from his wars, he had earned two Distinguished Service Orders (DSO Bar), a senior honour awarded for exemplary service under enemy fire.

As the First World War drew to a close in late 1918, the Mid-European Union was created to fill the vacuum in Central and Eastern Europe as the old Danube Monarchy of Austria-Hungary was falling apart. One year before, in December 1917, the United States had declared war on Austria-Hungary and, overnight, huge masses of immigrants from the Habsburg Empire became enemy aliens in the US. Offering a major deviation from traditional historiography, this book explains how the countdown of mostly diplomatic events in that fatal year 1918 could have taken an alternative course. In addition to providing a narrative account of Austrian-Hungarian relations with the US in the years leading up to the First World War, the author also demonstrates how an almost total ignorance of the affairs of the Dual Monarchy was to be found in the US and vice versa. Following the monographs by STRAUB (1924) and LENDLE (1935), this is the third contribution to the "Pharmacology of Cardiac Glycosides" within the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology, which was founded by ARTHUR HEFFTER and con tinued by WOLFGANG HEUBNER. Because of the need created by the length of time that had elapsed since LENDLE'S work, the editorial board requested the rapid ap pearance of this 56th volume, which represents current knowledge of the pharma cology and clinical pharmacology of cardiac glycosides. In order to avoid any delay, numerous authors were invited to contribute because shorter contributions take less time to prepare and are consequently more up-to-date. The disadvantage is that some overlap between certain chapters could not be avoided, despite the editor's efforts. Overlapping can, however, actually be useful, in that differing opinions may be provided and topical issues discussed from varying viewpoints. Due to the fact that the significance 23 of thorium as a breeder fuel ( 2"fh to be converted to fissile 233U after thermal neutron capture) has decreased within the last decade, the behavior of thorium is not as yet so thoroughly investigated as the heavier radioactive element uranium. Many of these data, however, are not only of academic interest, e.g., the knowledge of atomic spectra is needed for some analytical methods, especially in the trace concentration region. Due to the noble gaS-like electronic configuration of the tetravalent ion, there are no absorption bands in the visible region so that in general spectra and data are very scarce. Agile is broken. Most Agile transformations struggle. According to an Allied Market Research study, "63% of respondents stated the failure of agile implementation in their organizations." The problems with Agile start at the top of most organizations with executive leadership not getting what agile is or even knowing the difference between success and failure in agile. Agile transformation is a journey, and most of that journey consists of people learning and trying new approaches in their own work. An agile organization can make use of coaches and training to improve their chances of success. But even then, failure remains because many Agile ideas are oversimplifications or interpreted in an extreme way, and many elements essential for success are missing. My recently completed novel entitled Laowai for Sale was written in the genre of realistic fiction, first-person omniscient. The plot of the story is the moral, financial, and spiritual bankruptcy of the American people as represented by the storys four main characters in China and the president of the United States in America. While the four main characters in China represent the hope that America can prevail against adversity and reclaim its legacy as the greatest nation on earth, the character of the president represents an America that is willing to mortgage its soul for sensual satisfaction with the risk of losing its identity and position on the world stage. These ideas are conveyed through satire and comedy in the character dialogue. The storys protagonist, John Winston, is an Aspergers syndrome savant with a photographic memory who attained material success through his musical ability and encyclopedic capacity for knowledge on all things regarding American pop music. Unfortunately, he lost everything, as did many others in the economic times that are characteristic of todays US economy. Because of the limited social skills associated with his disability, Winston descends into a downward spiral that resulted in his isolation and drinking. Then he is whisked away to China with three other main characters in a government program to stem the mounting crisis of an unemployment rate that has exceeded 50 percent. This crisis seriously threatens the US presidents chances for a second term in office, so his chief of staff devises a plan, using the CIA, to initiate a massive, wholesale exportation of Americas unemployed labor force to China as English teachers in order to rapidly change the unemployment statistics.

Based on the probability distribution of the random data and using decision theoretical concepts, optimization problems under stochastic uncertainty are converted into appropriate deterministic substitute problems. Due to the probabilities and expectations involved, the book also shows how to apply approximative solution techniques. Several deterministic and stochastic approximation methods are provided: Taylor expansion methods, regression and response surface methods (RSM), probability inequalities, multiple linearization of survival/failure domains, discretization methods, convex approximation/deterministic descent directions/efficient points, stochastic approximation and gradient procedures and differentiation formulas for probabilities and expectations. In the third edition, this book further develops stochastic optimization methods.
