The character is akin to real-life human with his/her distinguishing characteristics such as history, morality, beliefs, abilities, looks, and sociocultural embeddings. It also contains stable personality characteristics; fluctuating emotional, cognitive, SOAR technology, and motivational states. Digital Personality focuses on the creation of systems and interfaces that can observe, sense, predict, adapt to, affect, comprehend, or simulate the following: character based on behavior and situation, behavior based on character and situation, or situation based on character and behavior. Character sensing and profiling, character-aware adaptive systems, and artificial characters are the three primary subfields in digital personality. Digital Personality has attracted the interest of academics from a wide range of disciplines, including psychology, human-computer interaction, and character modeling. It is expected to expand quickly as technology and computer systems become more and more intertwined into our daily lives. Digital Personality is expected to draw at least as much attention as Affective Computing. The goal of affective computing is to enable computers to comprehend both spoken and nonverbal messages from people, use implicit body language, gaze, speech tones, and facial expressions, etc. to infer the emotional state and then reply appropriately or even show affect through interaction modalities. More natural and seamless human-computer connection would be the larger objective. Users will benefit from a more individualized experience as a result. Additionally, this will affect how well the user performs since they will have the assistance of the robots to do their jobs quickly and effectively. This book provides an overview of the character dimensions and how technology is aiding this area of study. It offers a fresh portrayal of character from several angles. It also discusses the applications of this new field of study.

Seva Foundation, a global non-profit eye care organization, established the Global Sight Initiative (GSI) to help end avoidable blindness. GSI, composed of more than 100 hospitals across 20 countries, promotes universal access to culturally appropriate, affordable, and high-quality eye care services. The purpose is to create self-sustaining, comprehensive eye care systems serving marginalized communities throughout the developing world. In January 2016, Seva partnered with Seeing Is Believing (SiB) to support the Global Sight Initiative (GSI) intervention in India through the “SCALE: Strengthening Capacity and Learning to Effectively Deliver Quality Eye Care” (SCALE) project started in mid-2016. The project’s goal was to scale up comprehensive quality eye care services through capacity building, resulting in a direct increase in the restored sight of people. The SCALE project was completed in December 2019. The purpose of this endline impact evaluation study was to review the performance of the SCALE program vis-à-vis its objectives by analyzing the program data as reported by hospitals and presenting the perceived impact and feedback from the data collected through structured questionnaires and consultations with the mentee and mentor hospitals, as well as highlighting the suggested improvements. Analysis of the quantitative program data showed a remarkable performance for all objectives of the program, with inevitable scope for improvement. Feedback from hospital partners was promising, with all noting an inclination to recommend the SCALE program to other hospitals in need of support. Based upon the overall understanding and assessment of the SCALE program, some crucial suggestions and recommendations emerged for future action in the areas of data collection and reporting, capacity building, gender inclusion, mentoring and support, cross-learning, monitoring and evaluation, and research and development, among others.

Dental caries is a multi factorial, bacterial, chronic infection that affects millions of people in the world and has become a public health problem. Also referred to as tooth decay, this disease is one of the most common disorders throughout the world, second only to the common cold. Dental caries is the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States and is 5 to 7 times more common than asthma. According to the World Oral Health Report in 2003, dental caries affect 60-80% of school children and a vast majority of adults. Dental caries is a chronic bacterial infection of the hard tissue of the tooth that is characterized by alternating phases of demineralization and remineralization. Dental decay can lead to significant pain and dysfunction that can interfere with basic functions such as eating, sleeping, and speaking. If left untreated, dental caries can result in cavities forming and, eventually, tooth loss. Although the prevalence and severity of dental caries has decreased over the years, this disease can be controlled better with proper fluoride exposure. Fluoride dentifrices have been shown in numerous clinical trials to be effective anticaries agents and have been recognized as a major cause of the remarkable decline in caries prevalence in many developed countries. Dentifrices have been widely adopted around the world as the principle means of delivering topical fluoride and obtaining caries preventive benefits. Although there is documented literature on the use of topical fluorides, the issue needs to be further researched based on the recent documented literature and guidelines regarding use of topical fluorides. Hence, the present review was conducted with the aim to review the available literature on the use and effectiveness of different topical fluorides used in dentistry.

In this book, the author tries to bring some clarity and much needed top-level understanding of Big Data — what it is, what makes it big, why is it important, and how do we all benefit from it. In the beginning chapters, the book covers the so-called ‘v’s of Big Data — volume, variety, velocity and veracity, as well as a few “minor” ‘v’s. It’s the size of these ‘v’s that gives Big Data its name. Historically, some of the technically most difficult issues with Big Data had to do with its storage and retrieval. Many of the best-known tech companies became the household names thanks to the expertise they developed for dealing with data at scale. In process they developed several advanced technologies and frameworks, many of which became open-sourced (such as Hadoop and Spark), and are now accessible to anyone. The issues and challenges of analyzing data at a large scale are indeed very difficult and need a very strong mathematics skill. I know that very well from firsthand experience many of my favorite techniques and methods that work very well with datasets that can fit in Memory are oftentimes virtually impossible to effectively implement with terabyte-sized data. In the last, the book covers the application of Big data in medicine and business. Untapped potential to use Big data, analytics, and machine learning in these fields. Big data relies on its effectiveness on the full digital transformation of organizations and processes, and, again speaking from experience, medicine and business have still a long way to go in this regard. Big data technologies will continue to have an outsized impact on our lives, and their influence is only going to grow. Anyone who would be interested in learning more about what Big data is all about would be well advised to read this book. It is informative, very well written, and relatively short and highly recommended.
