The Bhagavad Gita is a spiritual handbook that can be of great assistance to all seekers of the truth. Proper practice of the methods mentioned therein can help one, in this very life to attain that which is known as Samadhi, Nirvana, Enlightenment or Liberation. There is no pre-requisite to either join or leave any particular religious denomination to practice these methods, as the Gita teaches spirituality rather than religiosity. Accommodating all types of persons, the various paths shown in the Bhagavad-Gita culminate in the unity underlying all existence. By any of these paths, all will surely attain God as they understand Him. The central theme of the Bhagavad-Gita is the unity, interdependence and subjectiveness of the cosmic manifestation. Such a concept is also now accepted in the field of quantum physics, which, from one perspective, may be perceived as a convergence of science and spirituality.

Is The Marriage of Figaro just about Figaro? Is Don Giovanni’s story the only one—or even the most interesting one—in the opera that bears his name? For generations of critics, historians, and directors, it’s Mozart’s men who have mattered most. Too often, the female characters have been understood from the male protagonist’s point of view or simply reduced on stage (and in print) to paper cutouts from the age of the powdered wig and the tightly cinched corset. It’s time to give Mozart’s women—and Mozart’s multi-dimensional portrayals of feminine character—their due. In this lively book, Kristi Brown-Montesano offers a detailed exploration of the female roles in Mozart’s four most frequently performed operas, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, and Die Zauberflöte. Each chapter takes a close look at the music, libretto text, literary sources, and historical factors that give shape to a character, re-evaluating common assumptions and proposing fresh interpretations. Brown-Montesano views each character as the subject of a story, not merely the object of a hero’s narrative or the stock figure of convention. From amiable Zerlina, to the awesome Queen of the Night, to calculating Despina, all of Mozart’s women have something unique to say. These readings also tackle provocative social, political, and cultural issues, which are used in the operas to define positive and negative images of femininity: revenge, power, seduction, resistance, autonomy, sacrifice, faithfulness, class, maternity, and sisterhood. Keenly aware of the historical gap between the origins of these works and contemporary culture, Brown-Montesano discusses how attitudes about such concepts—past and current—influence our appreciation of these fascinating representations of women.

In recent years traditional foundations of respect for others have been challenged on the basis that universal grounds -- the assumption that we share a common humanity -- have resulted in the exclusion of particular others from full moral consideration or respect. This current questioning of the concept of a common humanity is of enormous significance, in that universalism has been one of the central assumptions of modern western philosophy and a foundational key to its moral and political theory. This book attempts to address the question of just what grounds are needed in order to justify respect for others, and in addressing this question raises issues of fundamental importance; such as, what exactly does it mean to be human? On what basis can we claim that all humans are equal? Are there differences between animals and humans, and are these differences of moral significance -- that is, should animals be accorded the same respect as humans? The author not only critically assesses past and current arguments for and against a common humanity, but also provides a distinctively new conceptualization of what it might mean to be human -- and why being human is indeed morally significant.

This is perfect for fans of Kim Harrison, Jim Butcher, Jennifer Estep, Jenn Bennett, and fantasy lovers everywhere. Through no fault of her own, Alix has found herself essential to the fate of the world as we know it. She didn’t mean for this to happen—she was quite happy being merely the notorious antiquities thief, and ex-archeologist, known as Owl. However, years ago, Owl reluctantly entered the secret world of the supernatural. Her goals: complete one job, escape one bounty on her head, continue her thieving in peace. Fast forward to today. Now, she has become a key player in a brutal paranormal civil war that is rapidly getting out of hand. The leader of one of these factions—a lethal opponent called the Electric Samurai—grows more powerful by the second. To stop him, Owl sets out to find the long-lost, legendary group known as the Tiger Thieves. But will it be too little too late? One thing Owl misses about “normal” archaeology: there are few emergencies with thousand-year-old relics.
After a year and a half of deep depressions, suicide attempts and numerous self-injury caused scars, Kristi Smith was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, general anxiety disorder and borderline personality disorder. Add into all of this a growing awareness of her exclusive sexual attraction to women and you ve got just a taste of the hard time Kristi has had trying to hold onto her faith. The struggle to hold onto her faith has never been because of disbelief in God, but rather trying to see a loving God through the haze of depression and the loneliness of celibacy. Through her ensuing struggles she learned to cope in whatever ways she could, often turning to a razor blade for comfort. Writing became one of the best outlets for her pain and perhaps the most positive coping method she has learned to date. The Chaos of My Mind is composed of three years of those inspiring journals. But be warned in order to appreciate the light at the end of the tunnel for what it is, you have to also see the darkness, the all-encompassing hopelessness that comes before.
Early Christian Dress is the first full-length monograph on the subject of dress in early Christianity. It pays attention to the ways in which dress expressed and shaped Christian identity, the role dress played in Christians’ rivalries with pagan neighbours, and especially to the ways in which notions of gender were culled and revised in the process. Although many scholars have argued that gender in late antiquity was a performed and embodied category, few have paid attention to the ways in which dress and physical appearances were implicated in the understanding of femininity and masculinity. This study addresses that gap, revealing the amount of sartorial work necessary to secure stable gender categories in the worlds of early Imperial pagans and late ancient Christians. This study analyzes several vigorous discussions and debates that arose over Christian women’s dress. It examines how Christians interpreted their dress—especially the dress of female ascetics—as evidence of Christianity’s advanced morality and piety, a morality and piety that was coded "masculine." Yet even Christian leaders who championed ascetic women’s ability to achieve a degree of virility in terms of their virtue and spiritual status were troubled when ascetics’ dress threatened to materially dissolve gender categories, difference, and hierarchies. In the end, the study enables us to gain a broader view of how gender was constructed, perceived, and contested in early Christianity.
Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the richly patterned six-story brick and terra-cotta Ursuline Academy has graced the city of Great Falls for over a century.
