I’ve already proved I’m a coward. Now I have two options: waste away or become the sorceress I was born to be. I watched my entire village die, betrayed by our own. Instead of dying with them, I hid behind my weak magic to save myself–and got caught in the traitors' spell. Now I’m bonded to a servant of Death, immune to time, healing from any injury. Trapped on this earth with my grief and my guilt. I quickly learn the world is filled with more evil than I ever imagined, and my power is no match for it. I know Emrick can help me, but doing so would break his one rule: never get involved in the mortal world. Bond or no bond, I don't know if I can sway him. Especially not as my feelings for him grow as confusing as the rapidly-changing world. I couldn't save my family, a failure that will haunt me for the rest of my long life, but if I become a strong enough sorceress, a skilled enough hunter, maybe I stand a chance at redemption. Set nearly a millennium before the main series, this exciting Immortal Sorceress prequel offers sorcery, danger, and a love story that spans centuries.
I finally put my past behind me only to find my future at risk. One more hunt, I promised myself. One more death, and then I could hang up my guardian's cloak and put my magical self out to pasture. But with every enemy I take down, another one strikes. And this time they hit me where it hurts—in my bond with Emrick, the servant of Death who holds my heart and my immortality. For the first time in almost nine hundred years, my life hangs in the balance. But I have friends now, a family, a reason to keep going. If I don't discover who's hunting me— and fast—everything I've built for myself will burn.
Naya Reed has come a long way from being on her deathbed. With her dragonbond fully integrated and her connection to Dunyari growing deeper by the day, her future should look bright. But trouble looms in every direction. Sera, the dragon girl who once tried to destroy the Veil, is back, and this time she's determined to destroy the world to keep her dragon family safe. To stop her, Naya will have to use every ounce of her training as the next leader of House Feldall--a role she isn't sure she wants anymore after tasting the life of a dragon messenger, including the love of a handsome Nayis man. As Naya faces down one threat after another, she watches her life transform in ways she couldn't imagine. But as the country burns and her future looms, how much will she lose as she struggles to find her place? Cairnfire is the long-awaited finale of the Nayis Trilogy. Return to Andvell in this epic fantasy adventure that embraces found family, hope in the darkness, and the struggle of following one's own path.
After 850 years, you'd think I'd have cleaned this place up by now. I didn't choose immortality. I had it foisted upon me by a trio of overambitious fellow sorceresses working a spell they didn't fully understand. To prevent anything like that spell from happening again, I've devoted my life to protecting the balance between magical and mundane. After almost a millennium hunting monsters and keeping witches in line, the thrill is gone. My heart's not in it anymore, and my once-flourishing powers have begun to wane. Add in the recent strain of dealing with my ex, a servant of death who happens to be the force binding me to existence, and damn, do I need a vacation. But when a blood mage with familiar ambitions begins gathering tools for a deadly ritual, I can't stand by and do nothing. Not when his success means a bloody history repeating itself. To stop him, I'll need to dust off decades of apathy and appeal to the single surviving ally I haven't driven away, but first I need to access my full power. If I can remember how. It's time for me to pull up my big sorceress panties and remind everyone who's boss.
From the 1860s through the early twentieth century, Great Britain saw the rise of the department store and the institutionalization of a gendered sphere of consumption. Come Buy, Come Buy considers representations of the female shopper in British women’s writing and demonstrates how women’s shopping practices are materialized as forms of narrative, poetic, and cultural inscription, showing how women writers emphasize consumerism as productive of pleasure rather than the condition of seduction or loss. Krista Lysack examines works by Christina Rossetti, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, George Eliot, and Michael Field, as well as the suffragette newspaper Votes for Women, in order to challenge the dominant construction of Victorian femininity as characterized by self-renunciation and the regulation of appetite. Come Buy, Come Buy considers not only literary works, but also a variety of archival sources (shopping guides, women’s fashion magazines, household management guides, newspapers, and advertisements) and cultural practices (department store shopping, shoplifting and kleptomania, domestic economy, and suffragette shopkeeping). With this wealth of sources, Lysack traces a genealogy of the woman shopper from dissident domestic spender to aesthetic connoisseur, from curious shop-gazer to political radical.

Recourse to restrictions of international trade for the promotion of non-economic goals is at the heart of international trade regulation. This book offers a fresh, broad, but equally detailed analysis of such restrictions. It places WTO law in the broader framework of public international law and explores new ways and means as to how tensions and conflict in the pursuit of non-economic policy goals should be addressed. It is essential reading for all seeking answers beyond the existing framework of WTO law and policies.' Thomas Cottier, World Trade Institute, University of Bern, Switzerland and Institute of European and International Economic Law 'This book presents a thoughtful and very readable analysis of "social trade regulation", that is, the use of border measures for non-trade purposes. The study examines how such measures are regarded in international law and in the more specialized law of the World Trade Organization. After she concludes that such unilateral measures may often be illegal under trade law, Professor Schefer's original contribution to the debate is to unpack that unlawful status into the categories of "law-disabling", "law-supporting", and "law-creating" trade regulation. Through a careful exposition of these concepts, the book shows ways in which social trade regulation can improve the progress of the international community.' Steve Charnovitz, The George Washington University, US This original and authoritative book analyzes how the WTO's restrictions on the use of trade measures for social goals affects the development of the law of the international community. The author examines international law on the use of trade measures to promote non-trade values including human health, environmental protection, and cultural diversity in order to determine whether the WTO decisions in these areas promote the development of the international legal system in a way that benefits the individual. Including an analysis of the most important 'trade-&' cases handed down by the WTO's Appellate Body, the book stimulates creative consideration of the extent to which the international trading system's prohibition on the use of trade measures may stifle progress on legal norms that would foster an international community. Krista Nadakavukaren Schefer suggests using the law of equity to fully take into account both the trade and the social issues at stake in any particular case. With its thorough analysis of WTO trade and decisions, this path-breaking book will be a stimulating read for scholars and students of international law, international economic law and international relations.
Stream Ecology: Structure and Function of Running Waters is designed to serve as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and as a reference source for specialists in stream ecology and related fields. This Third Edition is thoroughly updated and expanded to incorporate significant advances in our understanding of environmental factors, biological interactions, and ecosystem processes, and how these vary with hydrological, geomorphological, and landscape setting. The broad diversity of running waters – from torrential mountain brooks, to large, lowland rivers, to great river systems whose basins occupy sub-continents – makes river ecosystems appear overwhelming complex. A central theme of this book is that although the settings are often unique, the processes at work in running waters are general and increasingly well understood. Even as our scientific understanding of stream ecosystems rapidly advances, the pressures arising from diverse human activities continue to threaten the health of rivers worldwide. This book presents vital new findings concerning human impacts, and the advances in pollution control, flow management, restoration, and conservation planning that point to practical solutions. Reviews of the first edition: ".. an unusually lucid and judicious reassessment of the state of stream ecology" Science Magazine "..provides an excellent introduction to the area for advanced undergraduates and graduate students..." Limnology & Oceanography "... a valuable reference for all those interested in the ecology of running waters." Transactions of the American Fisheries Society Reviews of the second edition: "Overall, a must for the field centre and a good starter text in stream ecology." (TEN News, October, 2007) "Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty." (P. R. Pinet, CHOICE, Vol. 45 (7), 2008) "... a very good, fluidly readable book which contains the latest key scientific knowledge of the ecology of running waters." (Daniel Graeber, International Review of Hydrobiology, Vol. 94 (2), 2009)
This book examines the interconnections between punk and alternative comedy (altcom). It explores how punk’s tendency towards humour and parody influenced the trajectory taken by altcom in the UK, and the punk strategies introduced when altcom sought self-definition against dominant established trends. The Punk Turn in Comedy considers the early promise of punk-comedy convergence in Peter Cook and Dudley Moore’s ‘Derek and Clive’, and discusses punk and altcom’s attitudes towards dominant traditions. The chapters demonstrate how punk and altcom sought a direct approach for critique, one that rejected innuendo, while embracing the ‘amateur’ in style and experimenting with audience-performer interaction. Giappone argues that altcom tended to be more consistently politicised than punk, with a renewed emphasis on responsibility. The book is a timely exploration of the ‘punk turn’ in comedy history, and will speak to scholars of both comedy and punk studies.
Uses techniques from psychological science and legal theory to explore police interrogation in the United States Understanding Police Interrogation provides a single comprehensive source for understanding issues relating to police interrogation and confession. It sheds light on the range of factors that may influence the outcome of the interrogation of a suspect, which ones make it more likely that a person will confess, and which may also inadvertently lead to false confessions. There is a significant psychological component to police interrogations, as interrogators may try to build rapport with the suspect, or trick them into thinking there is evidence against them that does not exist. Also important is the extent to which the interrogator is convinced of the suspect’s guilt, a factor that has clear ramifications for today’s debates over treatment of black suspects and other people of color in the criminal justice system. The volume employs a totality of the circumstances approach, arguing that a number of integrated factors, such as the characteristics of the suspect, the characteristics of the interrogators, interrogation techniques and location, community perceptions of law enforcement, and expectations for jurors and judges, all contribute to the nature of interrogations and the outcomes and perceptions of the criminal justice system. The authors argue that by drawing on this approach we can better explain the likelihood of interrogation outcomes, including true and false confessions, and provide both scholars and practitioners with a greater understanding of best practices going forward.
Eventually, most terrorist and guerrilla groups are defeated by governments or gradually die off - sometimes becoming political parties, democratically participating in the non-violent governance of their states. Yet some terrorist and guerrilla groups maintain military capabilities, using violence and democratic participation simultaneously. Here, Krista E. Wiegand examines the different political strategies that Islamist terrorist and guerrilla groups use to achieve their political objectives. Focussing on Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Palestine, Wiegand skilfully reveals the factors that determine why Islamist militant groups become involved in governance as political parties, how mainstream governments may or may not accept them as legitimate, why some groups like al- Gama'a al-Islamiya in Egypt renounce guerrilla tactics, and how some groups govern whilst employing political violence. Bombs and Ballots is a valuable contribution to the study of state-society relations in the Middle East, exposing the blurred line between terrorist activity and governance.

A New York Times bestseller! “We need Krista Tippett’s voice and wisdom now more than ever. She has elevated the art of listening and the practice of being present in a way that is both accessible and soulful. Becoming Wise is what I’ve been waiting for . . . This is brilliant thinking, beautiful storytelling, and practical insight.” —Brené Brown, Ph.D., New York Times bestselling author of Rising Strong “A thoughtful chronicle of spiritual discovery. A hopeful consideration of the human potential for enlightenment.” —Kirkus Reviews "I’m not sure there’s such a thing as the cultural 'center,' nor that it’s very interesting if it exists. But left of center and right of center, in the expansive middle and heart of our life together, most of us have some questions left alongside our answers, some curiosity alongside our convictions. This book is for people who want to take up the great questions of our time with imagination and courage, to nurture new realities in the spaces we inhabit, and to do so expectantly and with joy." In Becoming Wise, Krista Tippett has created a master class in living for a fractured world. Fracture, she says, is not the whole story of our time. The enduring question of what it means to be human has become inextricable from the challenge of who we are to one another. She insists on the possibility of personal depth and common life for this century, nurtured by science and “spiritual technologies,” with civility and love as muscular public practice. And, accompanied by a cross-disciplinary dream team of a teaching faculty, she shows us how.
In this age of climatic and financial uncertainty, it becomes increasingly important to balance the cost, benefits and risk of wildfire management. In the United States, increased wildland fire activity over the last 15 years has resulted in drastic damage and loss of life. An associated rapid increase in fire management costs has consumed higher portions of budgets of public entities involved in wildfire management, challenging their ability to fulfill other responsibilities. Increased public scrutiny highlights the need to improve wildland fire management for cost effectiveness. This book closely examines the development of basic wildfire suppression cost models for the United States and their application to a wide range of settings from informing incident decision making to programmatic review. The book also explores emerging trends in suppression costs and introduces new spatially explicit cost models to account for characteristics of the burned landscape. Finally, it discusses how emerging risk assessment tools can be better informed by integrating management cost models with wildfire simulation models and values at risk. Economics of Wildfire Management is intended for practitioners as a reference guide. Advanced-level students and researchers will also find the book invaluable.

The school accountability movement’s focus solely on improving standardized test scores is dehumanizing. There is no standardized child. In the rush to quantify, evaluate, and ostensibly improve the American educational system, we have forgotten that education is complicated. Any attempt to distill it into a simplistic measure will fall short – and will compromise the nobility of the work. How can teachers continue to do the incredibly challenging work of effective education in an environment that can be downright damaging? We can save the soul of education by resisting the dehumanization of students. Teachers can shield children by embracing social-emotional learning, building trust, and displaying compassion. There is no quick-fix to creating a nurturing relationship. There is no single data point that can measure it. Teachers must commit to being present, paying attention, maintaining consistency, engaging in hard work, practicing humility, and working together. Angels and Superheroes provides specific, reproducible practices designed to help teachers cultivate trust and compassion, while managing the pressures of the testing movement. With time-proven theories and cutting-edge research, this book provides engaging examples, concrete strategies, and implementable resources to support teachers in bridging the divide between why they chose this career field – the children, and that which is currently being required of them – the test scores.

Our Choices, Our Lives: Unapologetic Writings on Abortion A riveting collection of writings, Our Choices, Our Lives challenges those who reduce abortion to "pro" and "anti," and reveals the many faces of the abortion issue. The anthology explores the people behind the political question: Should abortion be legal? Our Choices, Our Lives takes the abortion issue to a new level. Women's personal testimonies about their abortion experiences reveal the liberating, sometimes poignant, reality that can accompany the choice to end an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy. Women's health care workers, from counselors to doctors, compassionately bear witness to women's abortion experiences, and provide patients with medical and educational services in an environment that can be physically and emotionally dangerous to both themselves and their patients. Our Choices, Our Lives concludes with the critical deconstruction of the state of abortion politics by political and religious activists and outlines the political, social, economic and moral imperatives behind protecting a woman's right to choose abortion.

And here I thought it was all about me. No one has ever accused me of being humble, but I never would have imagined that the group behind my recent problems had someone else in their sights all along. They’ve captured Emrick, my heart, soul and connection to this world, and I’m preparing for war to get him back. We don’t know what the enemy’s endgame is, but if they’ve snared a servant of Death, whatever they’re after could endanger the fate of the world. Along with my team, I’ll stand in their way, and Death itself will have to wait its turn. Because I’m not done yet. Not by a long shot.
