Everyone has a secret to hide, even if they don’t know what it is… Keely is a veterinarian who always seems too busy to let anyone get too close to her. Although she seems to get along with everyone from her furry patients to her over-caffeinated coworkers, Keely spends most of her time alone. It isn't until Police Officer Garrett Murphy arrests her heart against her will that Keely can even imagine letting someone else into her life. She finds herself in a whirlwind of emotions, losing sleep and her sense of self as she and Garrett grow closer. But in addition to her confused heart, there's something dark from her past in the back of her mind that won't allow Keely to get too comfortable with falling in love. Unsure as to whether it is better to follow her heart, or to let her fears get the best of her, Keely must decide if she's going to let Garrett into her life or if the voices calling from her past will keep her alone. Keely doesn't remember what past event hardened her heart, until tonight...
Uses techniques from psychological science and legal theory to explore police interrogation in the United States Understanding Police Interrogation provides a single comprehensive source for understanding issues relating to police interrogation and confession. It sheds light on the range of factors that may influence the outcome of the interrogation of a suspect, which ones make it more likely that a person will confess, and which may also inadvertently lead to false confessions. There is a significant psychological component to police interrogations, as interrogators may try to build rapport with the suspect, or trick them into thinking there is evidence against them that does not exist. Also important is the extent to which the interrogator is convinced of the suspect’s guilt, a factor that has clear ramifications for today’s debates over treatment of black suspects and other people of color in the criminal justice system. The volume employs a totality of the circumstances approach, arguing that a number of integrated factors, such as the characteristics of the suspect, the characteristics of the interrogators, interrogation techniques and location, community perceptions of law enforcement, and expectations for jurors and judges, all contribute to the nature of interrogations and the outcomes and perceptions of the criminal justice system. The authors argue that by drawing on this approach we can better explain the likelihood of interrogation outcomes, including true and false confessions, and provide both scholars and practitioners with a greater understanding of best practices going forward.
Pack a dramatic, spiritual, and emotional punch with your story! Novelist Krista Wagner presents a story-structure guide for writers to explore and create a world of spiritual dramatic suspense. Using one of her stories as a template, she walks you through how to craft a tension-infused story that hits all the reader's expectations. In this reader-friendly book, Wagner introduces the spiritual dramatic suspense genre and then shows you how to: * Create a compelling novel by establishing and maintaining the facets of this genre throughout your story, including the pivotal plot points like: riveting red herrings and persuasive peak tensions, dead on pacing, dynamic and functional setting and tone, and tantalizing twists. * Create irresistible characters with internal and external conflicts, believable flaws, and tension-infused dialogue. * Test a character's faith, delicately handling the hard truths of life, capturing the spiritual struggle, and articulating victory over despair/adversity. * Keep the reader tied into the story without being preachy or author intrusive. Wagner provides commentary on the various aspects, themes, and tropes of the genre as she takes you on a journey through one of her spiritual dramatic suspense novels (Intent: Deadly Secrets) to make the experience concrete and hands-on. At the end of each chapter, you will find an exercise specially designed to implement the various facets in your own work such as increasing tension, crafting complicated twists, externalizing a character's thoughts, and developing a believable character arc.
This book examines the interconnections between punk and alternative comedy (altcom). It explores how punk’s tendency towards humour and parody influenced the trajectory taken by altcom in the UK, and the punk strategies introduced when altcom sought self-definition against dominant established trends. The Punk Turn in Comedy considers the early promise of punk-comedy convergence in Peter Cook and Dudley Moore’s ‘Derek and Clive’, and discusses punk and altcom’s attitudes towards dominant traditions. The chapters demonstrate how punk and altcom sought a direct approach for critique, one that rejected innuendo, while embracing the ‘amateur’ in style and experimenting with audience-performer interaction. Giappone argues that altcom tended to be more consistently politicised than punk, with a renewed emphasis on responsibility. The book is a timely exploration of the ‘punk turn’ in comedy history, and will speak to scholars of both comedy and punk studies.
What do you do when your world ends? At twenty-eight years old, Krista Schlyer sold almost everything she owned and packed the rest of it in a station wagon bound for the American wild. Her two best friends joined her—one a grumpy, grieving introvert, the other a feisty dog—and together they sought out every national park, historic site, forest, and wilderness they could get to before their money ran out or their minds gave in. The journey began as a desperate escape from urban isolation, heartbreak, and despair, but became an adventure beyond imagining. Chronicling their colorful escapade, Almost Anywhere explores the courage, cowardice, and heroics that live in all of us, as well as the life of nature and the nature of life. This eloquent and accessible memoir is at once an immersion in the pain of losing someone particularly close and especially young and a healing journey of a broken life given over to the whimsy and humor of living on the road.

Negative emotions like anger, spite, contempt, and envy are widely seen as obstacles to a good life. They are like the weeds in a garden that need to be pulled up before they choke out the nice plants. This book argues that bad feelings aren't the weeds; they are the worms. Many people are squeamish about them and would prefer to pretend they aren't there, but the presence of worms mean the garden it thriving. I draw on insights from the history of philosophy to show what we've gotten wrong about bad feelings and to see how we can live better with them. The first half of the book argues that there is nothing wrong with negative emotions and that their bad reputation is undeserved. Philosophers have long argued that our emotions are part of how we value things and bad feelings are not different. Negative emotions are expressions of self-love-not egoism or selfishness, but the felt attachment to ourselves and our lives. We feel negative emotions because our lives matter to us. The second half of the book takes a detailed look at individual bad feelings: anger, envy and jealousy, spite and Schadenfreude, and contempt. I show how all our negative emotions are valuable parts of our attachment to our lives. We don't have to battle negative emotions or "channel" them into something productive. Bad feelings aren't obstacles to a good life; they are part of what makes life meaningful"--
