Recent advances in technology have greatly impacted upon the practice of nuclear medicine in general, and the approach to hepatobiliary diseases in particular. Empha sis is now placed more on non-invasive functional imaging with quantification, a feature unique to nuclear medicine and not available from any other competing diag nostic imaging modality. By providing a measure of severity of disease, quantification aids not only in timing of therapy but also for testing whether or not the chosen therapy has achieved the intended goals and objectives. This is the first textbook of its kind in the new millennium on nuclear hepatology to fully integrate quantitative physiology with morphology in the diagnosis of hepatobiliary diseases. The conception of nuclear hepatology occurred in the late 1940s with the introduc tion of radiocolloids, whose rate of clearance from blood was used as a measure of hepatic blood flow. Radiocolloid imaging of the liver, introduced first in the mid 1950s, was the most popular nuclear medicine imaging procedure in the 1970s and early 1980s, accounting for nearly 50% of the total workload in many nuclear medicine departments.

In this book, modeling and control design of electric motors, namely step motors, brushless DC motors and induction motors, are considered. The book focuses on recent advances on feedback control designs for various types of electric motors, with a slight emphasis on stepper motors. For this purpose, the authors explore modeling of these devices to the extent needed to provide a high-performance controller, but at the same time one amenable to model-based nonlinear designs. The control designs focus primarily on recent robust adaptive nonlinear controllers to attain high performance. It is shown that the adaptive robust nonlinear controller on its own achieves reasonably good performance without requiring the exact knowledge of motor parameters. While carefully tuned classical controllers often achieve required performance in many applications, it is hoped that the advocated robust and adaptive designs will lead to standard universal controllers with minimal need for fine tuning of control parameters.

Parthiban Kanavu (Parthiban's Dream) was a novel Kalki R. Krishnamurthy penned as a weekly serial beginning 1941 in Kalki, the magazine that he had founded. Written in simple and elegant prose, Parthiban Kanavu is a breezy fictional historical romance in which good triumphs over evil and the lovers overcome obstacles posed by dynastic affiliations, intrigue and separation to be united in matrimony. The novel was an instant hit and was made into a Tamil film starring Gemini Ganesan, Vyjayanthimala and S.V. Ranga Rao in 1960. Parthiban Kanavu is an important milestone in Kalki's illustrious literary career. It offered tantalizing perspectives of his literary style and what would be his more critically acclaimed works that followed. Vivid descriptions of nature, flora and fauna formed memorable backdrops against which Kalki's gripping plots unfolded. While the stories he told were timeless ones of valour, romance and hope, his characters never conformed to the binaries of good and evil, instead portraying the various shades of grey and ambiguities that encapsulate what it means to be human. Kalki's characters communicated his unequivocal views on politics and war. That religion and politics are an undesirable and combustible combination, that the adverse impact of wars on the environment and civilians far outweighs the political gains, and that civilians ought not to be harassed when a war is under way - are recurring themes.

This book is written as an introduction to the theory of error-free computation. In addition, we include several chapters that illustrate how error-free com putation can be applied in practice. The book is intended for seniors and first year graduate students in fields of study involving scientific computation using digital computers, and for researchers (in those same fields) who wish to obtain an introduction to the subject. We are motivated by the fact that there are large classes of ill-conditioned problems, and there are numerically unstable algorithms, and in either or both of these situations we cannot tolerate rounding errors during the numerical computations involved in obtaining solutions to the problems. Thus, it is important to study finite number systems for digital computers which have the property that computation can be performed free of rounding errors. In Chapter I we discuss single-modulus and multiple-modulus residue number systems and arithmetic in these systems, where the operands may be either integers or rational numbers. In Chapter II we discuss finite-segment p-adic number systems and their relationship to the p-adic numbers of Hensel [1908]. Each rational number in a certain finite set is assigned a unique Hensel code and arithmetic operations using Hensel codes as operands is mathe matically equivalent to those same arithmetic operations using the cor responding rational numbers as operands. Finite-segment p-adic arithmetic shares with residue arithmetic the property that it is free of rounding errors.

Chapter I introduces the basic concepts of abstract algebra, including power series and polynomials. The use of these techniques for exact inversion of poly nomial matrices is explained in the light of currently available error-free computation methods.
