`I was taught to take everything I could by any means possible without feeling any sense of remorse, and that coloured the way I saw the world, a world where the strong stomp on everyone below them and doing good is for the naïve. I had been accidentally groomed to meet the requirements of the economic miracle that hit India in the early nineties, where the needs of the individual finally began to be addressed and seen as important, even necessary. Capitalism started seeping into our very marrow and socialistic gangrene seeped away, having only found a place in history as a well-intentioned failure. Nehru?s dream was finally dead and I think I helped deliver its death knell...? In the heart of Lutyens? Delhi ? as politicians, power-brokers, media moguls, and bureaucrats go peaceably about their business of amassing unlimited personal wealth, occasionally getting ensnared in their own webs of scandal and sleaze ? the President of India, an ex-army chief, throws everyone into shock by defying his rubber-stamp status and threatening to establish military rule. Only Jasjit Sidhu, his sometime son-in-law, erstwhile corporate banker and money launderer, and newly returned to India as personal financial adviser to Prime Minister Paresh Yadav, can bring him to heel. Brilliantly plotted and bitingly written, Delhi Durbar is an astute and gripping political novel, in which the outrageous twists and turns of the empowered corrupt and their fiercely self-serving agendas makes for a political thriller of a uniquely Indian flavour.
This book presents a pedagogical account of the physics of partially ionized plasmas starting from first principles. It includes a set of unsolved problems at the cutting edge of research in the field, from the formulation to the application level.
Can Parliament and the Union Government deprive Indians of their cultural heritage right to monuments? How has this deprivation been achieved by using the legislative process? Has the judicial culture of the Supreme Court been able to return to Indians this cultural heritage right? Can nationally important monuments be protected in a contrary political economy? How to retrieve and restore to Indians the fundamental right to the distinct culture of monuments by understanding what a monument is?
All materials have voids in them, at some scale. Sometimes the voids are ignored, sometimes they are taken into account, and other times they are the focal point of the research. Voids in Materials: From Unavoidable Defects to Designed Cellular Materials takes due notice of all these occurrences, whether designed or unavoidable defects. We define, categorize, and characterize the voids (or empty spaces in materials) and we analyze the effects they have on material properties. This second edition is an updated and expanded central reference for voids in materials and covers all types of voids, intrinsic and intentional, and stochastic and nonstochastic, and the processes and conditions that are needed to create them and is a valuable resource to students in the areas of mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, physics, and chemistry, as well as scientists, researchers, and engineers in industry. - the effect of voids in materials; from low volume fraction defects and free volume in polymer networks to high void volume fraction foams and aerogels - how and why voids are introduced into materials across the length scales - biomaterial design used in vivo for soft, hard, and nerve tissue scaffolds - metallic and geopolymeric foams - additive manufacturing technologies used to tailor regularity (R) in the cell structure - stochastic, nonstochastic, and Voronoi foams - the latest techniques for characterizing voids - new chapters, covering the Kirkendall effect to create hollow and porous structures, and nanometer scale voids: nanotubes, zeolites, organic frameworks, and nanoporous noble metals
In the last few years, a significant increase in applications of MMCs has taken place, particularly in the areas of automotive, aerospace, electronics, and recreation. These include continuous fiber reinforced MMCs for cables in power transmission, high temperature superconducting wires, particulate MMCs in civilian aircraft and automotive applications, and high volume fraction, high thermal conductivity substrates for electronic packaging. Nevertheless, as with any novel material systems, there is a lack of fundamental understanding on the part of practicing engineers and designers. This book would seek to address these issues, in a thorough and cohesive manner, as well as to provide students and scientists with a basic understanding of MMCs. This book will emphasize the synergistic relationships among processing, structure, and properties of metal matrix composites.
Composite Materials Science and Engineering focuses on the structure-property relationships in composite materials. A detailed description is given of how microstructure of different fibers (such as glass, Kevlar, polyethylene, carbon, boron, silicon, carbide, alumina etc.) controls their characteristics. The important role of interface in composite materials is discussed. Up to date information about the recent advances in polymer matrix-, metal matrix-, and ceramic matrix composites is provided. Micro- and macromechanical aspects of composite materials as well as their strength, fracture, and design aspects are described in detail - always emphasizing the basic theme of how the structure controls the resultant properties. Extensive use is made of micrographs and line drawings to bring home to the reader the importance of structure-property relationships in composites. Throughout the book, examples are given from practical applications of composites in various fields. Extensive references to the literature, general bibliography, as well as practice problems are provided. The book is intended for undergraduates (senior level) and first year graduate students as well as the practicing engineer/scientist in the industry.
After an introductory chapter, the processing, microstructure, and properties of various ceramic materials, reinforcements, and their composites are described. A separate chapter is devoted to processing of ceramic reinforcements, with a special emphasis on fibers. Processing of ceramic matrix composites is the next chapter, which includes novel techniques such as sol-gel processing and ceramics from polymeric precursors. The next four chapters cover the subjects of interface region in ceramic composites, mechanical and physical properties, and the role of thermal stresses and the important subject of toughness enhancement. Laminated composites made of ceramics are described in a separate chapter. Finally, a chapter is devoted to various applications of ceramic matrix composites. Throughout the text, the underlying relationships between the components of the triad: processing, microstructure, and properties are brought out. An exhaustive list of references and suggested reading is provided.

Included on BookBub’s "The Most Exciting Memoirs Coming Out in 2018” list Krishan Bedi came to the United States in December of 1961 at the tender age of twenty. He had only $300 in his pocket, and he had made it out of his small village in India on sheer faith, determined to get education in the US. For him, there was no option but to succeed—so he began his new life in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he had to adapt to the culture shock not only of being in the US but a Punjabi man in the South in the 1960s. Engineering a Life is an examination of Bedi’s life, and how he has handled the plethora of curve balls thrown his way with determination, humor, and an unwavering faith that everything would work out. This is a book about values and faith and the importance of friendship, family, and hard work. It’s a story about achieving the American Dream, proving that no matter how thoroughly you map out your life’s journey, no matter how many blueprints you draw up, when you veer off the course you’ve plotted—as we all do, somehow, in the end—you end up where you’re supposed to be.
Because of their complexity and scale, metro structures capture all the essential aspects of a cut-and-cover structure, and so are given primary focus in this book. The design of a metro construction is outlined coherently and in detail; and the reader is shown how to apply this design process equally well to other, relatively simple, cut-and-cover structures. Geotechnical and structural engineering principles are combined with both design and construction practice to make this book a unique guide for engineers.
The book in nine chapters, provides an insight to life of a common man; not in form of biography but as actually lived at different places in pursuit of overall growth. Leaving aside fear of success or failure, managed the life with risk inclination and dynamism by embracing new opportunities instead of hanging up with nitty-gritty issues. My life is my responsibility and have lived as original self without drowning inner voice for fear of others. Perseverance has helped doing things with own initiative lest others feel indispensable. The book also contains useful information on places, people, public service, historical events, political dexterity of those at helms of affairs and new experiences of the era; which should be an educative material for old as well as new generation readers.
Applying cutting-edge psychiatric theories to an analysis of online Taliban literature in four languages, Neil Krishan Aggarwal constructs a game-changing narrative of the organization's broad appeal and worldview. Aggarwal, a cultural psychiatrist, focuses on the Taliban's creation of culture, evoking religion in Arabic and English writings, nationalism in Dari sources, and regionalism in Urdu texts. The group also promotes a specific form of argumentation, citing religious scriptures in Arabic works, canonical poets in Dari and Urdu writings, and scholars and journalists in English publications. Aggarwal shows how the Taliban categorize all Muslims as members and all non-Muslims as outsiders; how they convince Muslims of the need for violence; and how they apply the insider/outsider dichotomy to foreign policy. By understanding these themes, Aggarwal argues, we can craft better countermessaging strategies.

The first most pertinent question I faced before I could start narrating my story was, what title would sum up the essence of my journey? I thought the title should be apt and inspiring enough for me to stay focused on basic nuances that formed my core belief. A lot of churning spread over few weeks helped and I zeroed in on Karmath Jeevan. To me it means a world and is the most apt description of my life. Simply put, Karmath Jeevan means an action-oriented life; a life dedicated to sincere hard work as a dharma (duty) without undue anxiety for the results. I consider I lived in practice by this principle though not as an articulated thought. The house-hold environment during my childhood days and formative years led me to follow the elders especially my mother, my brother-in-law and two sisters whose daily routines, though apparently ordinary and simple, greatly impacted my mind and my thought process. The visits to temples along with them and listening to discourses of holy men/women influenced me. I learnt; one should focus on the task ahead, act sincerely with honesty of purpose and be satisfied. That was said to be a clear path to leading a meaningful, satisfying and fulfilling life.
