Andrei Kozyrev was foreign minister of Russia under President Boris Yeltsin from August 1991 to January 1996. During the August 1991 coup attempt against Mikhail Gorbachev, he was present when tanks moved in to seize the Russian White House, where Boris Yeltsin famously stood on a tank to address the crowd assembled. He then departed to Paris to muster international support and, if needed, to form a Russian government-in-exile. He participated in the negotiations at Brezhnev’s former hunting lodge in Belazheva, Belarus where the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus agreed to secede from the Soviet Union and form a Commonwealth of Independent States. Kozyrev’s pro-Western orientation made him an increasingly unpopular figure in Russia as Russia’s spiraling economy and the emergence of ultra-wealthy oligarchs soured ordinary Russians on Western ideas of democracy and market capitalism. The Firebird takes the reader into the corridors of power to provide a startling eyewitness account of the collapse of the Soviet Union, the struggle to create a democratic Russia in its place, and how the promise of a better future led to the tragic outcome that changed our world forever.
Patricia is a young American doctor who comes to Russia during the raging years of the country’s attempt to create a democratic nation after the specter of Soviet totalitarianism. As an emerging democracy makes everything seem possible, Pat meets a brave security officer named Victor, and they fall in love. However, their romance begins to crumble as the KGB regains power and forges an unholy alliance with a priest and his shadowy cabal, which is but a fraction of an international conspiracy that professes, and practices, centuries-old black magic known as “the Caligula curse.” The noose of corruption and anti-American sentiments tightens around Pat and Victor. The couple tries to save their love as dark forces seize Russia. Danger arises in America. Powerful conspiracies, an ancient curse, and modern fallacies work against democracy and personal freedom. Pat, her love and friends are in mortal danger.

We hope that this book will prove useful for readers who wish to become familiar with the Russian copyright law. It should be especially helpful for businessmen, lawyers, publishers, scholars and general users, whose activity involves dealing with Russian copyright and other legal issues. Russian copyright law has changed dramatically over its 200-year history. In 1993 it was entirely rewritten, to bring it closer to its counterparts in most European states. Nevertheless, it retains a number of peculiarities. Now, being a part of the Russia’s Civil Code, Part 4, with several amendments made to it, the Copyright legislation has been kept basically intact as it is described in this book. Although the legislative acts are relatively brief, and appear straightforward, Russian copyright law has a number of unpleasant traps for those not completely familiar with its provisions and how they are applied in practice. We believe that this book will help readers to avoid these traps. Also, this book explains how to take legal action against copyright violators, to defend unjustified claims of copyright infringement, to register copyright, to formalize transfer or acquisition agreements, and to resolve other problems that arise in routine practice.
