In order to analyze the light of cosmic objects, particularly at extremely great distances, spectroscopy is the workhorse of astronomy. In the era of very large telescopes, long-term investigations are mainly performed with small professional instruments. Today they can be done using self-designed spectrographs and highly efficient CCD cameras, without the need for large financial investments. This book explains the basic principles of spectroscopy, including the fundamental optical constraints and all mathematical aspects needed to understand the working principles in detail. It covers the complete theoretical and practical design of standard and Echelle spectrographs. Readers are guided through all necessary calculations, enabling them to engage in spectrograph design. The book also examines data acquisition with CCD cameras and fiber optics, as well as the constraints of specific data reduction and possible sources of error. In closing it briefly highlights some main aspects of the research on massive stars and spectropolarimetry as an extension of spectroscopy. The book offers a comprehensive introduction to spectroscopy for students of physics and astronomy, as well as a valuable resource for amateur astronomers interested in learning the principles of spectroscopy and spectrograph design.
The Peptides, Volume I: Methods of Peptide Synthesis focuses on detailed description of protecting groups, individual amino acids, and coupling reactions. The publication first offers information on amino-protecting and carboxyl-protecting groups, including carboxyl protection by salt formation, esterification, and amide formation and acyl-type, alkyl-type, and urethane protecting groups. The text then examines the formation of the peptide bond and amino acids. Discussions focus on amino acids with the alcoholic hydroxyl group, sulfur amino acids, basic and acidic amino acids, synthesis of peptides by activation of the amino group, and peptide synthesis by activation of the carboxyl group. The manuscript elaborates on the synthesis of cyclic peptides, depsipeptides, peptoids, and the plastein reaction. Topics include synthesis of plastein-active peptides, glycopeptides, phosphopeptides, and S-peptides. The publication is a dependable source of data for readers interested in the methods of peptide synthesis.
Mass customization is a business concept for every organization. Mass customization is not simply understood as a business strategy, but also as a concept for supporting other business goals such as the operation of a mass or craft manufacturing business. This book presents seven different mass customization strategies and the competencies needed to successfully implement theses strategies. The findings presented with this book and doctoral dissertation are derived from case study research. The book documents 14 mass customization case studies and presents a new form of case study research, the industry research group. "Mass Customization Strategies" is recommended for researchers in the field of mass customization and customer integration as well as for managers and consultants. The author - Klaus Moser - is a Project Leader at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and a research affiliate of the TUM Research Centre for Mass Customization & Customer Integration, Technische Universitaet Muenchen, Germany.
