This book explores postmodern choreographic engagements of pregnant bodies in the US over the last 70 years. Johanna Kirk discusses how choreographers negotiate identification with the look of their pregnant bodies to maintain a sense of integrity as artists and to control representations of their gender and physical abilities while pregnant. Across chapters, the artists discussed include Anna Halprin, Trisha Brown, Twyla Tharp, Sandy Jamrog, Jane Comfort, Jody Oberfelder, Jawole Willa, Miguel Gutiérrez, Yanira Castro, Noémie LaFrance, and Meg Foley. By presenting their bodies in performance, these artists demonstrate how their experiences surrounding pregnancy intersect not only with their artform and its history but also with their personal experiences of race, gender, and sexual identification. In these pages, Johanna Kirk argues that choreography offers them tools that are alternative to medicine (or other forms of social representation) for understanding what/how pregnant bodies do and feel and what they can mean for individuals and their communities. The works within these chapters invite readers to see dancing bodies and pregnant bodies in new ways and for their potential to manifest new possibilities. This study will be of great interest to students and scholars exploring dance, theatre and performance, race, and gender.
Lacanian Fantasy addresses the question of how fantasy developed as a psychological concept, particularly as influenced by Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan. Kirk Turner moves thematically, from childhood to adulthood, and chronologically, from Freud’s earliest theories to Lacan’s most complex statements on fantasy towards the end of his career. He explores not only the variations that the concept has undergone throughout its history – from Ancient Greek discourse around phantasia to the present day – but also the changing consequences of its applications. Lacanian Fantasy includes further insights on our current predicament: the age of the social media image and fantasy in the uncertain ‘locked down’ world of a pandemic. Spanning numerous examples, both historical and recent, this book explores relatable forms of fantasy life. In bridging psychology and philosophy, as well as gender and sexuality studies, it ultimately opens new perspectives on fantasy. This book will be of interest to psychoanalytic practitioners and humanities scholars, as well as students interested in critical theory.
The amount of algebraic topology a graduate student specializing in topology must learn can be intimidating. Moreover, by their second year of graduate studies, students must make the transition from understanding simple proofs line-by-line to understanding the overall structure of proofs of difficult theorems. To help students make this transition, the material in this book is presented in an increasingly sophisticated manner. It is intended to bridge the gap between algebraic and geometric topology, both by providing the algebraic tools that a geometric topologist needs and by concentrating on those areas of algebraic topology that are geometrically motivated. Prerequisites for using this book include basic set-theoretic topology, the definition of CW-complexes, some knowledge of the fundamental group/covering space theory, and the construction of singular homology. Most of this material is briefly reviewed at the beginning of the book. The topics discussed by the authors include typical material for first- and second-year graduate courses. The core of the exposition consists of chapters on homotopy groups and on spectral sequences. There is also material that would interest students of geometric topology (homology with local coefficients and obstruction theory) and algebraic topology (spectra and generalized homology), as well as preparation for more advanced topics such as algebraic $K$-theory and the s-cobordism theorem. A unique feature of the book is the inclusion, at the end of each chapter, of several projects that require students to present proofs of substantial theorems and to write notes accompanying their explanations. Working on these projects allows students to grapple with the “big picture”, teaches them how to give mathematical lectures, and prepares them for participating in research seminars. The book is designed as a textbook for graduate students studying algebraic and geometric topology and homotopy theory. It will also be useful for students from other fields such as differential geometry, algebraic geometry, and homological algebra. The exposition in the text is clear; special cases are presented over complex general statements.
Sil is loving, Sil is principled, Sil is a reluctant hero forced to act. Like Gollum, Toad, Frog, and Kermit, she is a most memorable and endearing amphibian. Lisa Williams Kline, author of One Week of You The Mother’s Wheel is a work of stunning originality, deep poignancy, and non-stop action. Kirk seamlessly blends the dystopian and science fiction genres, creating a world in which the reader can’t help but empathize with the ‘drafts’ who have been bred to serve the Sowers’ will. The determination and bravery of the story’s narrator, Sil, keeps us turning the pages, wondering where Kirk’s vivid imagination will take us next. There are battles, adventures, and struggles for power galore. But ultimately, The Mother’s Wheel is a haunting, heartfelt meditation on love, loss, and what it means to belong to a family.” Emily Colin, New York Times bestselling author of The Memory Thief and award-winning author of The Seven Sins series The Mother’s Wheel is the final, thrilling conclusion to the Indie award-winning Bond Trilogy. Who, in the end, can you count on as family when you are the only one of your kind? Their destinies entwined, Sil, Dinitra, and Fir reunite and must choose between each other and the worlds they once called their own. Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology The Third Edition of the Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology is built on the solid foundation of the previous editions. All of the articles have been rewritten and updated and many new subjects have been added to reflect changes in chemical technology through the 1970s. The new edition, however, will be familiar to users of the earlier editions: comprehensive, authoritative, accessible, lucid. The Encyclopedia remains an indispensable information source for all producers and users of chemical products and materials. In the Third Edition, emphasis is given to major present-day topics of concern to all chemists, scientists, and engineers—energy, health, safety, toxicology, and new materials. New subjects have been added, especially those related to polymer and plastics technology, fuels and energy, inorganic and solid-state chemistry, composite materials, coating, fermentation and enzymes, pharmaceuticals, surfactant technology, fibers and textiles. New features include the use of SI units as well as English units, Chemical Abstracts Service’s Registry Numbers, and complete indexing based on automated retrieval from a machine-readable composition system. Once again this classic serves as an unrivaled library of information for the chemical and allied industries. Some comments about Kirk-Othmer— The First Edition "No reference library worthy of the name will be without this series. It is simply a must for the chemist and chemical engineer…" —Chemical and Engineering News The Second Edition "A necessity for any technical library." —Choice
Contains a library of information for the chemical industry. The 4th edition has undergone a complete revision, with the inclusion of many new subjects which reflect the growth in chemical technology through the 1990s. The book includes expanded coverage of biotechnology and materials science.
