King James VI and I: Political Writings

James VI and I united the crowns of England and Scotland. His books are fundamental sources of the principles which underlay the union. In particular, his Basilikon Doron was a best-seller in England and circulated widely on the Continent. Among the most important and influential British writings of their period, the king's works shed light on the political climate of Shakespeare's England and the intellectual background to the civil wars which afflicted Britain in the mid-seventeenth century. James' political philosophy was a moderated absolutism, with an emphasis on the monarch's duty to rule according to law and the public good. Locke quoted his speech to parliament of 1610 approvingly, and Hobbes likewise praised 'our most wise king'. This edition is the first to draw on all the early texts of James' books, with an introduction setting them in their historical context.

Given the scarcity of this primary source document, it is with great pleasure that the Miscellany Press presents this special unabridged facsimile edition of James' Workes of 1616--we know of no other facsimile or reprint edition as complete. Our edition of James' Workes includes easy-to-understand prefatory materials to help orient the reader to this fascinating volume. We are not sure how any history library could be considered complete without this important title.

She also has suffered many losses in her life such as the loss of her parents, her husband, her oldest son, her vision, and her home. Through all this Esther has managed to keep her faith in God. This book, which is really a collection of some of her newspaper articles written for a local newspaper column, shares her philosophy of life that is based upon her belief in God and the moral lessons taught in the Bible. This book is an easy read because of the brevity of the articles, and her writing is laced with Southern United States colloquialisms and down-home common sense. If you have little time to study, but want to become more familiar with the scriptures, then this is a perfect book for you!
