This book studies the cultural framework of the connections between homeownership and social stability in Hong Kong. In the post-war period, homeownership became the most preferable housing choice in developed societies, such as Australia, Britain, Japan, Spain, and the United States. In the financialization era, its proliferation aggregated enormous wealth and debt in the housing and mortgage markets, affecting social stability by creating inequality and housing unaffordability. Hong Kong is the most extreme example of this among developed societies – in recent years, the city has made international headlines both for its housing problem and its social instability. By studying the history of homeownership in Hong Kong over a period of four decades, Chung-kin Tsang proposes that homeownership is inseparable from the social imagination of the future, conceptualizing this framework as "hope mechanism". This perspective helps trace the connections between ‘House Buying’ as a hope mechanism – one which is central to subject formation, life goals, and temporal mapping for socially shared life planning – and social stability. In the 50 years since the invention of transistor, silicon integrated circuit (IC) technology has made astonishing advances. A key factor that makes these advances possible is the ability to have precise control on material properties and physical dimensions. The introduction of plasma processing in pattern transfer and in thin film deposition is a critical enabling advance among other things. In state of the art silicon Ie manufacturing process, plasma is used in more than 20 different critical steps. Plasma is sometimes called the fourth state of matter (other than gas, liquid and solid). It is a mixture of ions (positive and negative), electrons and neutrals in a quasi-neutral gaseous steady state very far from equilibrium, sustained by an energy source that balances the loss of charged particles. It is a very harsh environment for the delicate ICs. Highly energetic particles such as ions, electrons and photons bombard the surface of the wafer continuously. These bombardments can cause all kinds of damage to the silicon devices that make up the integrated circuits.

For example: Jules Belmont, miserly millionaire who likes to bet and bet big. He also hates to lose—a bet or a dame. Sandy Shaw, a bright and sexy whiz kid who can beat the computer in her specialty of voice prints. Larry LaSalle, her boss, resident expert at UCLA, the man who had designed the computer which can identify any person from his speech patterns. Barbara Belmont, niece of Jules. A hippie girl who lives at sea and tries to keep Roper the same. Frankie Wu, a shadowy Oriental who may be part of an international heroin-smuggling ring. Then there are the other characters Roper knows only as The Rube, Gorilla and Wolfman. He trails this trio to Mexico, where more violence erupts. Then the trail leads back to a beautiful blonde singer in the Gaslight Club in Los Angeles, where there is more violence. There is Tom Power, the ex-basketballer, a man who remembers the favors Gonzaga had done for him. Not to be forgotten among this provocatively mixed cast, are the Great Danes who owned by Gonzaga. Roper has a feeling they will be in a the final kill and only hopes he can beat them to it when he brings down Gonzaga’s murderer.

During the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), the government invited merchants to deliver grain in return for salt certificates with which merchants drew salt as reward. The salt certificate therefore represented a national debt, denominated in salt, the government thereby owed merchants. A speculative market of salt certificates was created in Yangzhou and brought into being powerful financiers in the early 17th century. The government, financially hard pressed, abolished the speculative market of salt certificates by franchising these financiers in return for their hereditary obligation to pay salt certificate surcharge. China was therefore deprived of a possibility to develop a public debt market. This story is a testimony to Fernand Braudel’s argument of the "nondevelopment" of Capitalism in China.

EPT, an offshoot of a wartime operation, occasionally does top, top secret jobs for the CIA and other legal espionage groups. In this case, the girl’s father is manufacturing some highly important electronic gadgets, and there’s some danger that pressure could be exerted o him through his daughter to release secret formulas. The father, who is understandably inimical to Roper’s presence in the case, gives grudging cooperation. The girl is a student at Berkeley, and there Max goes to learn what he can from her friends. He finds one of them almost immediately, an attractive girl whose charms are not improved the condition in which Max finds her, which is very dead. From this opening, there is no letdown to the pace and excitement of The Pushbutton Butterfly, Max Roper’s first case, a provocative introduction.

In this instance, Max is motivated not merely by duty, but by the gnawing thought that he might find a girl inside it, one whose specifications are mind-blowing enough to warrant his putting his life on the line for it. Max finds out what he knew before, that things are seldom what they seem, and a person can get himself severely beat up and even killed trying to dispute the point.

A large number of caryophyllene-type sesquiterpenoids have been isolated from nature. Many of them show a wide range of biological and pharmacological activities. Recently, as highly oxygenated caryophyllene-type sesquiterpenoids, pestalotiopsin A and structurally related natural products such as pestalotiopsin B and C and taedolidol have been isolated from Pestalotiopsis sp. These natural products are characterized by their highly distorted bi- to pentacyclic structures, all including a gem-dimethylated cyclobutane ring as one constituent. Recently, the first asymmetric total synthesis of both enantiomers of pestalotiopsin A was completed by the authors and coworkers, thereby clarifying the previously unknown absolute stereochemistry of this natural product. These total syntheses were achieved by the following notable synthetic concepts: (1) chiral auxiliary-based symmetric synthesis of the functionalized cyclobutane derivatives through the Lewis acid-catalyzed [2+2] cycloaddition between dimethyl ketene diethyl ketal and propiolamide equipped with the Oppolzer's camphorsultam and (2) an intramolecular Nozaki–Hiyama–Kishi cross-coupling mediated by a Cr(II)/catalytic Ni(II) system for high-yielding nine-membered ring formation. In this chapter, the authors also summarize their synthetic approaches toward pestalotiopsin A and related caryophyllene-type sesquiterpenoids, reported so far by Procter and coworkers and Paquette and coworkers. The Procter group has utilized the SmI2-mediated reductive 4-exo-trig cyclization for the efficient construction of the polysubstituted cyclobutane moiety. The Paquette group has demonstrated the effectiveness of the zirconocene-mediated ring contraction strategy for access to the enantiomerically pure multiply functionalized cyclobutane moiety. The highlights of their synthetic endeavors aimed at the total synthesis of pestalotiopsin A are discussed in this chapter.

Roper has to sift through the co-ed part of the gym, including a few of the exercising ladies and their reasons for wanting Witter deader than alive. Also in line for lively suspicion are jealous competitors, last year’s losers and this year’s aspirants. Felix Witter, the victim, has a broken marriage behind him, a disgruntled business agent, an irascible trainer, a jealous girlfriend, a jealous boyfriend, and a tie-in with a nutrition product and a company unable to meet his demands for more money before he goes over to a rival health-kick group. What with karate experts, weight lifters, body builders and college athletes using the gym for work-outs, obviously Roper has a lot of strong men to deal with this time, and he is forced to fight for his own life before he can come up with the killer.
