While the Internet is a relatively new technology, that has impacted the world, and provided many benefits, it has also had negative ramifications. Individuals unable to control their use are jeopardizing school, employment and relationships. The concept of “Internet Addiction” is used to explain uncontrollable, damaging use of technology. It is characterized as an impulse control disorder, comparable to pathological gambling, because of overlapping diagnostic criteria and symptomatology. Based on these studies, the IAT was constructed to capture the problematic behavior associated with compulsive use of technology, including online porn, internet gambling and compulsive use of online games and social media. The IAT-F is for children and adolescents and completed by an informant who knows the youth well. The IAT-F contains the Parent-Child Internet Addiction Test (PCIAT), a 20-item-questionnaire for adolescents, and theProblematic and Risky Media Use in Children Checklist, an 8-item-checklist for use with children. Both forms may be completed by a parent or other caregiver that knows the youth well. Clinical cut-off scores and severity of addiction qualifiers are provided. The IAT can also be a valuable pre-employment screening device, to detect internet addiction among job candidates, to improve productivity and reduce corporate liability. Based on 20 self-report items, the IAT assesses for the presence of addiction to the Internet, electronic entertainment, social media, and general use of electronic devices, and also measures the severity of addiction, in terms of mild, moderate or severe. What we as teacher educators teach, or think we are teaching, in teacher preparation courses may, or may not, be what prospective teachers are learning about being a teacher and successful teaching and learning for all learners, particularly those students historically underserved. Each of the prospective educators who share their narratives in this volume are striving to become critical educators capable of promoting equitable educational and social opportunities, outcomes, and experiences for all learners. While their journeys are each distinctive and unique to them personally, the teacher candidates who share their narratives in this volume highlight some of the challenges and opportunities they have encountered in teacher preparation courses to learn about the functioning of social structures that sustain society’s existing hierarchies and develop the skills and knowledge requisite to identify, implement, and assess critical learning strategies aimed at challenging inequities and promoting more inclusive forms of education. The main question that guided the thinking behind this book can be stated as follows: "What kind of leadership behavior must executives of technology-driven organizations display to spur performance excellence?" To address this question the authors conducted videotaped interviews of executives from 65 organizations– including General Electric, Qualcomm, The Vanguard Group, and Barclays Global Investors – to identify common behaviors and traits that lead to organizational success. In addition to the interviews, they surveyed the executives’ followers to evaluate the leadership and organizational culture to examine successful executive leadership from multiple reference points. The authors found that displaying outstanding executive leadership doesn't necessarily require a commanding presence, a genius-level IQ, expertise, or even a strong command and control system. At the heart of outstanding strategic leadership was an ability to envision a strategy for taking the raw inputs provided by their environments (e.g., people, technology, ideas, opportunities) and then to weave them into an integrated pattern or system of social, technical and intellectual resources that ultimately produce dramatically higher levels of organizational success factors. The book includes dozens of stories and narratives from the executive leaders to offer readers an in-depth look at what constitutes effective strategy-focused leadership in technology-driven organizations.

Muammar al-Qaddafi led a group of young army officers who overthrew the government of King Idris I in 1961. After the officers seized control, Qadaffi emerged as head of the ruling council. Although he doesn’t hold any title in Libya, it is clear that he is the absolute ruler of the country. Qaddafi brought socialism to Libya by taking over and nationalizing all industries, including the profitable oil industry. He reorganized the government in a way that seemed to give more voice to the people, but he and his close advisers made all important decisions. Dissenters were imprisoned or killed. In the name of promoting Arab unity, Qaddafi supported Arab and other terrorists around the globe. He also sent assassins to kill exiled Libyans who spoke out against him. Still, he spoke out strongly against the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States. In recent years, Qaddafi has opened Libya to foreign investors and agreed to give up his nuclear program. It is not clear whether he has also reduced his firm control of Libyan citizens. After forty years of rule, Qaddafi is still a puzzle to the outside world.

The modern, centralized American state was supposedly born in the Great Depression of the 1930s. Kimberley S. Johnson argues that this conventional wisdom is wrong. Cooperative federalism was not born in a Big Bang, but instead emerged out of power struggles within the nation's major political institutions during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Examining the fifty-two years from the end of Reconstruction to the beginning of the Great Depression, Johnson shows that the "first New Federalism" was created during this era from dozens of policy initiatives enacted by a modernizing Congress. The expansion of national power took the shape of policy instruments that reflected the constraints imposed by the national courts and the Constitution, but that also satisfied emergent policy coalitions of interest groups, local actors, bureaucrats, and members of Congress. Thus, argues Johnson, the New Deal was not a decisive break with the past, but rather a superstructure built on a foundation that emerged during the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era. Her evidence draws on an analysis of 131 national programs enacted between 1877 and 1930, a statistical analysis of these programs, and detailed case studies of three of them: the Federal Highway Act of 1916, the Food and Drug Act of 1906, and the Sheppard-Towner Act of 1921. As this book shows, federalism has played a vital but often underappreciated role in shaping the modern American state.
