Sam Cooper was a rugged southern gentleman from Tupelo, Mississippi. After Sams father died suddenly, Sam and his wife Necee, inherited, the struggling hand-me-down farm. To keep the family farm from bankruptcy, along with his personal finances, Sam went to the North Slope and began working in a remote Inupiat village, as an engineer. Ten years later, he found himself still working in the Eskimo villages and away from a wife, who had begun to feel the sting of loneliness too deep, and was becoming resentful. After a year of working on the Slope and living in the construction camps, Sam developed a double life and personality. Every year Sam promised Necee he would come home and leave the Alaska life behind, never making good on his promises, until it was a little too late. After an encounter with a beautiful Athabascan native girl named Layla, Sams life changed forever. Sam came to Alaska by invitation from his friend, Matt Healey. Matt was a young looking, sixty-year old Project Manager from Miami, Florida, who was married to Amy, a woman he never wanted to marry and had resented all their married life. After thirty-nine years of marriage, Matts secret life on the Slope began to unravel, with plenty of help from the psychotic office manager, Delaney Delingfield, and the only woman Matt ever loved, McKenna Hayes. Delaney Delingfield was trouble with a capital T. Delaney slept with the upper crust of Gold Coast Oil and Gas, and used sexual blackmail to keep her job on the North Slope, where she made plenty of money to keep up her mischievous lifestyle, and evil games. Delaney had no self-esteem, no morals, and no conscience. She made the life of the people she worked with hell. During her first night at Camp Kinsey, in Kaktovik, Delaney met an attractive, racist Eskimo, by the name of Grey Antooguk. Together, their plans and schemes revealed many of the secrets the employees had in the village and in their personal lives. Grey Antooguk was a black, evil cloud over the village of Kaktovik. When Reed Shaw arrived with her husband Colton, the assistant Project Manager from Texas, Grey lost his heart and his mind. Reed was the only white person that Grey Antooguk ever wanted to befriend, and demanded to have. With Delaneys help and spying eyes, together they cooked up a plan for the Eskimo outlaw to have the white woman with hair the color of the sunset. Colton Shaw was the only man on the job that remotely appeared to have any moral character. He brought his wife on all the jobs and was allowed this favor because of his work expertise. Colton made plans for the Kaktovik job to be his last, so he and his wife could have a normal life back in Texas. One night in the village changed these plans forever. Brice Garrett, with his good looks and great smile, played the North Slope adultery field with Amelia Brighton, the new cook at Camp Kinsey, and Lauren Beckett, the Italian payroll clerk. After Brices unfaithful wife Natalie, who lived in Seattle, found out that her husband was a little more than just involved with Amelia, Delaney and a jealous Lauren crushed the two with a malicious hand. Amelia Brighton was a beautiful, petite blonde, who was hired as the new cook at Camp Kinsey. Amelia, with her good looks, belonged anywhere but the "construction adult playground." After a horrific sexual injustice was done to Amelia, Brice became her best friend and lover in camp. It looked like he was going to become her husband until Delaney Delingfield got involved, and changed three peoples lives for the worst. Mark Jones, known as Nevada by his Slope friends and his Saturday night poker buddies, had his fair share of mishaps on the job and in his personal life. The long-standing tradition of baptizing infants suggests that the sacraments plunge our bodies into salvation, so the revelation of God's love in the sacraments addresses the whole person, not the mind alone. In this work, the contemporary Roman Catholic rite of baptism for infants becomes a case study, manifesting the connections between the human body, the ecclesial body, and the Body of Christ. The sacramental life, for children as for adults, is an ongoing journey deeper into the life of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. By examining the church's practice of infant baptism, Kimberly Hope Belcher asks how human beings participate in God's life through the sacraments. Christian sacraments are embodied, cultural rituals performed by and for human beings. At the same time, the sacraments are God's gifts of grace, by which human beings enter into God's own life. In this study, contemporary ritual studies, sacramental theology, and trinitarian theology are used to explore how participation in the sacraments can be an efficacious engagement in God's life of love. Kimberly Hope Belcher is an assistant professor of theology at Saint John's University, where she teaches sacramental theology and ritual studies. She is a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy and writes for the liturgical blog Pray Tell.

Why are so many American social programs delegated to private actors? And what are the consequences for efficiency, accountability, and the well-being of beneficiaries? The Delegated Welfare State examines the development of the American welfare state through the lens of delegation: how policymakers have avoided direct governmental provision of benefits and services, turning to non-state actors for the governance of social programs. Utilizing case studies of Medicare and the 2009-10 health care reform, Morgan and Campbell argue that the prevalence of delegated governance reflects the powerful role of interest groups in American politics, the dominance of Congress in social policymaking, and deep contradictions in American public opinion. Americans want both social programs and small government, leaving policy makers in a bind. Contracting out public programs to non-state actors masks the role of the state and enlists private allies who push for passage. Although delegated governance has been politically expedient, enabling the growth of government programs in an anti-government political climate, it raises questions about fraud, abuse, administrative effectiveness, and accountability. In probing both the causes and consequences of delegated governance, The Delegated Welfare State offers a novel interpretation of both American social welfare politics and the nature of the American state.

In Best Practice Kimberly Chong provides an ethnography of a global management consultancy that has been hired by Chinese companies, including Chinese state-owned enterprises. She shows how consulting emerges as a crucial site for considering how corporate organization, employee performance, business ethics, and labor have been transformed under financialization. To date financialization has been examined using top-down approaches that portray the rise of finance as a new logic of economic accumulation. Best Practice, by contrast, focuses on the everyday practices and narratives through which companies become financialized. Effective management consultants, Chong finds, incorporate local workplace norms and assert their expertise in the particular terms of China's national project of modernization, while at the same time framing their work in terms of global “best practices.” Providing insight into how global management consultancies refashion Chinese state-owned enterprises in preparation for stock market flotation, Chong demonstrates both the dynamic, fragmented character of financialization and the ways in which Chinese state capitalism enables this process.

How these contradictory values have been reconciled, not always successfully, is what Kimberly K. Smith sets out to explain in The Conservation Constitution—a book that brings to light the roots of contemporary constitutional conflict over environmental policy. In the mid-nineteenth century, most Progressive Era conservation policies would have been considered unconstitutional. Smith traces how, between 1870 and 1930, the conservation movement reshaped constitutional doctrine to its purpose—how, specifically, courts and lawyers worked to expand government authority to manage wildlife, forest and water resources, and pollution. Her work, which highlights a number of important Supreme Court decisions often overlooked in accounts of this period, brings the history of environmental management more fully into the story of the US Constitution. At the same time, illuminating the doctrinal innovation in the Progressives’ efforts, her book reveals the significance of constitutional history to an understanding of the government’s role in environmental management.

But what is the relationship between hands, tactility, and sexuality in Victorian literature? And how do we best interpret what those touches communicate between characters? This volume addresses these questions by asserting a connection between the prevalence of violent, sexually charged touches in eighteenth-century novels such as those by Eliza Haywood, Samuel Richardson, and Frances Burney and growing public concern over handshake etiquette in the nineteenth century evident in works by Jane Austen, the Brontës, George Eliot, Elizabeth Gaskell, Thomas Hardy, Oscar Wilde, and Flora Annie Steel. This book takes an interdisciplinary approach that combines literary analysis with close analyses of paintings, musical compositions, and nonfictional texts, such as etiquette books and scientific treatises, to make a case for the significance of tactility to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century perceptions of selfhood and sexuality. In doing so, it draws attention to the communicative nature of skin-to-skin contact as represented in literature and traces a trajectory of meaning from the forceful grips that violate female characters in eighteenth-century novels to the consensual embraces common in Victorian and neo-Victorian literature.
