He held his breath when the prettiest woman he ever laid eyes on stepped on with him. When she got pushed and he caught her, he knew he had caught a gift. Unable to stop thinking of her made work hard and his interest in dating go down. He could still smell her scent long after he closed the car door and pulled away from the curb. With the help of his cousin Chase and the help from his mother, he realized he could not ignore these feelings he had and that he would stop at nothing to have her.

Guided by the Moon, who has a character and identity of her own, Claire de Lune, remains Ali's constant companion, guiding him and his leadership, not only with soft illumination, but endowing him with the light of reason, judgment, comfort and warmth.

Kimberly Harper explores events in the towns of Monett, Pierce City, Joplin, and Springfield, Missouri, and Harrison, Arkansas, to show how post–Civil War vigilantism, an established tradition of extralegal violence, and the rapid political, economic, and social change of the New South era happened independently but were also part of a larger, interconnected regional experience. Even though some whites, especially in Joplin and Springfield, tried to stop the violence and bring the lynchers to justice, many African Americans fled the Ozarks, leaving only a resilient few behind and forever changing the racial composition of the region.
