His father and mother both born in Greek cities of Asia Minor escaped the Turkish brutality and the Hellenic Holocaust of 1916 to 1922. They came to Greece in 1922 and survived the difficult and inhumane conditions of the refugee settlements. There they met, were married some time in 1935, and after losing their first child to poverty and conditions unfit to human dignity, they brought to this world in 1937 the author of this book, who was followed by seven other children. The author and five of the siblings are still alive today.

Having been involved in sorting out and studying Korean place names for 18 years, I feel regretful in my heart. The Hanja transcriptions of pure Korean place names, which were written in old maps and geography books, were organized according to how they sounded. At some point I realized that the Hanja transcriptions were distorted versions of the names that were really used. However, as I had to sort out so many names in a short period of time, I could not even think of fixing the issues and always felt regretful in a corner of my mind. Writing this book is my small struggle to relieve that regretful feeling, at least a little.

Paradoxically, nineteenth-century Russia was also consumed with a passion for spiritualist activities such as table-rappings, seances of spirit communication, and materialization of the 'spirits.' Ghostly Paradoxes examines the surprising relationship between spiritualist beliefs and practices and the positivist mindset of the Russian Age of Realism (1850-80) to demonstrate the ways in which the two disparate movements influenced each other. Foregrounding the important role that nineteenth-century spiritualism played in the period's aesthetic, ideological, and epistemological debates, Ilya Vinitsky challenges literary scholars who have considered spiritualism to be archaic and peripheral to other cultural issues of the time. Ghostly Paradoxes is an innovative work of literary scholarship that traces the reactions of Russia's major realist authors to spiritualist events and doctrines and demonstrates that both movements can be understood only when examined together.

This book is the first comprehensive study of Yijing (Book of Changes) commentary during the Northern Song period, showing how it reflects a coming to terms with major political and social changes. Seen as a transitional period in China's history, the Northern Song (960–1127) is often described as the midpoint in the Tang-Song transition or as the beginning of Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism. Challenging this traditional view, Tze-ki Hon demonstrates the complexity of the Northern Song by breaking it into three periods characterized by, alternately, the reestablishment of civil governance, large-scale reforms, and a descent into factional rivalry. To illustrate the distinct characteristics of these three periods, Hon compares commentaries by Hu Yuan, Zhang Zai, and Cheng Yi with five other Yijing commentaries, highlighting the broad parameters, as well as the specific content, of an extremely important world of discourse—the debate on literati activism. These differing views on the literati's role in civil governance prove how lively, diverse, and intense Northern Song intellectual life was, while also reminding us how important it is to understand the history of the period on its own terms.
