It is a skill that is applicable to any academic discipline, including history. Students should be encouraged to look up words that they do not know when they encounter them while reading. Students will not do formal vocabulary activities in this course, but a glossary has been provided for words that the students may find difficult or unfamiliar in the assigned reading. Upon encountering an unknown word, the student should consult the glossary provided at the back of the teacher guide and/or a dictionary. Students should also be aware that many of these words have multiple meanings. It is important that students learn to use the context of these words in the text to help understand their meanings. Students are encouraged to maintain a list of these words and review them periodically throughout the course. Review could include writing the words and their definitions on index cards to use as flashcards, having students create their own dictionaries, or using the words in sentences. This component of the course is entirely optional, however, and not built into the schedule. Using Vintage Books: One of the books included in this course, Adventures in Missionary Heroism, was originally published in the early 1900s. There is real value in reading vintage books like this one. These historical texts not only provide us with information but also insight into the attitudes and perceptions of people from that time. It is important to remember that vintage books can express attitudes and use terminology that is no longer considered appropriate. When students come across these moments in vintage books, it is the perfect opportunity for them to have a discussion with their teacher about this material. Teachers and students can use this opportunity to analyze the differences in attitudes between now and then, as well as to review Biblical principles regarding issues like racism. These conversations will provide students a context for understanding the attitudes expressed in the text, as well as help them develop their own skills of discernment and critical thinking when it comes to materials they are reading.

But just how does Whitechapelâs notorious murderer fit in with the facts surrounding the case? Contentious then as it still is today, is it reasonable to assume Frances Colesâ death proved to be the last in the Ripperâs reign of terror? Or was he long gone from Whitechapelâs streets by the time of her murder? Prokofiev and Soviet Film

Sound film captivated Sergey Prokofiev during the final two decades of his life: he considered composing for nearly two dozen pictures, eventually undertaking eight of them, all Soviet productions. Hollywood luminaries such as Gloria Swanson tempted him with commissions, and arguably more people heard his film music than his efforts in all other genres combined. Films for which Prokofiev composed, in particular those of Sergey Eisenstein, are now classics of world cinema. Drawing on newly available sources, Composing for the Red Screen examines - for the first time - the full extent of this prodigious cinematic career. Author Kevin Bartig examines how Prokofiev's film music derived from a self-imposed challenge: to compose "serious" music for a broad audience. The picture that emerges is of a composer seeking an individual film-music voice, shunning Hollywood models and objecting to his Soviet colleagues' ideologically expedient film songs. Looking at Prokofiev's film music as a whole - with well-known blockbusters like Alexander Nevsky considered alongside more obscure or aborted projects - reveals that there were multiple solutions to the challenge, each with varying degrees of success. Prokofiev carefully balanced his own populist agenda, the perceived aesthetic demands of the films themselves, and, later on, Soviet bureaucratic demands for accessibility.

Many central banks in emerging and advanced economies have adopted an inflation-forecast targeting (IFT) approach to monetary policy, in order to successfully establish a stable, low-inflation environment. To support policy making, each has developed a structured system of forecasting and policy analysis appropriate to its needs. A common component is a model-based forecast with an endogenous policy interest rate path. The approach is characterized, among other things, by transparent communications—some IFT central banks go so far as to publish their policy interest rate projection. Some elements of this regime, although a work still in progress, are worthy of consideration by central banks that have not yet officially adopted full-fledged inflation targeting.

As the rivalry between the US and China enters a dangerous new phase, reaffirming the politics of anti-imperialism is a task more important than ever. From trade wars and pandemic politics to rioting workers, intercontinental balloons, and battles over TikTok, the US media tends to present contemporary China—when it’s discussed at all—in sensationalist terms. This portrayal has only intensified as China’s relationship with the United States has grown increasingly hostile. Whether in the form of overtly racist rhetoric and aggressive trade actions, or the more buttoned down but equally antagonistic efforts to oppose Chinese interests abroad, the US has made clear that it has no interest in giving up its position as global hegemon. This seemingly endless cycle of nationalism, jingoism, and reactionary politics on both sides of the Pacific suggests a downward spiral that could plausibly result in catastrophic military confrontation. Against Imperialism forcefully makes the case that workers and socially marginalized people in both the US and China must oppose our rulers’ claims that they have our best interests in mind as they ratchet up their rivalry. Rather, if we’re to avert nuclear calamity, we must oppose imperialism in all its forms, and regardless of its source and rhetoric. Through snapshots of China’s growing social movements—from its labor struggles to feminist campaigns, and more—Lin, Liu, Friedman, and Smith provide some of the building blocks we’ll need to construct a movement that centers international solidarity across borders.

Kevin sat quietly in the two-man cell. His new cellmate was trying to whip up support among his inmate friends to "do something" about his new cellmate-me. This was definitely not going well. I could almost "feel" an assault or a knife attack coming. I made a decision. If I was going to die in prison, then I would take myself out rather than let some self-righteous, low-brow punk(s) do it. I could fight-the Army had trained me well-but how many would come at me? Would there be weapons? I quietly wrote a letter home and explained what I was going to do. After that, I placed the thirty-day supply of Atenolol in my pocket. Atenolol controls blood pressure by slowing your heart rate. If things went badly, I would take all of them at once- hopefully stopping my heart with a minimum of pain. I also spoke silently with God. I told Him, "If I have to do this, please don't send me to hell. I sincerely believe Lord that the guilt of this sin should be given to this animal, Doherty." This event was survived. There was a long road ahead. From false accusation to trial to false imprisonment then probation, this is a story of defeat and survival that nothing could prepare a person for.

The Fed has taken several steps towards strengthening its monetary framework over the past several years. Those steps have supported the Fed’s efforts to stimulate the economy through forward guidance despite being constrained by having policy rates at zero. We show that an optimal control approach to monetary policy, which includes the publication of a baseline forecast and a description of the uncertainties around that outlook, combined with an improvement in the Fed’s communications toolkit, could further enhance the effectiveness of Fed policy. In the current conjuncture, such a risk management approach to monetary policy would result in both a later liftoff of policy rates and a modest, but planned, overshooting of inflation.

A myriad of models are available to guide practice before, during, and following disasters. As emphasized in this book, we value the role of research in informing our assessment, education, and intervention efforts in this area. Keeping an eye on those elements that have research backing certainly assists with quality control generally. However, more specifically, we also stress the idea that there is evidence to support a role for hope and positive expectations in the motivation and engagement process. In addition, the more that people, including youth and adults, actively participate in efforts designed to help, the more benefits they tend to receive. The role of research in providing that initial hope and inspiring more active engagement with internal and external resources before, during, and after a disaster is part of the foundation of our practice in this area. In fact, in the clinical psychology training program directed by the senior author, the idea that we attempt to inculcate with our trainees is the idea of “hope and engagement on an evidence-based foundation.” Consequently, we do advocate for models of practice that have identified “active ingredients” that are included: those particularly identified through controlled evaluation research. However, it is also the case that a number of risk and protective factors identified through a number of studies (e.g., see Chapter 2) have as yet to be systematically included.
