Yet poems about pets, as well as attendant issues such as breeding and overpopulation, have not received the kind of critical analysis devoted to fictional works and short stories. This book explores the theory and practice of Victorian liberal parenting by focusing on the life and writings of John Morley, one of Britain’s premier intellectuals and politicians. Reading Morley’s published works—much of which explicitly or implicitly addresses this relationship—with and against other writings of the period, and in the context of formative circumstances in his own life, it explores how living one’s life as a liberal extended to parenting. Although Victorian liberalism is currently undergoing reappraisal by scholars in the disciplines of literature and history, only a handful of studies have addressed its implications for intimate personal relations. None have considered the relationship of parent and child. Four of the chapters document how John Morley was parented and how he defined himself as a parent, based on newly available archival materials. Two other chapters analyze his many writings on or concerned with parenting and parenthood.

This book is a genre-breaking response to the literature on study abroad. It stakes claim to an uncharted space between reflective pedagogy, public history studies, and investigations into dark tourism. Drawing on the author’s experience of teaching short-term summer programs and courses in London between 2011 and 2018 that focused wholly or in part on the Whitechapel murders of 1888, the book analyzes experiential learning in the study abroad context. The book is informed by the instructor’s reflections; students’ informal essays and anonymous evaluations; and the scholarship of teaching and learning. It begins by situating programs and courses on the Whitechapel murders in the context of debates about overseas and experiential learning. It then proceeds to discuss the constraints to and possibilities for devising study abroad programs to include graduate students in humanistic disciplines; assignments and classroom activities utilized, including those with a reenactment component; the ethical complexities of teaching at dark sites; and the pedagogical implications of learning about Jack the Ripper in an age of terror. It concludes with reflections on the differences between study abroad programs and courses in cultivating students’ global-mindedness.

Resisting the common reduction of the exception to a political or ethical concept, O'Farrell argues that the exception for Bonhoeffer is an extraordinary moment in history that disarms persons, impinging on one's understanding of politics and ethics. Through a wide engagement with the Bonhoeffer corpus, this book claims that this leads to distinctive narrations of key concepts in Bonhoeffer's corpus: responsibility, the free venture, simple obedience, and action beyond the law. It also offers a different portrait of Bonhoeffer to contemporary narrations. The Bonhoeffer that emerges is neither a Niebuhrian realist, a pacifist, or a religious fanatic, but one who is impelled to act apart from the law without this action becoming arbitrary. This Bonhoeffer provides a hopeful political witness that seeks a world beyond the conflicts and divisions of this age.

Although many editors place demands on their authors, these examples invite special scholarly attention given the power imbalance between white editors and publishers and African American authors.
