For decades, political observers and pundits have characterized the Islamic Republic of Iran as an ideologically rigid state on the verge of collapse, exclusively connected to a narrow social base. In A Social Revolution, Kevan Harris convincingly demonstrates how they are wrong. Previous studies ignore the forceful consequences of three decades of social change following the 1979 revolution. Today, more people in the country are connected to welfare and social policy institutions than to any other form of state organization. In fact, much of Iran’s current political turbulence is the result of the success of these social welfare programs, which have created newly educated and mobilized social classes advocating for change. Based on extensive fieldwork conducted in Iran, Harris shows how the revolutionary regime endured through the expansion of health, education, and aid programs that have both embedded the state in everyday life and empowered its challengers. This focus on the social policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran opens a new line of inquiry into the study of welfare states in countries where they are often overlooked or ignored.

Awaken the bard within in this inspiring journey into your creative potential. Expanding upon the foundation of The Bardic Handbook, this volume explores the transformations the bardic initiate must go through to become a fully-fledged Bard. This originally took 12 years of study in the Bardic Colleges - but communities need bards right now, bringing healing and hope with their words and music and so the training process is accelerated over 12 months, echoing the 12 years of Taliesin's journey from Gwion Bach to the Shining Brow. Extracts from the author's notebooks and journals over 20 years illustrate his own journey - showing how this ancient wisdom has been gleaned and validated by powerful personal experience. The Way of Awen is a way of living creatively.
Sachleben (political science, Western New England College) and Yenerall (political science, Clarion U.) hope to "tap into the appeal of movies and television" in order to raise interest in politics and illuminate features of contemporary political debates. Topically arranging their material into chapters covering liberal and alternative ideologies, the American presidency, civil rights and social justice, campaigns and elections, and war, the authors typically offer brief discussion of the broad outlines of their topic, summarize some plots or plot points of movie or television show, and then point towards its political relevance. Like all great cities, Ashevilles story is one of people, not institutions or industries. For more than two centuries, deep in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, extraordinary women and men have created a truly unique American city. Legendary Locals of Asheville tells the stories of the people who founded, built, and rebuilt Asheville. From the first woman elected to state office in the South, who won her primary before women had the right to vote, to the grandson of a famed railroad magnate who built a 250-room chateau that became the largest home in America, to the entrepreneur who helped ignite the citys renaissance when he risked opening an art gallery downtown when most of it was still boarded up, Ashevillians are an amazing lot. Likewise, there are stories of extraordinary groups like the renowned faculty of an experimental college that redefined the American arts or the brave high school students who joined together to fight segregation. Their stories are as touching and fascinating as they are varied.

Wonderful Tonight is set against a background of rural Norfolk during the Thatcherite years and deliberately follows a pivotal year in the life of Stuart Harvey who is essentially ‘Mr. Average’ and father of two. Stuart is however considered an above average teacher who due to accumulated frustrations within his profession undergoes a gradual epiphany and despite the economic harshness of the times decides to give up the relative safety of his teaching career. The first part of the novel which is deliberately written in an ‘easy-read’ and hopefully humorous style charts Stuarts growing disillusion with the education system and onto the realization that despite everything indicating otherwise, he wants to follow his long-suppressed desire to play the guitar in a band. The novel then builds through the establishment of the band and onto their first successful gig using ‘Clem’, Stuart’s guitar-playing alter-ego to comment on the experience. Harsh economic reality begins to dawn on Stuart and after a disastrous gig in rural Lincolnshire, which touches on his previous world, the band effectively disintegrates leaving Stuart adrift in the wreckage of his decision to quit teaching. The second part of the novel reflects the darker part of the journey as he fails to find employment and also fails to appreciate his wife's relative career success. Within this family vacuum a potential problem with Stuart's eldest daughter goes unnoticed and Stuart is forced to reflect on his contribution to the family’s predicament as it begins to degenerate towards dysfunction. A chance meeting leads to Stuart’s life resuming some semblance of normality and effectively saves his family and thus his journey ends with a sense of optimism. Wonderful Tonight is named after an Eric Clapton track popular on set lists of the time and usually played as a final number. A glossary of terms is included for the benefit of those who did not live through and experience the lifestyle of these times. “A riveting good read in every sense” The South Norfolk magazine for light engineering brackets “The creation of Clem as a subjugated and subliminal ultra-ego (or id?) is a literary masterpiece but possibly indicates the schizophrenic tendencies of the author himself.” The Leighton Buzzard Journal of Psycho-therapy
Fairport Convention are a great British institution – or, at least, they should be. For more than 50 years they have helped to keep traditional music alive and kicking by injecting it with a healthy dose of electric rock ’n’ roll. Their finest albums – including What We Did On Our Holidays and Liege And Lief – are landmarks is the development of British music. In this exhaustive and illuminating book, Kevan Furbank looks at all the studio albums in detail – from their uncertain debut in 1968 to their most recent release, celebrating half a century of music-making. He chronicles the stories behind each recording, touching on the highs and lows, the successes and tragedies, the pleasure and pain, and examines the songwriting, arrangements and traditions that inspired each track. In doing so, he also looks at the contributions made by the many great musicians who have passed through Fairport’s ‘revolving-door’ line-ups, including guitar wizard Richard Thompson, angel-voiced Sandy Denny, demon fiddler Dave Swarbrick and the ‘guv’nor’ of British folk-rock, Ashley Hutchings. Fairport Convention’s musical story is as dramatic as any soap opera. If you have never heard any Fairport this book is the perfect introduction. If you have, you will want to go back and revisit the music this band has made over the last 50 years. Because, in the words of Richard Thompson, it all comes round again.
