Illuminates how white American Protestant women embraced a racially specific version of social inclusiveness that centered themselves as the norm Amidst the global instability of the early twentieth century, white Christian American women embraced the idea of an “empire of Christ” that was racially diverse, but which they believed they were uniquely qualified to manage. America’s burgeoning power, combined with women’s rising roles within the church, led to white Protestant women adopting a feminism rooted in religion and imperialism. Gale L. Kenny examines this Christian imperial feminism from the women’s missionary movement to create a Christian world order. She shows that this Christian imperial feminism marked a break from an earlier Protestant world view that focused on moral and racial purity and in which interactions among races were inconceivable. This new approach actually prioritized issues like civil rights and racial integration, as well as the uplift of women, though the racially diverse world Christianity it aspired to was still to be rigidly hierarchically ordered, with white women retaining a privileged place as guardians. In exposing these dynamics, this book departs from recent scholarship on white evangelical nationalism to focus on the racial politics of white religious liberalism. Christian Imperial Feminism adds a necessary layer to our understanding of religion, gender, and empire.

Every day people come together to make music. Whether amateur or professional, young or old, jazz enthusiasts or rock stars, what is common to all of these musical groups is the potential to create communities of musical practice (CoMP). Such communities are created through practices: ways of engaging, rules, membership, roles, identities and learning that is both shared through collective musical endeavour and situated within certain sociocultural contexts. Ailbhe Kenny investigates CoMP as a rich model for community engagement, musical participation and transformation in music education. This book is the first to produce a valid and reliable in-depth study of music communities using a community of practice (CoP) framework - in this case focusing on the social process of musical learning. Employing case study research within Ireland, three illustrations from particular sociocultural, genre-specific, economic and geographical contexts are examined: an adult amateur jazz ensemble, a youth choir, and an online Irish traditional music web platform. Each case is analysed as a distinct community and phenomenon offering sharpened understandings of each sub-culture with specific findings presented for each community.

In Search of Western Movie Sites is a compilation of 64 articles written for the bi-monthly newsletter Western Clippings by Carlo Gaberscek and Kenny Stier. They are profoundly convinced of the fundamental importance of landscapes and natural exteriors in westerns. These articles are listed regionally, starting with the Southwestern states (Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada), progressing to California, the Northwest, Midwest, and Southern states, followed by Canada, and finishing with Mexico. They focus on the making of both A and B-westerns in a single state or a specific area of a state, and contain selected filmographies and detailed information on the locations. They envision a vast atlas of western cinema, a map of both real and imagined places constructed by Hollywood. This book, which includes over 200 stills and photos taken on location, is a guide to thousands of western film locations.
AFTER A MANDATED RETIREMENT, a famous newspaper Editor-in Chief, Edward Grant grows tired of sleeping-in, and of fly-fishing most every day. He longs for his life’s work of writing and printing the news. Several months after retirement he decides to buy a closed newspaper business in a small rural community. It would be something to do that was both meaningful and entertaining. HE SOON DISCOVERS the two previous operators of the newspaper business were mysteriously murdered. As he investigates the two deaths, he uncovers the files collected by the two former operators of a criminal syndicate; but Ed will not approach the police, having been warned not to trust the uniform police officers in that small town. HE THEN REACHES OUT to his estranged daughter, who was once a federal prosecutor, now in private practice. The daughter––an only child, blames Ed––her father for her mother’s death, though the illness was a non-curable form of cancer. She ignores her father’s requests for help, not realizing his plea for help is truly to save his life, and not a disguised attempt to reconnect with her. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, Ed Grant’s daughter Jill, is notified of his death by investigators who tell her they believe is the work of the same killers who murdered the two former newspaper operators. JILL VOWS TO DO whatever is necessary to find her father’s killers and bring them to justice: as it is the only way of obtaining a form of self-forgiveness. She meets with resistance and conflict, two of which begins with strong competition between her intentions, a judge and the Chief of Police, before an unimaginable turn of events brings two together, to form a partnership––But will she live to make it a lasting one?
