My wife, Cindy, and I wanted little more than to build a future and provide families of economic disadvantage the opportunity to experience a small part of 'the American dream.' Little did we know that our sincere, honorable intentions would be met with a fear and distrust, exemplifying the phrase 'not in my backyard.' After seeing hardworking low-income families living in poor conditions in bad neighborhoods, the Kuhrs had one dreama "they wanted to create a manufactured home development that would allow these families the chance to own a home they could afford while raising their children in a safe environment. After searching many small towns and being met with opposition, they found hope in Lily White Janesville, Iowa. Two years after their proposal, two city-council members voted against the rezoning needed to move ahead with the project. Finding Racism and Bigotry in Small-town Iowa, the Kuhrs took their case to the United States Department of Justice. This is their story, a story fully documented to remind Americans that what is popular is not always right, a story that will inspire all who read it to be 'change makers' who stand up against injustice to ensure everyone has a chance to have the American dream.
