Late in his career, Claude Monet returned to London to paint the fog that had entranced him years before. The resulting sequence of pictures represents some of the fascination that French painters felt for Britain. Similarly, many British collectors and young painters embraced and were influenced by the work of the French Impressionists. This book describes the activities of the French Impressionist painters on their visits to Britain, considers the dissemination of Impressionist painting through British dealers and collectors, explores the response of artists from Britain and Ireland to the Impressionist movement, and sets all of these against the backdrop of late Victorian and Edwardian Britain. McConkey and Robins describe the work of Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, and other Impressionists working in London, showing how this art influenced the community of young British painters disenchanted with British art schools and art exhibiting standards. The authors investigate the role played by two innovative painters who were American expatriates, James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent. And they explain how such artists as William Orpen, George Clausen, Stanhope Forbes, Henry La Thangue, Walter Sickert, and Philip Wilson Steer sought out new and radical approaches to picture making, formed new secessionist art societies, and articulated new concepts of the role of art, rejecting historical pageants and fashionable aestheticism and focusing on modern rural and urban conditions. The book is the catalogue of an exhibition that will be at the Barbican Art Gallery in London from January to March 1995, and then move to Dublin.

This volume contains a collection of papers delivered by the partici pants at the second Conference on Computation and Control held at Mon tana State University in Bozeman, Montana from August 1-7, 1990. The conference, as well as this proceedings, attests to the vitality and cohesion between the control theorist and the numerical analyst that was adver tised by the first Conference on Computation and Control in 1988. The proceedings of that initial conference was published by Birkhiiuser Boston as the first volume of this same series entitled Computation and Control, Proceedings of the Bozeman Conference, Bozeman, Montana, 1988. Control theory and numerical analysis are both, by their very nature, interdisciplinary subjects as evidenced by their interaction with other fields of mathematics and engineering. While it is clear that new control or es timation algorithms and new feedback design methodologies will need to be implemented computationally, it is likewise clear that new problems in computational mathematics arise when implementing a new generation of control algorithms. For these reasons, computational mathematics is mov ing to the forefront in recent developments in modern control theory and conversely control theory and its applications continue to be a fertile area for computationalists. This volume contains a representative cross section of the interdisciplinary blend of analytic and numerical techniques that of ten occur between advanced control design and practical numerical solution of lumped and distributed parameter systems.

This book brings together the principles and practices of health care for incarcerated populations. It references national standards and legal precedents and cites recognized experts and authorities. It describes serious mistakes that have occurred and discusses strategies for the future. The chapters in this book focus on four specific branches of health care services: mental health, infectious disease, dentistry, and addiction rehabilitation. To deliver effective health care in corrections, including prisons, jails, and juvenile facilities, the directors of these facilities and the health care staff need to understand not only the clinical aspects of their patients but their special needs. Those funding or planning for these programs must consider the needs of those special groups who are incarcerated. They include: members of often-underserved groups, including women, the elderly, minorities, and juveniles. Additional ways these groups and others in the prison environment are underserved include in their treatment for infectious diseases, dental health issues, and mental health, as well as for substance abuse problems. The author who has practical hands-on experience with correctional health care suggests what types of environments lead to positive outcomes and offers concrete and often cost-effective suggestions. One of the surprising suggestions is to encourage exercise programs as a cost-effective method to provide increased good health and to keep the peace.
