It was a year packed with unsettling events. The Panic of 1857 closed every bank in New York City, ruined thousands of businesses, and caused widespread unemployment among industrial workers. The Mormons in Utah Territory threatened rebellion when federal troops approached with a non-Mormon governor to replace Brigham Young. The Supreme Court outraged northern Republicans and abolitionists with the Dred Scott decision ("a breathtaking example of judicial activism"). In this ambitious book, Kenneth Wheeler revises our understanding of the nineteenth-century American Midwest by reconsidering an institution that was pivotal in its making—the small college. During the antebellum decades, Americans built a remarkable number of colleges in the Midwest that would help cultivate their regional identity. Through higher education, the values of people living north and west of the Ohio River formed the basis of a new Midwestern culture. Cultivating Regionalism shows how college founders built robust institutions of higher learning in this socially and ethnically diverse milieu. Contrary to conventional wisdom, these colleges were much different than their counterparts in the East and South—not derivative of them as many historians suggest. Manual labor programs, for instance, nurtured a Midwestern zeal for connecting mind and body. And the coeducation of men and women at these schools exploded gender norms throughout the region. Students emerging from these colleges would ultimately shape the ethos of the Progressive era and in large numbers take up scientific investigation as an expression of their egalitarian, production-oriented training. Having been born and raised on the Missouri River at Atchison, Kansas, and having the ghosts of the Civil War about me constantly, I have been passionately interested in the Civil War as long as I can remember. The Victorian and antebellum homes with servant quarters still behind them, the wooded bluffs and caves where escaped slaves were hidden, and the mystique of the Missouri River area itself have maintained this feeling of the war for me. My mothers immediate family was from the Missouri River bottoms on the Missouri side and my fathers immediate family was from rural Atchison on the Kansas side. From my incomplete and somewhat misinformed family and formal history education, I assumed for most of my life that my mothers family was Confederate in its leanings and that my fathers family was Union. I was unaware that the town and countys namesake, Sen. David Rice Atchison, was from Missouri and had much Pro-Slavery activity. No effort has ever been made to change the towns name since the war. No Confederate tie to him was taught in any of my classes in school.

This book covers the history of for-profit institutions for the treatment of drug and alcohol habits which were established prior to the Repeal of Prohibition, as well as a number of miscellaneous entities such as mail-order opium cures. These include the famous Charles B. Towns Hospital and its notorious belladonna cure. Although many people know that Alcoholics Anonymous founder Bill Wilson was treated with the belladonna cure at the Charles B. Towns Hospital, few are aware that Towns was an insurance salesman with an eighth grade education and no medical training who lied about inventing an addiction cure that he got from someone else, that Towns had also been a stockbroker who was convicted of grand larceny after embezzling money for his clients, and that Towns only decided to make a buck in the addiction cure business after being banned from stock trading. Furthermore, in the 1910s, Towns proposed that state government should force drug addicts to take his cure against their wills, and that death camps should be built to exterminate anyone who relapsed after taking his cure. This book also tells the story of Harry Hubbell Kane, who founded the De Quincey Home for the cure of drug addicts in 1881. After the De Quincey Home failed in 1883, Kane invented and marketed a notorious patent medicine named Scotch Oats Essence. Scotch Oats Essence was comprised of one third alcohol and each ounce contained about a half a grain of morphine. It seems that Kane had decided that if he couldn't make money by curing drug addicts, he could make a lot of money by creating them. These are only two of hundreds of addiction treatment facilities which existed prior to the founding of AA: some good, some bad, and some indifferent. These stories and many more can be found in this book.
Schoenberg is often viewed as an isolated composer who was ill-at-ease in exile. In this book Kenneth H. Marcus shows that in fact Schoenberg's connections to Hollywood ran deep, and most of the composer's exile compositions had some connection to the cultural and intellectual environment in which he found himself. He was friends with numerous successful film industry figures, including George Gershwin, Oscar Levant, David Raksin and Alfred Newman, and each contributed to the composer's life and work in different ways: helping him to obtain students, making recordings of his music, and arranging commissions. While teaching at both the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles, Schoenberg was able to bridge two utterly different worlds: the film industry and the academy. Marcus shows that alongside Schoenberg's vital impact upon Southern California Modernism through his pedagogy, compositions and texts, he also taught students who became central to American musical modernism, including John Cage and Lou Harrison.

Drinnons of Mulberry Gap author, Kenneth C. Drinnon, decided a few years ago to begin writing a permanent record of the results of his several years collecting and compiling information on his Drinnon ancestors, which he traced back nine generations to Walter Drinnon/Drinnen who came from County Antrim, Ireland. He also compiled a family tree on Family Tree Maker and uploaded to FTMs composite tree several years ago. Drinnons of Mulberry Gap was originally self-published in 2001 on a subscription basis in both hard and soft back covers at the urging of a few family members. This new publication seeks to satisfy the desires of others who have requested copies. Although his family name is spelled D-r-i-n-n-o-n, his research, which goes back to the early 1700s, finds that D-r-i-n-n-e-n was the most prominent spelling in records of early ancestors. These early records used other spellings, namely: D-r-e-n-i-n-g, D-r-e-n-n-i-n-g, and D-r-e-n-n-o-n. But the D-r-i-n-n-o-n spelling was the most prominent of the 1800s Hawkins/Hancock County, Tennessee census records. It appears that early ancestors changed the spelling upon migrating to Hawkins County around the turn of the eighteenth century, on land that eventually became Hancock County. Thomas J. Drinnon Sr. was the founder of the original Drinnon family to settle at Mulberry Gap, Hancock County, Tennessee. And the book is primarily about him and his wife, Rutha Johns, and their descendants who lived there for a century. However, it is appropriate and beneficial for the reader to have the included information on Thomass ancestors, beginning with Walter Drinnon who settled in the Colonies sometime in the 1730s and continuing down through the ensuing generations. Kenneth Cleveland Drinnon, a native of Mulberry Gap, Hancock County, Tennessee, was born in Lee County, Virginia, on November 30, 1924, to Glenn B. and Willie Mae Overton Drinnon. He attended Mulberry Gap Elementary School and graduated at age seventeen from Hancock County High School at Sneedville, Tennessee, in 1942. Following his United States Army Air Force service, he attended Lincoln Memorial University for two years and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority in the design of electric powergenerating plants for thirty-two years and became a licensed engineer in Tennessee. In November 2011, Drinnon self-published his USAAF memoir, Wings of Tru Love via Xlibris. He married Janis Bolton while attending Lincoln Memorial University and had one daughter, Dena Daryl Drinnon, who married David E. Foulk and had three children, Bethany, Jonathan, and Julia.
