Ken Venturi was a promising young golfer from California with numerous amateur titles when he took of four-stroke lead into the final day of the 1956 Masters. Venturi's three-day ride had riveted the golf world because no amateur had ever won this prestigious event. Venturi, however, collapsed, finishing one stroke behind the winner. The press labeled him a choke--a moniker that stuck. Just when it looked as though a once promising career would be wasted, something amazing happened: Ken Venturi won the 1964 U.S. Open, stunning the golfing establishment and becoming the big story of the 1964 season Sadly, Venturi's comeback was short lived. He suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome, which ended his playing career and sent him into a career in which he would thrive: broadcasting. Venturi joined CBS and broadcast golf for 34 years--the longest television career in golf history--coming to be known as the Walter Cronkite of the game. Getting Up & Down is Ken Venturi's story in his own words. It includes an honest and compelling recap of his life and incisive and searing commentary on the game he loves and those who play it, including sections on his longtime friendships with giants such as Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, and Gene Sarazen--and his frosty relationship with Arnold Palmer.

Join a fellow traveler on a walkabout through Paris and London, and then travel with him across England, Scotland and Wales. After those walkabouts, accompany him as he journeys across America and follows the equator to Australia. Finally, wander with him along the corridors of modern and postmodern philosophy, and as he travels with old and new Philosophes, who all voiced an opinion as regards this travel book. It is a book that people won't buy, won't read and won't praise. Mark Twain After reading only a few pages, I gave up the study of philosophy forever. Voltaire I cannot look upon the book without shedding tears. Bertrand Russell If I could only make a travel book like that, I would be perfectly willing to die-even anxious. John Dewey I have seen a great many travel books in my time, but none that this one reminds me of. Will Durant This travel book is one-third fabrication, one-third prevarication and one-third barefaced lies. However, the rest of the book is the unadulterated truth. Dr. Morris A. Nussbaum

Last Landscapes is an exploration of the cult and celebration of death, loss and memory. It traces the history and design of burial places throughout Europe and the USA, ranging from the picturesque tradition of the village churchyard to tightly packed "cities of the dead", such as the Jewish Cemetery in Prague and Père Lachaise in Paris. Other landscapes that feature in this book include the war cemeteries of northern France, Viking burial islands in central Sweden, Etruscan tombs and early Christian catacombs in Italy, the 17th-century Portuguese–Jewish cemetery "Beth Haim" at Ouderkerk in the Netherlands, Forest Lawns in California, Derek Jarman’s garden in Kent and the Stockholm Woodland Cemetery. It is a fact that architecture "began with the tomb", yet, as Ken Worpole shows us in Last Landscapes, many historic cemeteries have been demolished or abandoned in recent times (notably the case with Jewish cemeteries in Eastern Europe), and there has been an increasing loss of inscription and memorialization in the modern urban cemetery. Too often cemeteries today are both poorly designed and physically and culturally marginalized. Worse, cremation denies a full architectural response to the mystery and solemnity of death. The author explores how modes of disposal – burial, cremation, inhumation in mausoleums and wall tombs – vary across Europe and North America, according to religious and other cultural influences. And Last Landscapes raises profound questions as to how, in an age of mass cremation, architects and landscape designers might create meaningful structures and settings in the absence of a body, since for most of history the human body itself has provided the fundamental structural scale. This evocative book also contemplates other forms of memorialization within modern societies, from sculptures to parks, most notably the extraordinary Duisberg Park, set in a former giant steelworks in Germany’s Ruhr Valley.

New buildings can be designed to be solar oriented, naturally heated and cooled, naturally lit and ventilated, and made with renewable, sustainable materials—no matter the location or climate. In this comprehensive overview of passive solar design, two of America’s solar pioneers give homeowners, architects, designers, and builders the keys to successfully harnessing the sun and maximizing climate resources for heating, cooling, ventilation, and daylighting. Bainbridge and Haggard draw upon examples from their own experiences, as well as those of others, of more than three decades to offer both overarching principles as well as the details and formulas needed to successfully design a more comfortable, healthy, and secure place in which to live, laugh, dance, and be comfortable. Even if the power goes off. Passive Solar Architecture also discusses “greener” and more-sustainable building materials and how to use them, and explores the historical roots of green design that have made possible buildings that produce more energy and other resources than they use.
PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR SAM MARLOWE travels to Paris in search of the Modern world, a valuable object that may or may not have gone missing. On the Right Bank, the philosophical investigator Honor de Balzac leads Sam through the French cultural experience of the last five centuries while instructing him on the art of becoming a raconteur, a teller of tales. Sam must then make sense of postmodern Paris, a confusing labyrinth devoid of the usual signposts that normally direct Western Civilization. On the Left Bank, he meets another philosophical investigator, Marcel Proust, who guides him along the corridors of existentialist thought while instructing him on the art of becoming a flneur, a spectator of life. During his investigation Sam encounters numerous Francophile historians and philosophers, as well as many writers and characters of French literature. The story is much like the menu at a fine French restaurant, with the first-time guest longing to sample all the exquisite dishes before making a final choice. Fortunately, the diner can taste that very special dish on another visit to Caf Philosophique. Bon Apptit!

2009 Post Script This 2009 revision especially honors all the wonderful souls who have touched my life ...always full of surprises. On September 19, 2008, at Barrows Neurological, St. Joes Hospital, Phoenix, I had brain surgery, or microvascular decompression. Two neurosurgeons, Drs. Andrew Shetter and Joseph Zabramski performed this high risk procedure. These guys were brilliant and the surgery 100% successful. But a couple of days post op I developed multiple complications, including pneumonia. On my third trip back into intensive care I felt... spent. I told the attending nurse that I didnt want to be re-intubated. The nurse called my wife and told her what I wanted.... After four weeks of hospitalization and five more weeks of intense therapy and recovery at home, I returned to my job with the State of Arizona.... Barack Obama had just been elected President of the United States.... An ever worsening economic crisis was gripping this country.... The historically predictable causes for this crisis had been forewarned by renowned scholars.... For now, consider the health of a US economy thats been moving away from... producing real products... to one which exchanges paper -- buying and selling... corporate and consumer debt... making financial bets, i.e., hedging. Contemporaneously... erode this economys middle class while concentrating... its wealth into fewer hands. Thats whats been happening in the US over the last 40+ years. Its an historical flashing red light for the end of an empire. Guess which empire. On May 18, 2009, I was advised that due to budgetary constraints, the Arizona Office for Americans with Disabilities was to be permanently closed.... My job as Executive Director... would terminate.... Like many of you who read this, Im looking for another job. Thats life. The rest is inside. Jacuzzis creative memoir of growing up disabled in a family of Italian inventors is filled with history, romance, and globe-trekking adventure. Business coach, manager, and ADA advocate, Ken has lived an incredible life!
Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cells convert chemical energy in hydrogen into electrical energy with water as the only by-product. Thus, PEM fuel cells hold great promise to reduce both pollutant emissions and dependency on fossil fuels, especially for transportation—passenger cars, utility vehicles, and buses—and small-scale stationary and portable power generators. But one of the greatest challenges to realizing the high efficiency and zero emissions potential of PEM fuel cells technology is heat and water management. This book provides an introduction to the essential concepts for effective thermal and water management in PEM fuel cells and an assessment on the current status of fundamental research in this field. The book offers you: • An overview of current energy and environmental challenges and their imperatives for the development of renewable energy resources, including discussion of the role of PEM fuel cells in addressing these issues; • Reviews of basic principles pertaining to PEM fuel cells, including thermodynamics, electrochemical reaction kinetics, flow, heat and mass transfer; and • Descriptions and discussions of water transport and management within a PEM fuel cell, including vapor- and liquid-phase water removal from the electrodes, the effects of two-phase flow, and solid water or ice dynamics and removal, particularly the specialized case of starting a PEM fuel cell at sub-freezing temperatures (cold start) and the various processes related to ice formation.
