Soil Nailing

A Practical Guide

Soil nailing is an in situ soil reinforcement technique that can be used to enhance the stability of slopes, retaining walls, embankments, and excavations. It involves installation of closely spaced, relatively slender unstressed tension-carrying structural elements into the ground to stabilize the soil mass. These elements, which are called soil nails, comprise steel or other engineering materials such as fiber reinforced polymer. Soil nailing did not gain popularity until the 1970s when engineers started to realize that the technique could offer an effective, robust, and economical reinforcing system for a variety of ground conditions. More importantly, the track record has been excellent in that no major collapses have been reported in properly designed and well-constructed soil nailed structures so far. Considerable experience and knowledge of the technique have been gained in the past few decades through systematic technical development work comprising laboratory tests, numerical modeling, physical modeling, site trials and field monitoring covering design, and construction practices. Soil Nailing: A Practical Guide consolidates the experience and advances made in the development and use of the soil nailing technique and encourages a wider adoption of the technique by practitioners. The book is intended for use by postgraduate students, researchers, and practicing civil and geotechnical engineers, who wish to have a more in-depth and fundamental understanding of the theory and practice behind the technique. It presents the basic principles of the technique as well as state-of-the-art knowledge and recommended standard of good practice in respect of design, construction, monitoring, and maintenance of soil nailed structures.

Inspired by classical and Italian Renaissance antecedents, writers from Ben Jonson to John Beaumont and Abraham Cowley wrote in idealized terms about the English countryside. It is often argued that the Renaissance pastoral was a highly figurative mode of writing that had more to do with culture and politics than with the actual countryside of England. For decades now literary criticism has had it that in pastoral verse, hills and crags and moors were extolled for their metaphoric worth, rather than for their own qualities. In What Else Is Pastoral? Ken Hiltner takes a fresh look at pastoral, offering an environmentally minded reading that reconnects the poems with literal landscapes, not just figurative ones. Considering the pastoral in literature from Virgil and Petrarch to Jonson and Milton, Hiltner proposes a new ecocritical approach to these texts. We only become truly aware of our environment, he explains, when its survival is threatened. As London expanded rapidly during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the city and surrounding rural landscapes began to look markedly different. Hiltner finds that Renaissance writers were acutely aware that the countryside they had known was being lost to air pollution, deforestation, and changing patterns of land use; their works suggest this new absence of nature through their appreciation for the scraps that remained in memory or in fact. This is the first book to tell the fascinating history of the region in western Ohio which became the city of Wapakoneta before it was settled by white settlers and became the birthplace of Neil Armstrong. It covers the time period from 300 million years ago when this site was on the equator to 1832 and 1833 when the Shawnee Indians who lived there were removed to the Indian lands west of the Mississippi River. The book talks about the great river that flowed through that area before the mile-thick glaciers terraformed the landscape to what we see today. It then proceeds to provide the details of the earliest maps of the area made by the first explorers of European descent into the Ohio Country as well as the earliest French and British trading posts and forts in the Ohio Country. This includes information never published before about Fort Au Glaize built along the Auglaize River in 1748 in Wapakoneta. It also provides details of the Ohio Indians focusing on the Shawnees and tracing their movements in Ohio up to the time they were placed on reservations. The Wapakoneta Shawnee Reserve was the site of two Shawnee council houses which are highlighted in the book. Shawnees whose interesting exploits are covered include Black Hoof, Tecumseh and his brother, The Prophet, Logan and Blue Jacket. The book also provides some details of the lives of Francis Duchouquet, their interpreter, and John Johnston, their government agent. To place all the events in perspective, 19 chronologies and timelines are provided. Throughout, the book reveals interesting and surprising connections between Neil Armstrong and the people, places and events in this very early history. The book is supplemented with 78 figures, 47 tables and 10 appendices.

Sports and popular music are synergistic agents in the construction of identity and community. They are often interconnected through common cross-marketing tactics and through influence on each other's performative strategies and stylistic content. Typically only studied as separate entities, popular music and sport cultures mutually 'play' off each other in exchanges of style, ideologies and forms. Posing unique challenges to notions of mind - body dualities, nationalism, class, gender, and racial codes and sexual orientation, Dr Ken McLeod illuminates the paradoxical and often conflicting relationships associated with these modes of leisure and entertainment and demonstrates that they are not culturally or ideologically distinct but are interconnected modes of contemporary social practice. Examples include how music is used to enhance sporting events, such as anthems, chants/cheers, and intermission entertainment, music that is used as an active part of the athletic event, and music that has been written about or that is associated with sports. There are also connections in the use of music in sports movies, television and video games and important, though critically under-acknowledged, similarities regarding spectatorship, practice and performance. Despite the scope of such confluences, the extraordinary impact of the interrelationship of music and sports on popular culture has remained little recognized. McLeod ties together several influential threads of popular culture and fills a significant void in our understanding of the construction and communication of identity in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
