In the United States, an estimated 42 million people suffer from some form of movement disorder. Common movement disorders include Parkinson's disease (PD), essential tremor (ET), and dystonia. Although medications may be helpful for these conditions, in many patients, symptoms cannot be controlled with medications alone. In such situations, their physicians may recommend a surgical procedure known as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). DBS is a revolutionary technology using an implanted device to deliver electrical stimulation to the brain to help symptoms, alleviate suffering, and improve quality of life. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved DBS as a treatment for essential tremor in 1997, for Parkinson's disease in 2002, and dystonia in 2003. Deep brain stimulation has dramatically changed the lives of many patients with uncontrollable tremors. Patients often can resume normal activities, such as feeding and dressing themselves, and can have active and fulfilling lives. The need for anti-tremor medications is often reduced or eliminated. Though it's no longer considered experimental, DBS is, for now, still used as a second- or third-line treatment, reserved for patients with more advanced cases of the disease and those for whom medication alone is inadequate or can't be adjusted precisely enough to keep their tremors and writhing under control. However the idea of this surgery being a "last resort" is an evolving concept. Ten years ago doctors were operating on only the most severe, disabled, wheelchair-dependent patients, now they are operating on patients with moderate-to-severe cases of PD, ET and Dystonia. The thought is that this trend will continue. Instead of saying "wait another five to ten years until you become more disabled" doctors are realizing that the earlier they use DBS, the more they can improve the quality of life of their patients.
Interactions Between Chinese Herbal Medicinal Products and Orthodox Drugs provides basic biomedical principles on adverse and beneficial interactions between Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) products (herbs and ready-made medications) and orthodox drugs. The book includes concise accounts of the trends of development and progress in Chinese medicine, pharmacological principles of CHM materials and mechanisms of interactions. Clinically relevant interactions are summarized in tables for easy reference with a catalogue of commonly used CHM products. A unique chapter with an action plan is assigned to promote research and documentation of herb-drug interactions. This textbook is desperately needed by undergraduates, postgraduates, medical practitioners, health professionals, medications regulatory bodies, and R&D professionals in pharmaceutical industries who are involved in CHM products.
Aristotle is the most influential philosopher of practice, and Knight's new book explores the continuing importance of Aristotelian philosophy. First, it examines the theoretical bases of what Aristotle said about ethical, political and productive activity. It then traces ideas of practice through such figures as St Paul, Luther, Hegel, Heidegger and recent Aristotelian philosophers, and evaluates Alasdair MacIntyre's contribution. Knight argues that, whereas Aristotle's own thought legitimated oppression, MacIntyre's revision of Aristotelianism separates ethical excellence from social elitism and justifies resistance. With MacIntyre, Aristotelianism becomes revolutionary. MacIntyre's case for the Thomistic Aristotelian tradition originates in his attempt to elaborate a Marxist ethics informed by analytic philosophy. He analyses social practices in teleological terms, opposing them to capitalist institutions and arguing for the cooperative defence of our moral agency. In condensing these ideas, Knight advances a theoretical argument for the reformation of Aristotelianism and an ethical argument for social change.
FATHER KELVIN CHRISTILIUS TAM was born in Trinidad and has lived in Cali, Colombia since the 1980s. He entered the priesthood in the 1950s after studying in Quebec, Canada and Dublin, Ireland. He served in a variety of locales, focusing on ministry to the poor and marginalized. Father Tam’s love of all species began as a young boy growing up with many animals on his grandfather’s estate in Trinidad. One of his projects at a college in Nigeria was a collection of animals that eventually became a zoo with over two hundred exotic animals. As a priest, he filled the roles of pastoral guide, educator, social worker, “parent,” advisor, and friend—all in the conviction of his faith, vocation, and love of others. As an educator, he inspired high achievement, excellence, and personal commitment in his students. As a student himself, he was an all-rounder who excelled academically, in many sporting activities, scouts, and almost anything that called for his service. Father Tam demonstrates a life truly blessed.
Remembering the Samsui Women tells the story of women from the Samsui area of Guangdong, China, who migrated to Singapore during a period of economic and natural calamity, leaving their families behind. In their new country, many found work in the construction industry, while others worked in households or factories where they were called hong tou jin, translated literally as "red-head-scarf," after the headgear that protected them from the sun. Contributing to current debates in the fields of social memory and migration studies, this is the first book to examine how the Samsui women remember their own migratory experiences and how they, in turn, are remembered as pioneering figures in both Singapore and China.

C.M. (Mary) Turnbull's contributions to historical writing on Singapore extended from her 1962 thesis, published in 1972 as "The Straits Settlements, 1826-1867: Indian Presidency to Crown Colony", to her magisterial history of Singapore, first published in 1977 and re-issued in 2009 in an updated edition as A History of Singapore, 1819-2005. Her approach to history involved detailed work with documents and published materials, with a particular focus on political and economic history. One contributor to the present volume described the book as an "exercise in endowing a modern 'nation-state' with a coherent past that should explain the present." As styles in history evolved, younger scholars including some of her former students and colleagues began exploring new approaches to historical research that drew on non-English-language souce material and asked fresh questions of the sources. Mary enjoyed controversy and expected debate, and had a deep interest in these accounts, which were in many ways a natural progression from her own publications even when they raised questions about her interpretations and conclusions. Studying Singapore's Past had its origins in a conference organised to discuss her work. The volume includes ten contributions, some from long-established scholars of Singapore's history, others from a new generation of researchers. Their work offers an evaluation of established understandings of Singapore's history, and gives an indication of new directions that researchers are exploring. In publishing the book, the editor not only pays tribute to a distinguished historian but also seeks to make a contribution to the historiography of Singapore and to ongoing debates about Singapore's past.
Tackling Trident is about two unique academic conferences in which an international group of academics, while discussing scientific conference papers, simultaneously blockaded Faslane Naval Base, home of the UKʼs Trident system of nuclear weapons of mass-destruction, in Scotland, in January and June 2007. This book presents the academics that took part in the innovative ʻAcademic Conference Blockadesʼ, the conference papers that outlines the scientific rational behind their nuclear resistance, and the year long campaign Faslane 365 in which this ʻcritique in actionʼ occurred. Tackling Trident is a book written by engaged academics that tackles nuclear weapon issues, Trident, academic responsibility, and possibilities for academic, personal and social change. This book is a fundamental challenge to the suggested scientific legitimacy of nuclear weapon ʼdefenceʼ, and the suggested political and moral ʼneutralityʼ of academia." -- Back cover.
