TRB's Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Report 125: Guidebook for Mitigating Fixed-Route Bus-and-Pedestrian Collisions is designed to help assist small, medium, and large transit agencies and their community members in identifying preventative or remedial strategies for reducing the frequency and severity of bus-and-pedestrian collisions. The report explores strategies to mitigate collisions, includes case studies on the implementation of mitigating strategies, and highlights important considerations associated with improving pedestrian safety around transit buses.
This report presents the mitigation methods tested and used by transit agencies to reduce collisions between light rail vehicles (LRVs) and motor vehicles where light rail transit (LRT) runs through or adjacent to highway intersections controlled by conventional traffic signals. A particular focus is placed on collisions occurring between LRVs and vehicles making left-hand turns at these intersections. This report offers success stories and specific actions to achieve positive results, as well as examples of unsuccessful actions. The issues addressed include a range of LRT operations and environments such as median-running, side-running, contra-flow, and mixed-use LRT alignments; urban and suburban setting; and a variety of U.S. geographic regions.

With increased connectivity between vehicles, sensors, systems, shared-use transportation, and mobile devices, unexpected and unparalleled amounts of data are being added to the transportation domain at a rapid rate, and these data are too large, too varied in nature, and will change too quickly to be handled by the traditional database management systems of most transportation agencies. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Research Report 952: Guidebook for Managing Data from Emerging Technologies for Transportation provides guidance, tools, and a big data management framework, and it lays out a roadmap for transportation agencies on how they can begin to shift - technically, institutionally, and culturally - toward effectively managing data from emerging technologies. Modern, flexible, and scalable "big data" methods to manage these data need to be adopted by transportation agencies if the data are to be used to facilitate better decision-making. As many agencies are already forced to do more with less while meeting higher public expectations, continuing with traditional data management systems and practices will prove costly for agencies unable to shift.
