Ted Smiths life has never been boring. The son of Italian immigrants, hes been through a world war, several near-death experiences, and a few less-than-savory business deals. Now that he is the president of the Mansfield Industries Mining Company, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, he wants nothing more than to help his girlfriend, Charlotte Mansfield, with her psychological trauma. Ted was once best friends with Charlottes father, Walter, and though several years separate the couple in age, Ted loves her deeply. But Charlotte has developed PTSD from years of abuse at her fathers hands and has become mentally unstable. Ted wants Charlotte to know what her father was like before the war ruined him, and he begins to read her Walters World War IIera diary. Even with the help of a family therapist, Charlotte is unable to exorcize the demons that have caused her to develop multiple split personalities. Confused and tormented by the past and the present, Charlotte leaves Ted to try and find healing. But Ted himself has a new identity to grapple with as he becomes the Smith family patriarch in California. When specters of the past threaten Charlotte and Ted, they must make a decision: stay and answer for their crimes, or flee and start a new live elsewhere?
Accessible in style, while offering thorough and well-organized content and heavyweight ideas. The attention to visual design makes the text interesting and appealing, as well as easy to navigate."---Anthony Baker, Tennessee Technological University "Everything's an Argument is the total package---no other reader is this good a rhetoric and no other argument text is this good a reader." ---Jim Coppoc, Iowa State University "For many years, Everything's an Argument has been my favorite textbook to use for the second-semester composition course. It covers complex concepts in a way that is very accessible for students. The text is up-to-date with contemporary issues." ---Lisa Kirby, North Carolina Wesleyan College "Chapter 1 gets five stars from me; it begins a semester-long conversation about whether everything is, indeed, an argument. I think students have never considered this concept and are challenged by and excited about it." ---Ellen Johnson, Arizona State University "The readings are current and timely, which helps students apply what they are reading to their lives and encourages making connections between what they are reading and what crosses their path outside the classroom walls." ---Kristin Smith, Durham Technical Community College "Controversial at times, very thorough, interesting and has something for everybody's taste and teaching style." ---Sarah Eichelman, Walters State Community College
Everything’s an Argument with Readings helps students analyze arguments and create their own, while emphasizing skills like rhetorical listening and critical reading. The text is available for the first time in Achieve, with downloadable e-book, grammar support, interactive tutorials, and more.
Built on the keystones of rhetoric, Everyone's an Author provides a strong foundation for authoring in the digital age: in college essays, but also on Twitter; in print, but also online; with words, but also with sound, video, and images. It shows students that the rhetorical skills they already use in social media, in their home and religious communities, at work and in other nonacademic contexts are the same ones they'll need to succeed in college. Examples and readings drawn from across multiple media and dealing with topics that matter to students today make this a book that everyone who takes first-year writing will relate to.
A streamlined argument guide plus provocative thematic reader, Everything’s an Argument with Readings helps students understand and analyze the arguments around them as well as create their own. Lucid explanations cover the classical rhetoric of the ancient Greeks through the multimodal rhetoric of today, with professional and student models of every type. New attention to rhetorical listening skills teaches students to communicate effectively and ethically as they work through potentially contentious discussions in and outside the classroom. Thoroughly updated with fresh new selections in both the guide and the reader, this edition of Everything’s an Argument captures the issues and images that matter to students today. LaunchPad for Everything’s an Argument provides unique, book-specific materials for your course, such as brief quizzes to test students’ comprehension of chapter content and of each reading selection. LearningCurve--adaptive, game-like practice--helps students master important argument concepts, including fallacies, claims, and evidence. Also available in a brief version without the reader.
High School students today are writing more than ever. Everyone's an Author bridges the gap between the writing students already do--online, at home, in their communities--and the writing they'll do in high school, college, and beyond. It builds student confidence by showing that they already know how to think rhetorically and offers advice for applying those skills as students, professionals, and citizens. Because students are also reading more than ever, the third edition includes new advice for reading critically, engaging respectfully with others, and distinguishing facts from misinformation.
This book is a compilation of experimentally determined solubility ranges of over 1,700 compounds in the National Toxicology Program's Chemical Repository. Each compound's solubility was determined in a consistent manner in one to six solvents. Solvents chosen were those most commonly used for toxicology studies, spill cleanups, and chemical synthesis or chemical reaction experiments. These solvents include acetone, 95% ethanol, water, dimethyl sulfoxide, methanol, and toluene. Data for many of the research and industrial chemicals featured in this volume do not exist anywhere else. If you are a toxicologist, safety professional, industrial hygienist, or chemist, this book is a valuable reference tool you'll find yourself using every day.
This database provides a vast amount of information about potentially toxic chemicals to regulatory and research agencies, consultants, academics, and libraries. The National Toxicology Program's Chemical Database consists of eight volumes containing 50 fields that present detailed information on 2,270 different chemicals. The data is obtained from the literature or experimentally determined. Each compound is listed in every volume even when there is no information available for it in some volumes. Information in the NTP database was gathered and updated as compounds were used throughout a 12 year period from 1979 to 1991. Throughout the eight volumes, the primary chemical name and the Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number (CAS No.) remain constant and all 2,270 chemicals are listed alphabetically in each volume. The NTP database can be sold as a set or individually. Each volume consists of one 3-1/2" and two 5-1/4" diskettes , in addition to a 64 page manual that describes how to use the software. Diskettes will run on IBM® or IBM-compatible equipment with DOS 2.0 and higher, 640K internal memory (RAM), and a hard drive with at least 2-17MB of available disk space. Use the eight volumes together to get the full benefit of the NTP Chemical Repository Database, or select only those volumes that contain the information you need and use them as stand-alone databases. Each volume consists of one 3-1/2" and two 5-1/4" diskettes, that will run on IBM or IBM-compatible hardware!
