The Cay is the story of Philip and the island he lives on. Through a series of traumatic episodes Philip must become a survivor and learn to trust other people. This literature unit explores the issues of war, friendship, making choices and other themes through vocabulary activities, quizzes, hands on projects and cooperative learning activities. Research ideas and options for evaluation are also included.
Children learn to use and understand process skills such as observing, hypothesising, recording and interpreting data, based on investigations of the world around them. In this way, students acquire critical and analytic thinking skills which can be applied to all of their experiences. Contents include: What is a Machine?, How Are Machines Used?, How Many Simple Machines Are Around You?, Compound Machines, How is a Person Like a Machine? and Careers with Machines.
