Unless Bayard can travel to the original world of the long-tailed invaders and stop the plague at its source, the Earth of the Imperium and all the other Earths in all the universes will fall before the verminous hordes from a timeline that should never have existed in the first place.

Mankind was at war with the hideous Gool...and losing. Then, beyond Ganymead, one man fought the searing brain probe of an alien spy...and won. He mastered the power of its telepathic mind-control, captured the secret of its matter transmitters, and learned how to destroy the Gool Overlords. He called intelligence with news of the victory and headed home. Straight into a barrage of Terran nuclear warheads. Past missiles, shells, and assassins, he made it home - alone, badly wounded, and branded a traitor by conventional Terran wisdom that said no one could survive the Gool brain probe. No one, that is, except a brainwashed puppet deliberately allowed to survive to serve the Goos as a spy. But he must survive Earth's attempts to kill him - because no matter how much his fellow humans want him dead, he knows that he is the only one who can lead them against the Gool and have a chance at victory.

HE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MURDER It was a set-up ... but who was behind it, and why did they want Ban Tarleton out of the United Planetary Navy? Peace, it's wonderful! Except when the Peace Movement is actually a subterfuge by the warlike and imperialistic Kril to force the Terrans to abandon the planet, leaving it defenceless and ripe for conquest. The Terran diplomats have their usual primary concerns; covering their, ah, flank and not doing anything that might threaten their careers, which means that they're not about to do anything, period. Once again, it's up to Retief to thwart the would-be conquerors, even if the unthinkable happens, and he's drummed out of the Corps Diplomatique Terrestriennel. And Retief has never been more dangerous to the villains than when he's operating outside the rules of diplomacy.
Two Billion Years ago, a unit of life had the urge to climb out of the sea. It died. But that didn’t count. Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic science fiction double novels. The first novel, “A Hoax in Time,” is a tale about an ultimate computer and perhaps the ultimate hero, who combine in this rambunctious science fiction romp to perpetrate, simultaneously, a superb comic opera on the one hand, and on the other an insightful and satiric comment on the world we all live in. Appropriately enough, the link that unifies grand farce and thought-provoking philosophy is the Internal Revenue Service—without whose greedy hands this story could never have been written. The second novel, “Inside Earth,” is great futuristic drama by sci-fi master, Poul Anderson. It is a tale of interplanetary rebellion. Obviously no conqueror wants his subjects to revolt against his rule. Obviously? This one would go to any lengths to start a rebellion! When Halgan Conru was sent to Earth by the Empire, it was with the express purpose of helping to generate a successful revolution against his own people. Little did he know that the strength and charms of a lonely Earth woman would soon test his loyalty. Poul Anderson is one of the most beloved science fiction authors of all time. Here is another fine example of his story-telling prowess.
