Barclay James Harvest are surely overdue for greater recognition. They have Long been feted in Germany and in other parts of Continental Europe, but remain largely unknown at home in the U.K. except to a fiercely loyal cognoscenti. Formed in the Saddleworth area of north-west England in 1967, the band released a series of outstanding albums showcasing their pastoral, classically-influenced brand of rock, before hitting the heights of their success, culminating in a massive open-air concert in Berlin in front of an estimated quarter of a million people. With only one line-up change, the departure of keyboard maestro and founder member Woolly Wolstenholme in 1979, they continued to record until 1998, when the band finally split into two separate groups, led by original members John Lees and Les Holroyd respectively. The core of this book covers Barclay James Harvest’s output from 1968 to 1997, with analysis and background information for every studio album and every song released from that period, but there is also room for an overview of their live albums and of the member’s activities after the break up of the original group. It is required reading for anyone with more than a passing interest in one of the rock world’s most underrated bands. Keith and Monika Domone have both been Barclay James Harvest aficionados from an early age, even meeting through their shared love of the band’s music. They graduated from running the band’s official fan club to writing and curating the Barclay James Harvest and John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest web sites, in between work and parenting. They were also responsible for penning two editions of The Barclay James Harvest Story, the only biography of the band to have appeared in print to date, and now out of print. They have two grown-up children, living in Hampshire, UK.

Religion is an important social force, both for good and evil, in the modern world. In the final volume of his comparative theology, Keith Ward considers the main ways in which religion and society interact, and the ways in which the major world religions need to adapt themselves in the modern world. These religions are examined as forms of social life, ranging from communities which seek to renounce the world, to those which seek to embody the laws of God in society, those which see religions in critical dialogue with social structures, and those which see religion as a primarily individual matter. The ideas of eretz Yisrael, the umma of Islam, the Buddhist sangha, the Christian church, and the Hindu sampradaya are critically analysed. Ward also considers the doctrine of the church in Aquinas, Calvin, Schleiermacher, and Tillich, and develops a view of the church in a global perspective by means of both a historical and thematic approach. He proposes a radical vision of the church as a person-affirming, world-transforming society in the emerging global community of many faiths and cultures. The relation of religious belief and morality, and the ambiguous role of religion in society, is investigated, and the need for a new religious paradigm is defended, expressing a global perspective without insistence on uniformity.

Ben Rod Jordan's rustic environment consisted of unpaved roads, no electricity, no running water, no television or even a telephone. He and his companions created their own entertainment, usually provided by the swimmin' hole, hunting with his brothers and rambling the wood with their dog Bruno. Being isolated by the steep hills surrounding him, Ben Rod was invigorated by the sounds of the rattling freight trains and the whistling of the river boats sounding over the hills, stimulating his imaginative mind. His educational facilities consisted of a small one room schoolhouse, one teacher, a student body of sixteen which included students from the first to the eighth grades. Hearing the radio for the first time flinging a voice from a distance of thirty miles, amazed him, but further energized his vivid imagination causing him to wonder what lie beyond his rustic hilly environment. Fearing preachers, "because they buried little boys," he always managed to escape their presence. Ben Rod and his companions active mischievous lives even though hard and difficult, enjoyed life to the fullest when their duties were not required tilling the hilly farm on which they lived.

Among the items acquired in 1996 by Jay Snider, the collector of printed Americana, are 278 partially printed, early Pennsylvania mortgage forms. The royal folio forms are bound together, as issued, in full calf stamped with tools thought to have belond to William Davies, a bookbinder who flourished in Philadelphia from 1722 to 1740. The mortgage forms include printed preambles identifying Pennsylvania's General Loan Office trustees as the mortgagees, and manuscript completions dated as early as Sept. 23, 1729. It has been established that it was printed by Benjamin Franklin and Hugh Meredith with their firsst font of pica type. This illustrated study places the Snider volume in its historical, political, biographical, and bibliographical context. Index.
