He then forfeits his student deferment and risks being drafted into the Army. He does not want to flee to Canada to escape the draft nor does he want to go to prison for five years, so he enlists in the US Navy’s hospital corps to avoid combat and the killing. He enters basic training and boasts to his shipmates about rioting at Kent State in May 1970, when National Guardsmen fired on protestors and killed four students. Carl’s Navy superior officers learn about his anti-war past and threaten to make his life a living hell if he stirs up any trouble with his shipmates. Carl endures the harassment and brutal disciplinary action against him for resisting Navy rules and regulations and for protesting the mistreatment of other recruits. He struggles to survive and regain his identity, freedom, and dignity in this vulgar, abusive, sometimes violent, and dehumanizing world of the military.

The holdings are held by an elderly and wealthy Hong Kong businessman. The agent is curious why so much funding needs to be generated in such a short period of time to fund the flu vaccine and cancer research at Shanghai Genomics. He later discovers that former scientists at Shanghai Genomics have died under mysterious circumstances. Then a close friend working on the divestitures is killed. Thereafter, the agent retrieves a sample of the flu vaccine and the DNA is scanned. Genes produced in the project would make the Chinese a super race. The agent reports his findings to the CIA director, who in turn reports to the president of the United States. The president discusses the matter with the president of China, and a plan is conceived to eliminate the flu vaccine dosages, which are located on a refrigerated ship in international waters. The plan includes the use of two B-2 stealth bombers armed with neutron bombs that would kill the live flu vaccine but not harm the ship. Will the plan be successful? The anglophobia of many of the nations' press, the activities of pro-Boer organizations, and the shaping of public and parliamentary opinion are examined alongside the real politics and diplomatic considerations that took precedence. In addition, there are summation chapters that examine both the origins of the war and its legacy for Britain's expansionist ambitions. Together these essays present the latest findings on a watershed in international relations that heralded substantive changes of attitude and policy on the part of national governments towards their dependencies and had far-reaching consequences for alliance systems and the international balance of power at the start of the twentieth century.

In the mid-1960's, several Italian mathematicians began to study the connections between classical arguments in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, and the contemporaneous development of algebraic K-theory in the US. These connections were exemplified by the work of Andreotti-Bombieri, Salmon, and Traverso on seminormality, and by Bass-Murthy on the Picard groups of polynomial rings. Interactions proceeded far beyond this initial point to encompass Chow groups of singular varieties, complete intersections, and applications of K-theory to arithmetic and real geometry. This volume contains the proceedings from a US-Italy Joint Summer Seminar, which focused on this circle of ideas. The conference, held in June 1989 in Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy, was supported jointly by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche and the National Science Foundation. The book contains contributions from some of the leading experts in this area.

For centuries of Chinese history, polygamy and prostitution were closely linked practices that legitimized the "polygynous male," the man with multiple sexual partners. Despite their strict hierarchies, these practices also addressed fundamental antagonisms in sexual relations in serious and constructive ways. Qing fiction abounds in stories of female resistance and superiority. Women—main wives, concubines, and prostitutes—were adept at exerting control and gaining status for themselves, while men indulged in elaborate fantasies about female power. In Polygamy and Sublime Passion, Keith McMahon introduces a new concept, "passive polygamy," to explain the unusual number of Qing stories in which women take charge of a man’s desires, turning him into an instrument of female will. To this he adds a story that haunted the institutions of polygamy and prostitution: the tale of "sublime passion," in which the main characters are a "remarkable" woman and her male lover. Throughout the book McMahon examines how polygamy, prostitution, and the story of sublime passion encountered the first stages of paradigmatic change in the nineteenth century, decades before the legal abolition of polygamy. By the end of the Qing dynasty in 1911, love stories were celebrating the exploits of street-smart prostitutes who fleeced gullible patrons in the bustling city of Shanghai. What do these characters have in common with their early counterparts as men and women became inhabitants of a new city in an era flooded with ideas from radically foreign sources—all of this taking place in a time of economic and cultural dislocation? McMahon reads late Qing love stories in a historically symbolic way, taking them as part of a larger fantasy of Chinese civilization undergoing a fundamental crisis. The polygamous marriage and the affairs of the brothel became metaphorical staging grounds for portraying the destiny of China on the verge of modernity. Finally, McMahon speculates on the changes polygamous sexuality underwent after the Qing dynasty ended and whether it exerted a residual influence in later times.
