Because every single one of us will die, most of us would like to know what—if anything—awaits us afterward, not to mention the fate of lost loved ones. After establishing that John 8.6, 8 is indeed a claim that Jesus could write, this book offers a new interpretation and transmission history of the "Pericope Adulterae." Not only did the pericope s interpolator place the story in John s Gospel in order to highlight the claim that Jesus could write, but he did so at John 7.53 8.11 as a result of carefully reading the Johannine narrative. In this study, Edwin K. Broadhead's purpose is to gather the ancient evidence of Jewish Christianity and to reconsider its impact. He begins his investigation with the hypothesis that groups in antiquity who were characterized by Jewish ways of following Jesus may be vastly underrepresented, misrepresented and undervalued in the ancient sources and in modern scholarship. These events, labelled as ‘miracles’ by the emerging church in subsequent decades and centuries, unfortunately downplayed Jesus’ genuine impact on humanity by framing it as supernatural or otherworldly. Reading Medieval Latin is an introduction to medieval Latin in its cultural and historical context and is designed to serve the needs of students who have completed the learning of basic classical Latin morphology and syntax. (Users of Reading Latin will find that it follows on after the end of section 5 of that course.) It is an anthology, organised chronologically and thematically in four parts. Each part is divided into chapters with introductory material, texts, and commentaries which give help with syntax, sentence-structure, and background. There are brief sections on medieval orthography and grammar, together with a vocabulary which includes words (or meanings) not found in standard classical dictionaries. The texts chosen cover areas of interest to students of medieval history, philosophy, theology, and literature.
Paul Tillich is exceptional in modern theologians that his distinctive and abundant understanding of the concept of life and spirit has the potential to engage with other disciplines, such as biology, psychology, cosmology and social science; and that his ontological understanding of “life as spirit” which is so crucial in the ecological consideration, is so complex and subtle that enables powerful and critical inter-religious dialogue in environmental ethics. Current historiography on aspects of Bahamian history presents limited research on the African presence in the islands, irrespective of the fact that arguably 85% of the population of that country is represented by such persons. One primary objective of this book is to begin to more adequately address this literary ommission by presenting an initial comprehensive work on the subject. The book attempts to trace the origin of this migration by focusing on some of the primary dynamics of ethnicity within the context of the geo-politics and geo-economics of the emerging Atlantic world. It is hoped that the reader will emerge with a greater awareness of, and wider insight into Bahamian history, and, the Bahamian majority will leave with a greater sense of what it truly means to be a Bahamian....
Jesus' Literacy: Education and the Teacher from Galilee provides the first book-length treatment of the literate status of the Historical Jesus Despite many scholars' assumptions that Jesus was an illiterate peasant or, conversely, even a Pharisee none have critically engaged the evidence to ask 'Could Jesus read or write?' Some studies have attempted to provide a direct answer to the question using the limited primary evidence that exists. However, these previous attempts have not been sufficiently sensitive to the literary environment of Second Temple Judaism, an area that has seen significant scholarly progression in the last ten to fifteen years. They have provided unnuanced classifications of Jesus as either 'literate' or 'illiterate' rather than observing that literacy at this time did not fall into such monolithic categories. An additional contribution of this work will is in the area of criteria of authenticity in Historical Jesus studies. Emphasizing plausibility and the later effects of the Historical Jesus Chris L. Keith argues that the most plausible explanation for why the early Church remembered Jesus simultaneously as a literate Jewish teacher and an illiterate Jewish teacher was that he was able to convince his contemporaries of both realities.
