Electromagnetic metamaterials are a family of shaped periodic materials which achieve extraordinary scattering properties that are difficult or impossible to achieve with naturally occurring materials. This book focuses on one such feature of electromagnetic metamaterials—the theory, properties, and applications of the absorption of electromagnetic radiation. We have written this book for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and practitioners, covering the background and tools necessary to engage in the research and practice of metamaterial electromagnetic wave absorbers in various fundamental and applied settings. Given the growing impact of climate change, the call for innovations that can circumvent the use of conventional energy sources will be increasingly important. As we highlight in Chapter 6, the absorption of radiation with electromagnetic metamaterials has been used for energy harvesting and energy generation, and will help to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Other applications ranging from biochemical sensing to imaging are also covered. We hope this book equips interested readers with the tools necessary to successfully engage in applied metamaterials research for clean, sustainable energy. This book consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 provides an introduction and a brief history of electromagnetic wave absorbers; Chapter 2 focuses on several theories of perfect absorbers; Chapter 3 discusses the scattering properties achievable with metamaterial absorbers; Chapter 4 provides significant detail on the fabricational processes; Chapter 5 discusses examples of dynamical absorbers; and Chapter 6 highlights applications of metamaterial absorbers.
While voice is widely used in speech recognition and speaker identification, its application in biomedical fields is much less common. This book systematically introduces the authors’ research on voice analysis for biomedical applications, particularly pathological voice analysis. Firstly, it reviews the field to highlight the biomedical value of voice. It then offers a comprehensive overview of the workflow and aspects of pathological voice analysis, including voice acquisition systems, voice pitch estimation methods, glottal closure instant detection, feature extraction and learning, and the multi-audio fusion approaches. Lastly, it discusses the experimental results that have shown the superiority of these techniques. This book is useful to researchers, professionals and postgraduate students working in fields such as speech signal processing, pattern recognition, and biomedical engineering. It is also a valuable resource for those involved in interdisciplinary research.
This book reproduces the life of a person belonging to a special generation in China. The generation that grew up simultaneously with the communist country experienced a series of political movements, including the notorious Cultural Revolution. Shortly after its end in 1976, some brave and fortunate ones went back to schools to remedy their lost decade. Some of them even came to the United States to study and work. "A Long Journey under the Blue Sky" illustrates how those people struggled and survived through the brutal movement in China, and how they become scientists and engineers in America. The book covers a long period from his poor infancy till a happy senior citizen. His personal experience would reveal the drastic changes dominated by so called Marxist ideology. The book is divided into two parts. The first half covers the time he spent in China, and the second describes his life in the free world, where he has learned not only physics, but also freedom and democracy.

The book is a collection of short stories and proses, which reproduce the common life of the poor and small people who struggled in hutong and multi-family courtyards in Beijing during the 1950's. It provides vivid descriptions about the violence and torture in the cultural revolution. These stories reflect the hard feelings, sympathy, as well as nostalgia of the author. The readers will find themselves crossing both space and time and landed at a strange coordinate system. For the generation born after 1940 in China, all of them had ever fallen into a big turmoil and a series of political movements. Therefore, they do have plenty impressive stories. However due to the mass surveillance, most of their stories are difficult to be published in China. Hence the book is named "The Untold Stories.
As a physicist, the author has particular interests in Chinese literature and history. After retirement, he got enough time to pick up his hobby in liberal arts. Starting from the language culture, then, to history and music. He spent several months on a paper 《Talking on Chinese Words and Characters》, in which he emphasized the beauty of the Chinese language, as well as the difficulties encountered in the digital age. Following that, he finished a series of papers discussing Chinese verbs, prepositions, as well as idioms, in comparison with English. In the article on Chinese history, he is trying to generalize from the data in different dynasties in a way similar to statistical analysis, and thus to reach some commonsense conclusions. Two papers about the popular songs in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as a discussion about Beijing Opera are also collected in the book.
Cheng Nan Jiu Shi" is a collection of stories and memory about the people and ambience at a poor corner in the south part of Beijing around 1950s. The book reproduced the common life of the poor and small people who struggled in the alleys(hutong)and multi-family courtyards(dazayuan). These stories reflect my hard feelings, sympathy, as well as nostalgia. The stories in the book are a true illustration of the history. The readers will find themselves crossing both space and time and landing in a special coordinate system. As for these poor and lower class people, each of them was just like a small boat floating on the sea, and could be buried at any time by the huge wave.

As one of the intellectuals educated in communist China, the author was lucky to be able to study in the United States. And thus he had an opportunity to compare the difference between the two systems. Gradually he revised his views on dictatorship from directly personal feeling. After retirement, he spent plenty time in writing political essays and comments on current affairs of China. In the first article, he discussed the importance of free speech. Following that, he touched upon a series of political issues, such as human rights, showing the sword and self-concealing, the path to democracy, the historical roots of the cultural revolution, as well as the gains and losses of the unity of a large country. These articles are based on independent thought, some of them have been discussed by friends. The book would also raise some open questions about the present status and its future of China. However, no matter how hard it is, democracy and freedom will come true eventually.
