This book presents recent studies on the power electronics used for the next generation wind turbine system. Some criteria and tools for evaluating and improving the critical performances of the wind power converters have been proposed and established. The book addresses some emerging problems as well as possibilities for the wind power conversion, and may be useful as an inspiring reference for the researchers in this field.
The indigenous cloud forests in the Taita Hills have suffered substantial degradation for several centuries due to agricultural expansion. Additionally, climate change imposes an imminent threat for local economy and environmental sustainability. In such circumstances, elaborating tools to conciliate socioeconomic growth and natural resources conservation is an enormous challenge. This chapter describes applications of remote sensing and geographic information systems for assessing land-cover changes in the Taita Hills and its surrounding lowlands. Furthermore, it provides an overall assessment on the consequences of land-cover changes to water resources, biodiversity and livelihoods. The analyses presented in this study were undertaken at multiple spatial scales, using field data, airborne digital images and satellite imagery. Furthermore, a modelling framework was designed to delineate agricultural expansion projections and evaluate the future impacts of agriculture on soil erosion and irrigation water demand.

The book attempts to draw together the various strands of evidence that have led to present knowledge of the distribution of density throughout the interior of the Earth. Details are also given of other properties with which the density is closely linked, including pressure, compressibility and compression, rigidity, seismic velocities, Poisson's ratio and gravitational intensity. Questions of thermodynamics and chemical composition and phase enter discussions where they bear more or less sharply on the density determination; but the book does not purport to be a comprehensive text on the Earth's internal tem perature distribution and composition. The density distributions of other planets are discussed. The quest for clues on the Earth's internal densities has long been an exciting one, and an aim of the book is to present a developing story which has fascinated the author over much of his worl(ing life. The early chapters refer to key developments from ancient times to around 1930. The later chapters recount, in greater detail, develop ments since 1930. The stage has now been reached where numerous published papers bearing on the Earth's density seem to do little more than fidget around the resolving power of long accumulated observational data. So the present seems an appropriate time to try to put some perspec tive into the story. Of course, the story will never be quite finished: in describing the interior of the Earth, there will always be extra decimal places to add as further significant evidence arises.

Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are salts that are liquid at or below room temperature. The unique properties of RTILs such as low melting point, low vapor pressure, non-flammability and large electrochemical potential window have made them very promising in applications ranging from solvents for organic synthesis and electrolytes for energy storage devices to potentially novel electro-optic materials. Despite the broad utility of RTILs, understanding the fundamental interactions between constituents at the molecular scale, and the existence of long-range organization in these systems remains limited. Therefore, it is important to characterize the length scale of organization in RTILs because such order will bring with it the development of a variety of novel applications.We used picosecond laser technologies and time resolved spectroscopic approaches to gain insight into the existence and length scale of molecular organization in RTILs. We have used time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) detection with a confocal microscope for spatially resolved excitation and time-resolved emission collection to measure the rotational diffusion dynamics of three structurally similar chromophores (anionic, cationic and neutral) as a function of distance from the silica support. The results reflected the existence of a charge density gradient induced in the RTIL by the charge present on the silica surface. Control experiments were also performed for 1) identical measurements in ethylene glycol and 2) capping the silica support with Me2SiCl2 to prove this property is unique to RTILs in contact with charged surfaces. Second, we have used fluorescence anisotropy decay imaging (FADI) with a confocal microscope to measure the rotational diffusion dynamics of cationic chromophore cresyl violet as a function of distance from the conductive oxide support, FTO (fluorine doped tin oxide) or ITO (indium doped tin oxide). Using this experimental configuration, control over the bias and current applied to the support can be achieved, allowing the reorientation dynamics of the charged chromophores to vary with the potential difference between and the current across the FTO or ITO support. The effects of water on the induced charge density gradient in the RTILs were also explored. Data from those measurements showed that when ca. 25,000 ppm or more of water is added to the RTIL, the induced charge density gradient persists but with apparently diminished amplitude.The results of this work have demonstrated a novel experimental method to study the local organization in RTILs. These findings represent an initial step for characterizing and modulating the long range order in RTILs, which will result in using this family of materials most effectively and providing a practical framework to better understand ionic liquids.
