Ute people, ranchers, settlers even hermits have occupied the cedar, pinion and oak brush-covered slopes. Old and new coal mines dot the mountain from Palisade to Price . The Ute people leaving Colorado at the time of the Meeker Massacre used most of the state for hunting. They also used the numerous hot springs in the mountains for medicinal purposes. Forced to go to the reservation in Utah they are now trying to bridge the gaps with pow-wows at Meeker and Montrose. Traveling to other reservations for the Bear Dance.

Despite the timeless themes of Olive Tilford Dargan's work and the acclaim she earned with her novels Call Home the Heart (1932) and A Stone Came Rolling (1935), the author, who published her best-known works under the pseudonym Fielding Burke, has been largely forgotten by the American literary establishment. In this first book-length study of Dargan's life and work, Kathy Cantley Ackerman poses these questions: Why did Dargan's proletarian and feminist writings fall out of public favor when the literary climate changed in the 1940s, and what are the issues raised in and by her work that today's readers should reconsider? The Heart of Revolution combines biography and history with a critical reading of Dargan's work. Ackerman pays close attention to the proletarian, feminist, and racial issues in the novels; she then examines the ways these issues intersect in the southern Appalachian and Piedmont regions. Dargan's aesthetic, articulated in her depiction of the southern textile mill strikes of 1929 and the early 1930s, defies the party line of the period that privileged the struggle of white working men over the concerns of women and minorities. Unlike her male--and many of her female--counterparts in the proletarian movement, Dargan envisions a world in which romantic love can coexist with the fight for socioeconomic revolution, a world in which the activist does not have to surrender her individuality. Through strong female characters, she reconstructs the paternalistic, capitalistic marriage-and-mother myth, replacing it with a model based on egalitarian principles--an ideology that has only gained relevance over time. Ackerman's exploration of class, race, and gender in Dargan's novels individually and her consideration of Dargan's work as a whole reveal the complicated reasons for the novelist's neglect and present a compelling argument for reevaluation of her fiction. A published poet, Kathy Cantley Ackerman is Writer-in-Residence at Isothermal Community College in Spindale, North Carolina. She lives in Charlotte.

These 2021 standards, appropriate for instructors and trainers in all settings, are based on well-established instructional principles that are flexible enough to allow for adjustments to new understandings in the science of teaching and learning, the integration of best practices, and adaptability to emerging tools and technology. With this update of IBSTPI’s 2004 Instructor Competencies, the framework now includes four domains of performance, 19 competencies, 150 performance statements and these three conditions defining instructors’ work: core, blended, and online.

Leadership, as a discipline, leadership education, as a field, and leadership educator, as a profession are still in their infancy and rapidly evolving. As professionals in higher education, we are constantly asked to provide opportunities for students to learn leadership, whether that is inside or outside of the classroom. However, very little, if any professional development occurs in how to create such learning opportunities. This book provides resources for leadership educators in three sections. The first section sets the stage for leadership education and the professional work of leadership educators, culminating with a variety of professional development resources for leadership educators. The second section introduces a leadership learning framework, provides characteristics and examples of strong leadership programs and assessment practices, and describes the transformative practice of leadership education. The third and final section offers specific instructional and assessment strategies ranging from discussion, case study, and reflection, to team-based- and service-learning to self-assessments, role-play, simulation, and games, to fulfill learning outcomes.

Born of African rhythms, the spiritual "call and response," and other American musical traditions, jazz was by the 1920s the dominant influence on this country's popular music. Writers of the Harlem Renaissance (Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, Zora Neale Hurston) and the "Lost Generation" (Malcolm Cowley, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein), along with many other Americans celebrated it--both as an expression of black culture and as a symbol of rebellion against American society. But an equal number railed against it. Whites were shocked by its raw emotion and sexuality, and blacks considered it "devil's music" and criticized it for casting a negative light on the black community. In this illuminating work, Kathy Ogren places this controversy in the social and cultural context of 1920s America and sheds new light on jazz's impact on the nation as she traces its dissemination from the honky-tonks of New Orleans, New York, and Chicago, to the clubs and cabarets of such places as Kansas City and Los Angeles, and further to the airwaves. Ogren argues that certain characteristics of jazz, notably the participatory nature of the music, its unusual rhythms and emphasis, gave it a special resonance for a society undergoing rapid change. Those who resisted the changes criticized the new music; those who accepted them embraced jazz. In the words of conductor Leopold Stowkowski, "Jazz [had] come to stay because it [was] an expression of the times, of the breathless, energetic, superactive times in which we [were] living, it [was] useless to fight against it." Numerous other factors contributed to the growth of jazz as a popular music during the 1920s. The closing of the Storyville section of New Orleans in 1917 was a signal to many jazz greats to move north and west in search of new homes for their music. Ogren follows them to such places as Chicago, New York, and San Francisco, and, using the musicians' own words as often as possible, tells of their experiences in the clubs and cabarets. Prohibition, ushered in by the Volstead Act of 1919, sent people out in droves to gang-controlled speak-easies, many of which provided jazz entertainment. And the 1920s economic boom, which made music readily available through radio and the phonograph record, created an even larger audience for the new music. But Ogren maintains that jazz itself, through its syncopated beat, improvisation, and blue tonalities, spoke to millions. Based on print media, secondary sources, biographies and autobiographies, and making extensive use of oral histories, The Jazz Revolution offers provocative insights into both early jazz and American culture.
