A special section is dedicated to the nation's booming yachting industry, with details on marinas, facilities and services. I wish I'd had this book the first time I visited Trinidad and Tobago. The book fully describes the culture of these island people and this knowledge would make a trip to these wonderful islands even more enjoyable. I also believe it's a good choice for readers who can't make the trip but still want to taste the culture. -- Amazon customerI've been to TNT once for two weeks and am returning again in a few months. It's a great read, and as the back cover suggests, it really is written for the traveler who wants to experience more than just sunbathing. However, once you've been to Trindad and Tobago, you discover that they are not your generic Caribbean islands. Visiting Trindad and Tobago is more of a cultural vacation than an island getaway. Once you step foot off the plane at Piarco airport, you'll never want to leave, or you'll want to go back once every year. The two islands are full of charisma, and O'Donnell and Pefkaros do a good job of capturing this spirit in the book. You really cannot be intimidated by the cultures of TNT. In The Chicken Trail, Kathleen C. Schwartzman examines the impact of globalization-and of NAFTA in particular-on the North American poultry industry, focusing on the displacement of African American workers in the southeast United States and workers in Mexico. Schwartzman documents how the transformation of U.S. poultry production in the 1980s increased its export capacity and changed the nature and consequences of labor conflict. She documents how globalization-and NAFTA in particular-forced Mexico to open its commodity and capital markets, and eliminate state support of corporations and rural smallholders. As a consequence, many Mexicans were forced to abandon their no longer sustainable small farms, with some seeking work in industrialized poultry factories north of the border. By following this chicken trail, Schwartzman breaks through the deadlocked immigration debate, highlighting the broader economic and political contexts of immigration flows. The narrative that undocumented worker take jobs that Americans don't want to do is too simplistic. Schwartzman argues instead that illegal immigration is better understood as a labor story in which the hiring of undocumented workers is part of a management response to the crises of profit making and labor-management conflict. By placing the poultry industry at the center of a constellation of competing individual, corporate, and national interests and such factors as national debt, free trade, economic development, industrial restructuring, and African American unemployment, The Chicken Trail makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the implications of globalization for labor and how the externalities of free trade and neoliberalism become the social problems of nations and the tragedies of individuals.

What has been missing from the debate is an understanding of how we have got to where we are. This timely new study, by three leading experts in the field, sets out first to investigate the demographics of lone motherhood - how the pathways into lone motherhood have changed, and whether the changes of the last quarter of a century are as dramatic as they appear. Second, it looks at the wider context for the changes in lone motherhood in terms of ideas about marriage, and the changes in the construction of the never-married mother, from victim in the 1950s to parasite in the late 1980s. Finally, it examines the way in which policies have defined the problem of lone motherhood over time and the way in which lone mothers have been treated with regard to housing, social security, and employment. The study concludes that there is little possiblility of putting the genie back in the bottle in terms of reducing the number of lone mothers - efforts to do so by reducing public expenditure on them may be effective, but at the expense of the children involved. Instead, the authors urge policy-makers to change focus again, and pay more attention to investing in children.
