Kathleen Hann was born into a poor working-class family in the Black Country during the depression of the nineteen thirties. She was a clever child at a time when it wasn't thought poor children could be clever, when ridicule was the only way the mediocre teachers knew how to deal with the situation. This is a book to make you laugh and cry as the author revisits her past and evokes many of the outrageous and picaresque charcters of her childhood, her youth and early womanhood. She was one of a hundred people in Shropshire chosen by the BBC to appear on the programme, The Century Speaks, in which the BBC called for people to give their views on Shropshire. This book is living history, experienced in the raw and tested on the pulses of a real participant whose vision of those times, while sympathetic, sincere and humorous, is never coloured by rose-tinted lenses. She has not given us a dry treatise of social history, but a slice of life that will forever remain with the reader.

Life in an Indigenous town during an understudied era of Haitian history This book details the Indigenous Taíno occupation at En Bas Saline in Hispaniola between AD 1250 and 1520, showing how the community coped with the dramatic changes imposed by Spanish contact. En Bas Saline is the largest late precontact Taíno town recorded in what is now Haiti; the only one that has been extensively excavated and analyzed; and one of few with archaeologically documented occupation both before and after the arrival of Columbus in 1492. It is thought to be the site of La Navidad, Columbus’s first settlement, where the cacique Guacanagarí offered refuge and shelter after the sinking of the Santa María. Kathleen Deagan provides an intrasite and spatial analysis of En Bas Saline by focusing on households, foodways, ceramics, and crafts and offers insights into social organization and chiefly power in this political center through domestic and ornamental material culture. Postcontact changes are seen in patterns of gendered behavior, as well as in the power base of the caciques, challenging the traditional assumption that Taíno society was devastatingly disrupted almost immediately after contact. En Bas Saline is the only archaeological account of the consequences of contact from the perspective of the Taíno peoples’ lived experience. The second part of Kathleen Hann's autobiography, Still Telling It As It Was, sees us through her early married life in the Black Country from 1951 to her move to Telford in 1969. With her husband Peter, just demobbed, they face financial hardship due to low wages and high housing costs. Bringing up three children at the time, Kathleen shows her love, care, mettle and great skills with "make do and mend" which have been passed on by her mother. Unwittingly renting a room to a prostitute and her pimp, buying a war bombed house, and getting a failing public house back on its feet are just a few of the trials and tribulations which Kathleen and Peter face in this story. Tales of terribly hard physical labour for both of them, which left permanent physical and mental scars, are retold with chilling accuracy. The progress of her son's major illness is also described with great passion and dignity, especially considering the way she was treated by the some of the medical profession at the time. There are lighter notes though – the DIY chimney sweeping saga, the Golden Child who stuffed her knickers down the drains, and Kathleen's own very short fuse to an exploding temper – these all bring very different and sometimes highly amusing insights into this very closely knit and loving family. A vital document for any social historian, or a grippingly real story of hardship in the Black Country of the 1950s and 60s, this book is a prime candidate for anyone's must read list.

A sweeping history of Islamism in Central Asia from the Russian Revolution to the present through Soviet-era archival documents, oral histories, and a trove of interviews and focus groups. Few observers anticipated a surge of Islamism in Central Asia, after seventy years of forced communist atheism. Muslims do not inevitably support Islamism, a modern political ideology of Islam. Yet, Islamism became the dominant form of political opposition in post-Soviet Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. In Politicizing Islam in Central Asia, Kathleen Collins explores the causes, dynamics, and variation in Islamist movements-first within the USSR, and then in the post-Soviet states of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Drawing upon extensive ethnographic and historical research on Islamist mobilization, she explains the strategies and relative success of each Central Asian Islamist movement. Collins argues that in each case, state repression of Islam, by Soviet and post-Soviet regimes, together with the diffusion of religious ideologies, motivated Islamist mobilization. Kathleen Brown examines the origins of racism and slavery in British North America from the perspective of gender. Both a basic social relationship and a model for other social hierarchies, gender helped determine the construction of racial categories and the institution of slavery in Virginia. But the rise of racial slavery also transformed gender relations, including ideals of masculinity. In response to the presence of Indians, the shortage of labor, and the insecurity of social rank, Virginia's colonial government tried to reinforce its authority by regulating the labor and sexuality of English servants and by making legal distinctions between English and African women. This practice, along with making slavery hereditary through the mother, contributed to the cultural shift whereby women of African descent assumed from lower-class English women both the burden of fieldwork and the stigma of moral corruption. Brown's analysis extends through Bacon's Rebellion in 1676, an important juncture in consolidating the colony's white male public culture, and into the eighteenth century. She demonstrates that, despite elite planters' dominance, wives, children, free people of color, and enslaved men and women continued to influence the meaning of race and class in colonial Virginia.
