My white friends who have read this book say it is about racism in Kansas in the 1950s. My black friends say it is the coming-of-age story of two young girls - one black, one white. Silent Heroes is both of these things and more, as two best-friends discover a truth that neither of them really wants to know.
The difference between fiction and real life is that fiction has to make sense; real life doesn't. So I'll leave it to you to decide whether these stories are true, or whether I just made them up.
