Approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1989, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child affirms that children in all countries have fundamental rights, including rights to education. To date, 192 states are signatories to or have in some form ratified the accord. Children are still imperilled in many countries, however, and are often not made aware of their guaranteed rights. In Empowering Children, R. Brian Howe and Katherine Covell assert that educating children about their basic rights is a necessary means not only of fulfilling a country's legal obligations, but also of advancing education about democratic principles and the practice of citizenship. The authors contend that children's rights education empowers children as persons and as rights-respecting citizens in democratic societies. Such education has a 'contagion effect' that brings about a general social knowledge on human rights and social responsibility. Although there remain obstacles to the implementation of children's rights in many countries, Howe and Covell argue that reforming schools and enhancing teacher education are absolutely essential to the creation of a new culture of respect toward children as citizens. Their thorough and passionate work marks a significant advance in the field.

Territorialisierung als Prozess in Salem vom Spten Mittelalter bis zum Dreiigjhrigen Krieg Die Studie ber die reichsunmittelbare Zisterzienserabtei Salem erffnet neue Einsichten ber grundlegende politische Entwicklungen in der Frhen Neuzeit. Sie beleuchtet die Mglichkeiten und die Grenzen kirchlicher Herrschaft und weist auf breiter Quellengrundlage den dauerhaften politischen Einfluss der Bauernschaft nach. In der untersuchten Periode von 1473 bis 1637 festigte die Abtei ihre politische Herrschaft ber Land und Leute. Im Zuge der Territorialisierung verdichtete sie verschiedene Herrschaftsrechte in ihrer Hand und schloss das Herrschaftsgebiet ab. Dies wurde auf zwei Ebenen erreicht: Erstens wurden die Grenzen des Territoriums gegen Auen eindeutig definiert - in rumlich-physischer, rechtlicher und symbolischer Hinsicht. Zweitens wurden die Untertanen vollstndig in das eigene Territorium integriert. Diesen Prozess kann man jedoch nicht einfach als Staatsbildung von "oben" - durch die Aktivitten der bte - charakterisieren. Deren Herrschaft wurde zwar gestrkt und zentralisiert, aber durchaus nicht vornehmlich auf Kosten der Bauernschaft. Deren materielle Bedrfnisse und Interessen wurden aufgegriffen, so dass gtliche Vergleiche zustande kamen. Das Beispiel Salem zeigt das Moment politischer Inklusion auf einer breiten sozialen Basis. Durch kleinteiliges Agieren und auf dem Wege direkter Kommunikation brachten sich die kommunalen Entscheidungstrger aus der Bauernschaft wirkungsvoll ein. So entwickelte sich die Herrschaft in der Abtei aufgrund interaktiver Prozesse fort. Wir begegnen also in der Arbeit vielseitigen Aushandlungsprozessen, bei denen sowohl wechselnde Bndnisse und ungleiche Partnerschaften als auch das Prinzip der Gegenseitigkeit sowie direkte Kooperation zwischen sozialen Gruppen mitwirkten. Dieses Primat des Verhandlungsprinzips brachte wechselseitige Vorteile, nicht weil die sozialen Gruppen von vornherein gemeinsame Interessen hatten, sondern da sich Kommunikationskanle ffneten und Konflikte abschwchten. Die Kommunikation im Territorium lief ber zwei zentrale Institutionen, das "Sidelgericht," und das "Verhr." Diese beiden Krperschaften vermochten es, nicht nur Konflikte zu dmpfen und diverse soziale Gruppen zu integrieren, sondern auch deren Anliegen zu bercksichtigen, und hier lag das Fundament der bemerkenswerten politischen und sozialen Stabilitt in Salem. So ist dieses kleine Territorium ein Beispiel dafr, wie ein erfolgreiches Gemeinwesen vorgeht, wie es stndig neue Ziele entwickelt und sich dabei selbst erhlt. Durch diese Forschungsarbeit ber Salem werden die Potenziale und Grenzen der Staatsbildung im Reich grundlegend beleuchtet, sie zeigt auf, wie die Beziehungen zwischen Herren und Untertanen in der Frhen Neuzeit miteinander verflochten waren.

In Book 3 of the Chronicles of Issraya, Tilda and the other mages of Ring Isle have a problem that could threaten their very existence. For the first time in their history, the powermages have in their possession silviron that's been tainted with dark power, perilous to keep on Ring Isle or to exist anywhere in the world where someone could encounter it. The mages decide to put the tainted silviron in a small metal box and drop it into the turbulent waters of the Merjan Straits, which lie at the point where the inner and outer seas meet. Since Tilda was the one to find the silviron that restored their power, she's selected to dispose of the tainted silviron. Since Kamen, the aging Mage of Kradlock, has to cross the Merjan Straits to return home, Tilda accompanies him to fulfil her task and to help Kamen decide his successor. Tilda soon discovers there's more to Kradlock than the famous Hanging Rock, colourful clothing, and cliffs full of cavern homes and markets. Kradlock's greatest pride are the honeycomb of tunnels full of the bones of ancestors, including the mortal remains of Kradlock's powermages that not only test her growing abilities but her right to be called the Mage of Merjan.
