Prince George's County, one of Maryland's most populous counties, has a rich and vibrant history. From agriculture to industry, school life to religious life, trolleys, trains, and tobacco, the people of this area share a distinctive regional heritage and a great pride in the communities they have built. With numerous recognized historic sites, Prince George's County boasts, among others, Mount Calvert, the only structure remaining at the site of the first county seat; Melwood Park and the Magruder House, both visited by George Washington; and His Lordship's Kindness, a five-part Georgian mansion. Other historic buildings were not elegant manors, but functional public facilities. The College Park Airport holds the record as the oldest continuously operating airport in the world, and the Surratt House played a role in the assassination plot of Abraham Lincoln. But the everyday lives of citizens are represented here as well, in the images of early residents, their homes and businesses, of the city services and social events, of elementary school classes and congregations. College Park, Maryland, owes its name and much of its history to the Maryland Agricultural College, which was founded in 1856 under the Morrill Act and built on land donated by the Calvert family. The original goal of the college was to provide a scientific education to the sons of Maryland farmers, but the college grew far beyond those early dreams to become the flagship campus of the University of Maryland. The rich history of College Park also reflects its strong transportation heritage related to roads, railroads, streetcars, and air travel. College Parks development was fueled by its proximity to Route 1, the nations first highway, and the B&O Railroad, a few blocks to the east. With the advent of the trolley line, College Park became a streetcar suburb, as people commuted to and from Washington, D.C. The College Park Airport is the worlds oldest continuously operating airport and the site of many aviation firsts, including early flight experiments and instructions led by Wilbur Wright.
When Katharine Greider was told to leave her house or risk it falling down on top of her and her family, it spurred an investigation that began with contractors' diagnoses and lawsuits, then veered into archaeology and urban history, before settling into the saltwater grasses of the marsh that fatefully once sat beneath the site of Number 239 East 7th Street. During the journey, Greider examines how people balance the need for permanence with the urge to migrate, and how the home is the resting place for ancestral ghosts. The land on which Number 239 was built has a history as long as America's own. It provisioned the earliest European settlers who needed fodder for their cattle; it became a spoil of war handed from the king's servant to the revolutionary victor; it was at the heart of nineteenth-century Kleinedeutschland and of the revolutionary Jewish Lower East Side. America's immigrant waves have all passed through 7th Street. In one small house is written the history of a young country and the much longer story of humankind and the places they came to call home.
