Previous editions are cited in Books for College Libraries, 3d ed.Barth (d. 1968, formerly dogmatic theology, U. of Basel, Switzerland) saw this monumental work as incomplete. Yet it offers a substantial treatment of the history of theology and philosophy in German-speaking countries in the 18th and 19th centuries. The first half of the book is devoted to "background" with major sections on Rousseau, Lessing, Kant, Herder, Novalis, and Hegel.
