China faces many modernization challenges, but perhaps none is more pressing than that posed by climate change. China must find a new economic growth model that is simultaneously environmentally sustainable, can free it from its dependency on fossil fuels, and lift living standards for the majority of its population. But what does such a model look like? And how can China best make the transition from its present macro-economic structure to a low-carbon future? This ground-breaking economic study, led by the Stockholm Environment Institute and the Chinese Economists 50 Forum, brings together leading international thinkers in economics, climate change, and development, to tackle some of the most challenging issues relating to China's low-carbon development. This study maps out a deep carbon reduction scenario and analyzes economic policies that shift carbon use, and shows how China can take strong and decisive action to make deep reductions in carbon emission over the next forty years while maintaining high economic growth and minimizing adverse effects of a low-carbon transition. Moreover, these reductions can be achieved within the finite global carbon budget for greenhouse gas emissions, as determined by the hard constraints of climate science. 1.1 Preface Organic chemistry had its origin in chemicals which are synthesized by living cells. These chemicals consist of molecules whose skeletons are built up of carbon atoms. The remaining valences are connected with ligands such as hydrogen, halo gens, -OH,==O, -NH . Some of the skeletal carbon atoms can be replaced by non 2 metals such as oxygen, nitrogen, or sulfur {"heteroatoms"}. It is characteristic for the living world, not to be in a crystalline state. However it is possible to obtain single crystals from many organic compounds both of natural and synthetic origin. For a number of years the physics and chem istry of these crystals have stimulated fundamental research on a rapidly growing scale. The great variety of possible organic structures {as compared to inorganics} opens up a large field of new materials and of novel material properties; for previous literature reviews and data compilations see 1-40) and Chap. 6. The art of producing good and pure organic single crystals has developed hand in-hand with the ever growing requirements of basic research, arising from its interest in fundamental interactions in the solid state. Interactions manifest themselves in a very detailed way by energy transfer.
The Paradox Basin is a geologic area in southeastern Utah defined by the location of Pennsylvanian salt deposits. The Basin is bounded by the Uncompahgre Uplift to the east and north, the San Rafael Swell, the Circle Cliffs Uplift and the Monument Upwarp to the west, and the Defiance-Zuni Uplift and the Four Corners Platform to the south. The basin is divided into two principal tectonic subprovinces - the Paradox Fold and Fault belt to the north and the Blanding Basin to the south. The Fold and Fault Belt is an area of dominantly northwest-trending salt-cored anticlinal structures. These structures are rooted in the Precambrian basement and have influenced the stratigraphy (deposition) and structure (tectonics) of the Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, and younger formations deposited across them. The Blanding Basin was also a structural low during Pennsylvanian time. It is primarily an area of carbonate-organic mound (bioherm and bioclastic mound) deposition, which forms the most common type of reservoir for petroleum found in the region. This study includes an individual oil and gas field report and a presentation of the regional structure. Sixty-three individual petroleum fields were identified in the Utah portion of the Paradox Basin, and each are represented by data outlining the nature of the petroleum reservoir, along with its geology, structure, and location. The majority of the fields are located in the Blanding Basin subprovince. The regional structure is represented by a structure map of the Ismay zone of the Paradox Formation (Plate 1), elevation at which first salt is encountered in the Paradox Formation (Plate 2), and an isopach map of the salt bed interval in the Paradox Formation (Plate 3). The Ismay Member was chosen to be a representative oil horizon of the Paradox Basin and illustrates the predominant tectonic structures as well as the subtle petroleum related structures. The isopach map of the salt bed interval determines the evaporite boundary in the Basin and illustrates the fold and fault subprovince and corresponding structures. 162 pages + 4 plates

This volume describes preparation and properties of the enormous number of molybdenum oxide sulfide ions. The monomeric anions display an impressive range of colors - yellow to a deep reddish orange - which in 1826 fascinated Berzelius. Nowadays, however, the stimulus for research and development springs from bioinorganic chemistry. Numerous molybdenum chalcogenide halides are known: the most investigated have been those containing Mo6 clusters. In addition, the volume contains the binary molybdenum selenides; of these, the most important is the heavily studied MoSe2. Among the molybdenum dichalcogenides, MoSe2 shows the most promising photoelectrochemical properties, making it attractive for use in electrochemical solar cells. All binary molybdenum selenides reversibly intercalate a variety of metals - of importance for use in rechargeable batteries.

The present volume "Manganese D 7" continues the description of the coordination compounds. Complexes with nitriles, with nitro-hydrocarbons, and with ligands containing sulfur, selenium or tellurium are described. Many of the coordination compounds containing sulfur are of analytical or biological interest. A formula index lists the ligands and the empirical formulas.
