During the past two decades, evaluation has come to play an increasingly important role in the operation of educational and social programs by national, state, and local agencies. Mandates by federal funding agencies that programs they sponsored be evaluated gave impetus to use of evaluation. Realization that evaluation plays a pivotal role in assuring program quality and effectiveness has maintained the use of evaluation even where mandates have been relaxed. With increased use --indeed institutionalization --of evaluation in many community, state, and national agencies, evaluation has matured as a profession, and new evaluation approaches have been developed to aid in program planning, implementation, monitoring, and improvement. Much has been written about various philosophical and theoretical orientations to evaluation, its relationship to program management, appropriate roles evaluation might play, new and sometimes esoteric evaluation methods, and particular evaluation techniques. Useful as these writings are, relatively little has been written about simple but enormously important activities which comprise much of the day-to-day work of the program evaluator. This book is focused on some of these more practical aspects that largely determine the extent to which evaluation will prove helpful.

Karl Maramorosch may be best known for his accomplishments as a top scientist, but the story of how he became such a success has never been tolduntil now. Born in Vienna in 1915, his family moved to Poland, and he fled with his wife, Irene, to Romania in September 1939. They spent four years in Polish refugee camps and were in Soviet-occupied Romania until October 1946, before coming to the United States in January 1947 on an immigration visa. But they did not arrive unscathed: Maramoroschs father died in the gas chamber in Belzec in 1942, and his mother also died at the camp. His brother died in the Kolomyya jail on Yom Kippur in 1942. His wifes closest relatives died in Treblinka in 1942. The inseparable couple refused to let any of that stop them from forging ahead: He began a scientific career that spanned more than sixty years, and she became a librarian at the New York Public Library, where she worked thirty years. Maramorosch recalls the painful losses of the past and the brutalities of war, but he also celebrates his love for his wife and life in The Thorny Road to Success.

The volume covers the interactions and compounds of gold with noble gases, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, fluorine, and chlorine. Along with the expanding use of gold in recent years, for example in electronics and in aerospace equipment, there has been an impressive series of advances in the chemistry of gold compounds and of discoveries of unusual oxidation states. Hydrogen forms a nonstoichiometric solid phase, AuHn at high pressures with a maximum value of n=0.43. Hydrides such as AuH exist only in the gaseous state. The predominant oxide is that of gold(III), Au2O3. The lower-valent oxides Au2O and AuO form during anodic oxidation of gold. There still is no evidence for definite gold(I) and gold(II) fluorides, whereas AuF3 is stable below 500oC, while it is immediately decomposed by water. The first pentavalent gold compound, (Xe2F11)AuF6, was synthesized in the early 1970's. Later, a number of new Auv compounds were prepared, among them AuF5. The highest oxidation state of gold ever realized is +7 in the recently synthesized AuF7. The major portion of this volume deals with gold chlorine-compounds. Solid AuCl has a polymeric structure with Au and Cl atoms forming zigzag chains, while the gaseous compound consists of dimeric Au2Cl2 molecules. AuCl2, which was first thought to be a compound of gold(II), actually is a mixed-valence gold(I)-gold(III) compound with the net formula Au4Cl8. The crystal structure of AuCl3 comprises discrete, planar Au2Cl6 molecules. The most important water-soluble gold compounds are the tetrachloroauric acid, HAuCl4, and its sodium and potassium salts, easy to obtain by dissolution of gold in aqua regia. They are used besides AuCl3 to prepare nearly all other gold compounds, mostly in solution via the tetrachloroaurate (III) ion ÄAuCl4Ü-.

Appearing for the first time in English, Karl Anton Nowotny’s Tlacuilolli is a classic work of Mesoamerican scholarship. A concise analysis of the pre-Columbian Borgia Group of manuscripts, it is the only synthetic interpretation of divinatory and ritual codices from Mexico. Originally published in German and unavailable to any but the most determined scholars, Tlacuilolli has nevertheless formed the foundation for subsequent scholarly works on the codices.
