Intercountry adoption represents a significant component of international migration; in recent years, up to 45,000 children have crossed borders annually as part of the intercountry adoption boom. Proponents have touted intercountry adoption as a natural intervention for promoting child welfare. However, in cases of fraud and economic incentives, intercountry adoption has been denounced as child trafficking. The debate on intercountry adoption has been framed in terms of three perspectives: proponents who advocate intercountry adoption, abolitionists who argue for its elimination, and pragmatists who look for ways to improve both the conditions in sending countries and the procedures for intercountry transfer of children. Social workers play critical roles in intercountry adoption; they are often involved in family support services or child relinquishment in sending countries, and in evaluating potential adoptive homes, processing applications, and providing support for adoptive families in receiving countries; social workers are involved as brokers and policy makers with regard to the processes, procedures, and regulations that govern intercountry adoption. Their voice is essential in shaping practical and ethical policies of the future. Containing 25 chapters covering the following five areas: policy and regulations; sending country perspectives; outcomes for intercountry adoptees; debate between a proponent and an abolitionist; and pragmatists' guides for improving intercountry adoption practices, this book will be essential reading for social work practitioners and academics involved with intercountry adoption.

The traditional production measure of moral judgment has been the Moral Judgment Interview (MJI), which uses hypothetical moral dilemmas to elicit moral judgment. However, the MJI dilemmas have been criticized as artificial and may not be entirely appropriate for children, certain cultures, and practical moral situations. This unique volume utilizes and evaluates a new production measure of moral judgment, the Sociomoral Reflection Measure -- Short Form (SRM-SF), which substitutes brief stimulus materials and evaluative questions for the moral dilemma technique. The authors report that the SRM-SF exhibits an impressive degree of reliability and validity and is quicker to administer and score than other available measures. To illustrate these findings, this book offers the resources needed for the assessment of the Kohlbergian stage of moral judgment using the SRM-SF. These resources include: an up-to-date review of research and theory, a group-administrable questionnaire, an efficient scoring manual, and self-training exercises in assessment. Psychometrically sound and practical, the SRM-SF has the potential to become the leading moral judgment measure of the 90s.

Intercountry adoption has undergone a radical decline since 2004 when it reached a peak of approximately 45,000 children adopted globally. Its practice had been linked to conflict, poverty, gender inequality, and claims of human trafficking, ultimately leading to the establishment of the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption (HCIA). This international private law along with the Convention on the Rights of the Child affirm the best interests of the child as paramount in making decisions on behalf of children and families with obligations specifically oriented to safeguards in adoption practices. In 2004, as intercountry adoption peaked and then began a dramatic decline, commercial global surrogacy contracts began to take off in India. Global surrogacy gained in popularity owing, in part, to improved assisted reproductive technology methods, the ease with which people can make global surrogacy arrangements, and same-sex couples seeking the option to have their own genetically-related children. Yet regulation remains an issue, so much so that the Hague Conference on Private International Law has undertaken research and assessed the many dilemmas as an expert group considers drafting a new law, with some similarities to the HCIA and a strong emphasis on parentage. This ground-breaking book presents a detailed history and applies policy and human rights issues with an emphasis on the best interests of the child within intercountry adoption and the new conceptions of protection necessary in global surrogacy. To meet this end, voices of surrogate mothers in the US and India ground discourse as authors consider the human rights concerns and policy implications. For both intercountry adoption and global surrogacy, the complexity of the social context anchors the discourse inclusive of the intersections of poverty and privilege. This examination of the inevitable problems is presented at a time in which the pathways to global surrogacy appear to be shifting as the Supreme Court of India weighs in on the future of the industry there while Thailand, Cambodia and other countries have banned the practice all together. There is speculation that countries in Africa and possibly Central America appear poised to pick up the multi-million dollar industry as the demand for healthy infants continues on.

Liam Jarvis and Karen Savage explore aspects of care in relation to technology, spectacle and facilitation, and how new modes of delivery and the repurposing of theatre spaces that were displaced amidst the mass migration online have been enabling as well as controversial. The variety of case studies assessed includes internet memes, online films, performances of everyday resilience through social media and participatory theatre productions, including Thaddeus Phillips' Zoom Motel, Coney's Telephone and Nightcap's Handle with Care.

Emotionally and sexually abused by religious leaders, God has anointed me in the area of my affliction to purely expose the devices of Satan and challenge the Body of Christ to raise the standard of holiness, purity, and integrity. As I am willing to become transparent in this three-part series (From Mistress to Ministry), my testimony capitalizes on scriptural references and information, in conjunction with past experiences, to present a biblical reformation that will promote genuine holiness in a wayward church. The principle of spiritual warfare is that we must be called to order, before we can advance to the next level of victory. My objective is three-fold: to nurture damaged spirits, to foster a healing process for victims of abuse, and to present the deliverance that repentance brings to those who are trapped in sexual sins. Pastors, can God count on you to avoid the damaging effects of committing spiritual incest? Husbands, can your wives trust you to shun the immoral acts of adultery/fornication? Fathers, can your daughters lean on you to steer clear of raping them of their innocence? Teachers, can our children expect you to be mentors, and not molesters? Executives, can your subordinates rely on you to refrain from sexual-harassment violations? Officials, can your citizens depend on you to protect us against economic hardship? President of the United States, can God trust you to call this nation back to Him and snatch us out of the hand of the enemy? More than mere members of an organization or a population, we are your sons and daughters. Powerful ambassadors of God, will you cover us in our imperfections and not continue to exploit our vulnerabilities? "For the time is come that judgment [deliverance through investigation or examination] must begin at the house of God"... When the Kingdom of God does not influence the nation through truth and righteousness, the leadership of the nation is not equipped to positively affect its citizens. However, the nation cannot be healed until the church has been cleansed. Thus, we can not afford to remain complacent to the issues of clergy misconduct and the abuse and misuse of spiritual power. Secret issues can only be eradicated by exposing old wounds; otherwise, hidden infection will inevitably spread throughout the Body. In presenting this 21st-century exposition of the consequences of making ungodly decisions, I minister based on where I am, after I have judged myself - based on where I was. "Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; but have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the Word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscious in the sight of God" (II Cor. 4:1-2).
